For what I put in NAC but probably won't matter much here about EGAO as a whole:
To me, it's more of the problem that it comes off as something that's already been established but not done well in both Synchro and in XYZ which unfortunately gives the things that are happening in Fusion a very bad taste.

I don't mind it EGAO being used from time-to-time but in the very beginning of the story honestly was not about it. We've seen it as ideals, what was seen as right or wrong, choices that are made including white/black and gray areas within those choices. When in Standard it gave a story for what Yuya wanted to be in life and that was like his father(which even he stated it was always best being himself) and when the tournament came in we've seen him try to work out that style which gave the impression of not being honest with himself as well as masking his true emotions within those smiles. In his first duel with Jack he is easily called out on it and during the duel with Kaito it gave the impression that he was trying to force his ideals upon Kaito(who has suffered a lot more that simple smiles would not work).

Now the execution for Yuya's efforts comes off as him being a Messiah which ruins his character a bit too much(ironically back in 5D's post 64 Yusei was named Cardgame!Jesus with how much people cling unto him). One random kid himself who has emotional issues of his own stops a bunch of people who robbed others of their friends, families and random civilians(including a baby) for the hell out of it were easily reformed with one-two simple duels something that remaining survivors fighting for their lives yet that wasn't good enough. There were also very less choices from the individuals themselves, too much forgiveness and what may/may not be truly best but that might be brought up later on. Overall, there are no right or wrong answers and there shouldn't be because any action that is taken rather good/bad will have consequences.

Next episode: Asuka fucking dies, forcing us all to ask why the hell she was even in this anime

Episode after that: Yuya and Yuto vs Selena and Ruri because the writers forgot Shun already saved Ruri

So many things i dont know where to begin.
The villains are mishandled. We are told from very early on that Academia is a very serious threat but other than the nameless fodder defeating other nameless fodder or minor characters they do nothing else. We are always told they are a credible threat but by the viewers view point they do nothing to become credible. Yuri is also hyped up to this but he does nothing as well.
It's as if the director is desperately telling us that "Academia is serious business" but shows nothing for it. Instead of having some major villains face the main characters frequently and building up their "evilness" and competence resulting in development for both sides, the writer/director heads in the opposite direction and when they realize their screw up you end up trying to fix thing quickly ending up with BB.

Then the plot. Standard's climax's build up was completely halted and we went on to a huge sidetrack with the same length as the standard arc. Synchro was full of mistakes with the most obvious being the pacing. Thrust in yet another tournament the characters are separated by very "convenient" means with character interactions slowed to a standstill. A slew of references to 5Ds just for the heck of it and a conflict with, so far, no connection to the main plot.
When things pick up the pace and the main plot appears we are cock blocked hard and settle for the climax of the synchro arc.
In this arc some characters got some major development, other some minor development but most of the characters just exist. This is the problem with character development.
Most of the main characters just exist. Other characters have had their character arc but still hold a large amount of screentime, e.g. Shun

and then the show keeps introducing new characters without the proper build up or development for them or the old characters.

All of these problems are present in the Xyz arc as well but made even worse.
Yuya turning into EGAO Jesus is blaring bad following the admittedly good arc he had in Synchro.
Let's cut it short. New characters show up. No significant build up, no significant development.
Old characters get shafted again.
New villains, no buildup, competence similar to an off handed comment and cheap resolution.

Now on to Fusion. The plot will pick up from now right? Not as much as you would think.
The show continues with the mistakes of the previous 2 arcs while trying to fix them but the fixes end up shoddy.
It has some good moments but compared to what happened it's just not enough. Just build ups with no payoff resulting in viewer fatigue.

I find it kind of funny how Yuya talks to BB and he mentions how he used to hide from his negative emotions by wearing his goggles, yet we never saw him even struggle with that past the Miami Championship. It's like the writers forgot that was one his character flaws to develop and made him a complete crybaby until he focused on nothing but EGAO.

Everyone loves to talk about how Arc-V has no fillers and no episodes are skippable because of muh "continuous plot" but the truth is the show would be much better off with distinct story arcs that link to an overarching story like DM or ZEXAL. It's much harder to do a continuous plot because there are so many more things to keep track of and it's harder to stay organized. It's clear there was no proper planning for this show and even when they had to extend it a year they didn't care to incorporate that smoothly into their pre-existing plans.
