People who take languages in college, don't learn those languages. It just doesn't work. Did you take a langauge in high school? Do you know it? I didn't think so.

Good post.

I feel like that if anything, that class you'll be attending will just build some bad habits regarding Japanese. To learn Japanese you need a lot of discipline, and unless you're in a specialized school like ones you can find in Japan with extreme exposure for multiple hours every day, you'll just end up wasting time.

Same could be said about art : have you ever learned anything in art classes? I don't think so, because here again if you wish to learn art through school only expensive private schools will ever manage to teach you anything - even art colleges are all shit and infested with feminists.

Learn from /djt/, whether the bad shits or the good shits, to ultimately learn from yourself and build your own understanding of the language. A few years ago I was a pleb at all of this but I owe a lot thanks to this place now.

I'm ranting too much but whatever.

I took classes from native Japanese speakers at a club for Japanese immigrants using books made in Japan to teach the language to foreigners. And while I wouldn't say that I took nothing from it, I wouldn't say I took a lot either. Frankly, it feels like I just wasted my time. If I had known about this back then, I would probably be fluid by now.

Classes are probably fine if they're intensive courses. As in at least a couple hours a day and daily homework. But I doubt a university course will be intensive. Hell, I also took obligatory French in my university and I sure as fuck can't speak French even though I passed all the courses. Learning a language is all about practice. The classes kind of don't really make a difference.

>>147041442
>Isn't it more likely to learn bad habits by doing it on your own?
Not if you genuinely want to learn and learn to carry an open-minded mindset about what you're doing. Simply having this thread bookmarked and open every day for a while and seeing how everyone does should give you some good examples. The guide is there for a reason, too.

Japanese classes at uni don't necessarily plan for the long term either, they often focus on conversational speeches and "what if you visit Japan soon" situations, which in my opinion are useless to focus on at first since the main goal is learning how to tackle the language as a whole and learn how to read it.

You can learn what uni classes teach you just by watching anime, honestly.

C'mon now, not everyone from /v/ is a retarded shitposter.

Speaking of /v/idya, has anyone here tried reading "Little Charo"? It's a Nintendo DS game made to teach Japanese people English, but works quite well in the opposite direction too. You're able to change between English and Japanese with 1 button press. It's also written for beginner learners so it's not terribly hard. Someone has ripped the script out in HTML format already: http://www.nihongonobaka.com/little-charo-the-best-video-game-for-japanese-learners/

The actual story is about a puppy "Charo" that gets separated from his owner in an airport and then the puppy goes on his own little adventure. It's pretty cute, might be good if you're not that interested in the moege / SoL manga that are usually recommended for beginners to start reading with.

I've just started on it, but it seems pretty useful for the (admittedly low) level that I'm at right now.
>>
>>147044214
I have that game downloaded but I'm a bit wary because of the NDS's low resolution. What level are you at?
>>
Taking classes is the best way to learn Japanese. I am not trolling. After 4 years of college courses you will be N2, that's way better than the majority of /djt/ posters (reminder that it's considered normal here to study for 7 years and still have difficulty reading Yotsubato). There's a reason that an enormous community of academics with PhDs have decided that college Japanese courses are best structured the way they are.
>>
>>147044338
I know this is le epic bait, but I just want to point out that there are people who learned Japanese from here and passed N1.

If you use the scripts (linked above) while playing, the resolution shouldn't be too much trouble.

My level? Hmm. I've gone through most of Tae Kim, and am ~1400 words into core 6k, though I have mined a bunch of stuff outside of that as well.

>>147044427
It's written in a careful way so it's easy to understand for beginner learners. The lack of furigana isn't a big deal if you can rikaichan hover the script as well.

Maybe I take the kanji total for granted, it seems pretty low to me, but I have the benefit of having gone through RTK so it's not a big deal in my case...
>>
>>147044214
Does it work on a western DS? Or does it only work on a JP DS? I'll have to try. I remember reading about that game and being interested about it. I'll report back in a few hours.

Yeah I know I could use DeSmune but playing in my bed is much comfier.

>>
I don't know if this question fits in this topic but I'll make it.
I've been living in Japan for about 6 months now.
When going into stores its usual to recieving a "thanks" after buying something. In my country culture (as well for all the west-culture i think) we usually reply. I replied once with "こちらこそ" even though the japanese clients usually ignore and avoid eye contact with the
clerk. When I replied the balconlady laughed at me so I can only think that this is an odd way to reply.

For me it's really hard to don't reply and it comes almost automatically when some says ありがとう. Is there any generic way to answer if I want to be polite but not strange? I think she was rude to laugh at me but I get that I might've done something strange.
>>
>>147045084
If Japanese people don't say anything in that situation, then saying anything will be strange.

>>
In the same vein as >>147045084 I've always been very confused and baffled at how people straight up ignore clerks and staff in general. Whenever one enters the shop/コンビに/whatever the clerk always greet in a very polite way but never gets acknowledged ever. Even when passing the items they never get a single "hello", and once again nothing when leaving.

I suppose it's a norm for them but I always thought it to be pretty rude. Where I'm from it's considered normal to be thankful for the service given, it doesn't matter if you're a customer, we're both human beings and deserve respect. I'm French by the way (so "bonjour" / hello, "merci (beaucoup)" / thanks (a lot), "aurevoir" / bye, bonne journée / have a great day" ).

I was also using my Japanese ability so it's okay. It's actually even better since I'm applying it to learn something new. I'm like some multilingual freak now and it feels good.

Funny moment in the show I was watching. There was a challenge where the Japanese lady had to guess what the French one was talking about based on her French. She said "Ça sent le lys" and the Japanese lady took 'lys' for リス. She thought she was talking about a zoo but it was a flower shop.

It might seem insignificant but I feel like my world expanded just a little bit. Gave me a 'wow' moment for sure.

Might also be that people are really negative towards the French. Even French people. Don't know why though. The art and music are top tier.

People don't like blatant egocentrism around here, so someone starts to brag about something they're still beginner at, that's like asking to get bullied.

anon did say he was genuinely happy for you, going after him asking if he didn't have better things to do as a way to shield your fragile ego wasn't the best move to do here.

Didn't mean to come off that way. I think you were reading too much into my comment since I certainly didn't mean to offend anyone.
I was just happy that I was able to learn something with Japanese, which I'm intermediate at, I know I'm not perfect. I know that other people are multilingual and it's no big deal for them. But I think it's really cool and it's like I stepped into that world for a minute.
But yeah, this isn't the place for that I guess. We could all do with not taking this so seriously either and that goes for you too, friend.

So, /djt/ what's your go-to image in your head when you want to motivate yourself. I have a few:

>Going to a karaoke bar somewhere in Japan, everyone muttering about the gaijin, and then being pleasantly amazed when start singing Japanese songs like Cruel Angel's Thesis
>Going to a maid cafe and just having a pleasant conversation with one of the waitresses about whatever she's cosplaying
>Some little kid is amazed by the natural colour of my hair and asks if they can touch it. Their parent is annoyed at them for being so rude, but I say it's okay.

Any other weird visions you use to motivate yourself /djt/?

Imagining yourself in social situations having fun is not autism. It's creativity. It's the opposite of autism because you are imagining yourself in social situations.

Imagination:
> Everyone's pleasantly amazed

Reality:
> Nobody gives a fuck
> Maid cafe employees don't give a fuck
> Parents don't give a fuck

You can learn enough programming to get an entry level position in just a few hundred hours. Cut this time in half if you're a woman because of diversity quotas.

Japanese takes a couple thousand to not only be advanced enough in Japanese, but then you also have to learn how to translate it which is another skill on top. All of this for a very poor salary

You are right though. Playing RPGs and wanking off to cartoons is more fun than learning algorithms

So I've started learning basic kanji and am trying to properly understand when to read the kanji using its 音読み or 訓読み readings.

So far, I understand that if the kanji is either by itself or is used in conjunction with other kanji then it's most likely using one of its 音読み readings where if its attached with hiragana characters then you read it using its 訓読み readings.

What I want clarification on, is if the surrounding characters around the kanji are only katakana characters then would you always use the 音読み reading of it or does it differ case by case? For instance consider the word anime - アニメ where ニ is pronounced with its 音読み reading of "に”.

Shit has probably already been asked over a million times, but can someone explain me the fucking difference between the は and が particle? I've looked up Tae Kim and Imabi and other different sources but i'm just too fucking stupid to understand it. I got that basically は emphasizes what comes after, and が what comes before it. But that's basically it. が is used for new informations, but what the fuck are considered new informations? Can someone explain it to me in an idiot-friendly way? Fuck.

If you actually try to analyze them most particles are not as simple as you're lead to believe in beginner's courses, for example, looking up the は particle on a J-J dictionary I got 5 different definitions. It's would be a good idea to consult those definitions as you read and come across は being used in confusing ways, but it's not very helpful to try and understand them with no context to help.

Is there a page somewhere for this grammar structure? I can guess what it means but want to read up on it more and double check.

There's no special structure there, it's just the use of 溜まり and 溜まる side by side that makes it look so.

Is playing vidya and reading mangas with furiganas a bad thing ?
It makes the reading obviously faster than without, but i'm afraid it'll impact my long-term proficiency.

Is it ok to use those most of the time but still read each day a dozens pages worth of text without to flex my furiganaless muscles ?
Or reading with furigana at all will fuck me up and i'll 出来ない ?
>>
>>147057120
how would it be a bad thing
>>
>>147057120
>it'll impact my long-term proficiency.
It really won't.
You won't progress fast if you only read stuff with it but it's not going to fuck you over. Japanese read that shit for years, remember?
>>
>>147057120
Furigana is based for being just a look away if you don't know the reading, just try to look at the kanji first and check furigana afterwards.

That's how I did it, now I rarely check it. Unless I'm reading some edgy vn with Vietnamese chu nom for fucking verbs.
>>
>>147056867
>>147057108
Check some Japanese audio books, like sherlock holmes or similar.
>>
>>147057120
I don't know if it's just because I did kanji study but over time I just transitioned from furigana text to non furigana text without even noticing, I'm sure it's not as much of a crutch as you think

At first you'll feel like you're looking at the furigana all the time and cheating but it really isn't true.
The farther you go in a reading matter you'll find it unneeded to look at them. The hardest part of a game/book is always the beginning.

>>
>>147056069
Tae kim's explanation is not great, perhaps due to his poor grasp of english. Try to ignore it if you can, especially that "x is the one that is y" shit.
The general spirit is that は is setting the context of what follows (and persists until the next は), whereas が is specifically saying what the marked thing is doing or being (and persists only until the end of the clause).

Reading VNs is a hobby of mine that I would have done in English anyway if I weren't learning Japanese. And that is practically all I do for studying these days, so it's two birds in one stone.

It's really not. Most people who've stuck around here for 4 years or more also have N2 skills or higher. I took N2 after three years and I've never been in a Japanese class.

How important would you guys say it is to get a real solid grasp of grammar before I try to jump into reading more? Should I just pick up the bare basics and look everything else up as needed? Or try to get a stronger foundation to make things easier on myself?
>>
>>147072108
Once you know the word order, the basic particles and the basic verb/adjective/copula conjugations you should start reading.
>>
>>147072108
depends on how you define "solid grasp"
personally i would advise against attempting to read before reading Tae Kim or JtMW

It's better for self study as it teaches you all you need to begin reading. Genki goes pretty slow and takes along time to get through and still isn't enough for reading.
>>
>>147072279
Well I understand that, but I guess what I meant was is it necessary to memorize tons and tons of grammatical constructs you may run into ahead of time, or just learn the most basic ones and get the rest as you go.

>>147072262
Ah, brainlag... obviously in the other order.

>>
>>147072305
Its also highly unrealistic. Don't burnt out so fast and give up. Pacing is important. If I forced myself to do more than 20 new cards a day there's a good chance I would have given up a long time ago.

They definitely are not worth the money; there are tons of duplicates and compound words that are obvious and are not necessary so it's like you're only getting 2000 cards for the price of 5000 (actually, 5000 cards wouldn't even be worth what he is charging).

If you really want to try his method, just take the Core deck and modify it yourself to fill in the blanks between cards.

I know this because I have been working my way through the JALUP shit and I am up to 4750/5000. Yeah, I'm lazy and I wasn't impressed with Core. If there is one good thing, I guess I like how the Japanese definitions in the JALUP deck reinforce things that have been learned.

A user on that site shared his 4250 cards, it is at the bottom of this entry: http://japaneselevelup.com/stories-of-japanese-masters-in-the-making-8/
At least that shit is free.

One last thing to mention about the JALUP 5000; they only go through ~1200 unique kanji.

Grind Core10k 100 cards per day, read a couple of dojg grammar points per day, read for a couple of hours and mine new vocab which is not in Core, listen to Japanese podcasts all the time. Later start doing JLPT exercises and kanji/vocab/grammar that you may have missed by are required by it.
Though it's not like you can actually do it without a severe autism or drugs.

Something like that -- I make that much in a day so I didn't mind and it's pretty clear that making the decks would be a pain in the ass, so he kind of earned that. It's unfortunate that it wasn't a community project though. The quality and quantity of cards could be so much higher if that were the case.

>Seriously? I thought that Expert deck was supposed to take you to like N2 or some shit?
Hah, yeah, not even close. I haven't tried to take any tests... but NHK News Easy is pretty easy to read.

If you already have an Anki deck from the past, just pick up with that one without restarting it. Otherwise you could always start a new deck and just press "Easy" on things that are too easy for you to push them way out (or delete them -- deleting them might be better depending on how well you remember whatever it is).
