I saw this same first episode in a movie theatre in Tokyo about 3 weeks ago. There was also roughly a 20 minute interview of the animation studio who are animating the three episodes.

I'd say Chise's development is pretty great. And the series makes a lot of points about how Chise could grow so much more outside of Elias, like going to a magic school. I would be bothered if the series completely ignored how Elias' fucks up a lot with understanding humanity, but it doesn't. Instead it has both Chise and Elias learning from each other.

So knowing that, I went and read some of the manga chapters.

This whole bride ordeal is put facetiously, as a reference of older times when grown men used to force teenagers in marriage.
The horned dude has no such intentions, he just worries about the extinction of mages and sees her as a successor.

A good read up until now and the art is superb, must be monthly for this kind of detail and quality to be achieved.
My only complaint are the lacklustre action scenes and even weirder is the fact that this is categorized as shounen when it's clearly at least partly shoujo.

I haven't read either translation so I can't really comment, but in Japanese it's not like he's not well spoken per-se, but he doesn't have the kind of almost haughty gravitas a voice like Jouji's would have, at least not most of the time. He's got this subtle innocent and kinda immature tone a lot of times (the "boku" pronoun usage is the easiest thing to point to specifically, but it's not the only thing).
