Okay dumbasses, let me explain something to you. It wasn't the raw fish they were smelling. It was the mix of allspice and sake/mirin/soy sauce that got blowtorched

Allspice is a sweet spice with flavors similar to cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. When it gets heated by direct flames it basically turns into fucking incense

The soy sauce, mirin and sake were also bruleed, evaporating the water and alcohol and carmelizing the sugars.

World class chefs are constantly being smitten by the sheer artistry and skill of teenagers? Seriously? It's emotionally exhausting to try and give a fuck after the first half of season one. There's no suspense to any duel because you know exactly how the judges are going to react both times. Then there's a very small window for some tension to be built up before the winner is decided. Rinse and repeat.

I really wanted to get into this manga but the novelty has worn off so quickly I am almost a little angry, and more than a little confused as to how this can be one of the most popular mangas currently.

Because Hayama is kind of a dick and boring character. He lack any endearing character quirk and most of the time treat other with obnoxious, irrational and injustified contempt.(Look how he treat Hisoko. Also when he won he quickly treat the other two as different class than him). His only redeeming trait, puppy devotion to Jun, is offset by the fact that she was rather boring and flat character no one really care. Also before the final match he seem awfully sure of his victory not because his skill but because his nose(the monologue about "as long as I have this nose"). Relying on special gimmick to win is a "villain" trait in this series (Meat etc.) so most expect to see him get beat down for his smug. His foil Kurokiba is much more likable compare to him (actual chemistry with Alice, who is also an interesting character, or respecting Megumi as an opponent). That's exactly why I don't mind that he won; sometimes its ok for the main character to lose, sometimes the guy who is that skilled is kind of a dick (ya know, like Erina was for the most part :V)

I don't mind Hayama as much as everyone else because I feel like he plays his role as a rival to Soma extremely well; look at how many people are wanting him to lose to Soma.

He's both a skilled opponent who can actually give Soma a challenge, and he's obnoxious enough to want to see him lose. That to me marks decent writing.

Is Hayama kind of annoying with how arrogant and smug he is with his skill? Yes, I can agree with that, but then if those traits were enough to garner that much hatred, everyone should hate virtually everyone but a handful of characters.

The eggs challenge was a great face-off because it showed Erina's skills and knowledge were better than Soma's without making Soma look inferior for it.
