Fun thing I found while searching: the illustration of an immortal in episode 2 has similar feathers and a hair piece to Shoufukan's. I don't think he's bothered by the sword so much as by the people. Something like "the sword's yours, do what you like with it, but I can't help getting involved if someone makes trouble for me." Also his worry about Keigai joining was probably more let sleeping dogs lie than being an opposing force. If we're going by clothing, shofukan's dressed like how people in ancient china are dressed while pipe guy and co. are dressed in more fantasy/modernised take of it, like the sort you find in RPGs. Basically, shofukan seem to dress like he's from the world of wuxia while the rest (dong li people) are dressed more like they're out of xian xia.

His actions were always puzzling, he seems to pick the more difficult option each time, crossing a cursed desert, trying to go through the labyrinth without the flute, wanting to kill Betsutengai instead of fucking back to where he came from ect.

There was a Long Wolf and Cub film that used that plotpoint. There was an enemy ninja who didn't try to kill the protagonist directly, but simply murdered every single person he meets where ever he goes, after the protagonist leaves them. The protagonist ended up travelling up a mountain and stayed in a lonely hut, making sure there are no one else with him, and then confronted his enemy.

Frankly I am surprised that this isn't done much in Western stories. Most of the time the villain just threaten direct families or close friends, and then get defeated. But by threatening EVERYONE you ever met, it forces you to isolate yourself.

Yep, any time he buys something or uses something, he risks getting innocent people killed. This is next step up from just being hunted, this is threatening your social circle. We don't know where he was originally going at the start of the show, but it is very likely it involves meeting some people he knows. And if he ignores his bounty it would possibly bring trouble to his intended destination.

Well, yeah. If you hadn't notice, reputation and how other people perceive them is a recurring theme here. The only truly strong people shown so far are Shou, Phoenix and Betsu. Everyone else are weak-tier scrubs that had been relying on their reputation to get by. It's only natural that Phoenix lost to Betsu since in a battle between strong people, the outcome was decided before their weapons are drawn. Everyone else is just a stepping stone to that ultimate conclusion.

You could argue Linsetsua has been shown to be strong too. We haven't seen him do anything physically, but his special smoke is definitely strong. We haven't seen him stab anyone, but you don't need to when you can make someone else do it for you.
