So to build upon this a little- every game Monokuma runs has 'extra' or 'hidden' rules that he only brings up (or makes up) when they come into play. Like the two victims rule in the first game, or the three witness rule for body discovery.

So a hidden rule in this game seems pretty likely, and I'm pretty confident that the rule is 'If you kill the attacker you become the new attacker'. Basically, the only way for the game to end is for the attacker to be restrained without killing them.

Asahina being the attacker would make Munakata being alive pretty odd, but there may be some valid or compelling reason she doesn't go after him.

Generally speaking though, if she were doing it to protect her friends or felt that it was the right thing to do, she's certainly capable of it. More so than Mitarai or Naegi.

I finally realized why I hate dubs so much, and its not just because they have bad VA sometimes. The scene where Munakata kills Tengan and says. "You know nothing. Not about me, or my plan." is dubbed as "You know absolutely nothing you old fool. Not about me or what I have in store." The first one is short and to the point and chilling. The second one is just clunky and verbose. It only occurred to me that they have to dub like this to match the lip syncing which forces them to make awkward lines and delivery. Dubs are fucking awful.

Yeah 2's dub is great, I really enjoyed it. 1's ain't so bad either, Kyoko's english VA played quite a part in my attraction to her. Only ones I can think of are Byakuya's occasionally sounding off and pretty much Sakura entirely. But english Toko, Kyoko and Weedman for example? Perfectly ok.

While I'm on this, I was hoping english Munakata would be deadpan, oh well.

For starters Funimation were unable to get the dub actors for the games to reprise their roles. The entirety of DR1s cast was recast and they could only manage to get a few of the DR2 cast to reprise their roles.

Secondly, ALL funimation and the voice actors are going off from is what's shown in the anime itself. For the DR1 cast they have no reference of the game, or anything that actually develops those characters, and everything regarding the DR2 characters already assumes you've played the games. Leaving the VAs for those voicing characters that don't have a lot of development.

I can only imagine what the fuck it's like in the booth. "So what's despair? What the fuck made these days go insane and kill everyone in this apocalyptic event we never see? Ah fuck it, it's a paycheck."

I would not be at all surprised if today was Jabberwock. It's just the right time for it, as it maintains the suspense of finding out Naegi&Munakata's fates and learning if the bottle is actually relevant. It also leaves plenty of room for the big reveal and ensures that it gets further amplified by this week's Zetsubou-hen episode, which Ogata said would be a huge one.

If today's a jabberwock episode, that means we're going to get a very nice Izuru/Hajime scene in despair I feel.

The thing is that it usually have been far less extreme brainwashing. You refer to the memory manipulation of the games right ? That's much less convenient brainwashing than "I flipped your despair switch by making you watch Umaru".The memory erasing wasn't a finality in itself.
Problem with DR3 is imo that they tried setting up Despair to matter to Future, not by just explaining Munakata and all backstory,procuring forshadowing and all, but by hammering new characters Mitarai and chisa as the focus.
Imo I didn't see it coming. I expected a strong half horror anime in Future, with terrible death and dread at the beginning but a cheerful resolution at the end, and a Despair anime full of happiness on the begining slowly descending into madness as class 77 suffer from the tragedy as much as the other and snaps, descending into darkness.

Instead we got this mess of characterization and "whoops we got only 3 episode left...uh class 77 got brainwashed".

This. I also think Future has missed the mark too, it's really just been constant set up with very little actually happening, and last episode is was basically "shit, we have too many characters for the finale, and we need to kill off an important character to make this actually matter long term, better get killing!" and you just have this slew of deaths randomly when previous episodes were often slow and uneventful.

Both arcs feel poorly planned, like Kodaka has been writing it episode by episode with a vague idea of where he wants to be at certain parts instead of coming up with a story and trying to find a way to split it into 12 parts.

Which is a shame, because I liked the intent. Making DR a cross media. The episodic and animated format is great as well. You don't play as one character, so you can focus on several ones in a much less personal fashion, while relying on Naegi's past experience to feel attached to the DR1 cast.
You can aswell put a sense of urgency through the direction that you can't really do in a VN.
And I don't why he didn't play into this. For now, bar the shitty cliffhangers that are fun but pointless, he did few things that couldn't be done in a multi protag VN.
I guess there are some camera angles that are interesting and could mean something but i'll wait until the end for that.

To be fair, DR3's been utter shit in that regard. Given the slow advancement of the plot and the uninteresting, trite nature of the Mirai-hen killing game, the characters, even in spite of the shit characterization, were carrying the show heavily up until that point.

Kirigirifag or not (which I'm not since I'm a Chiakifag), her death having this much of an impact on the sales could be seen coming from a mile away.
