Buy aside from that, yeah, I do think that ES21 is amongst the best sports manga ever made.

Also, seeing Murata refine and eventually perfect his art throughout the series is super fun.

I think the biggest issue was right after the Christmas Bowl was over. That last arc was pretty unnecessary. But everything else was great. The wins and losses were all believable enough, and it actually felt like they had to work at it to get where they wanted. The time stop wizard was fucking great.

Why the hate for Christmas Bowl? If anything it was necessary in order to further cement the fact that Sena is worthy of the title he carried throughout the series. ES 21 was meant to be the fastest, not the most balanced nor powerful and him showing that to Yamato was epic as hell.

biggest issue was that every other villain team both were better villains than the alexanders and also were better fleshed out when redeemed afterwards than the alexanders. The whole team just felt like cardboard cutouts, which was a massive let down when you look back on nearly every other team and their highlight moments. The alexanders wound up more on par with the cupids, or the scorpions than the white knights or the dinosaurs in terms of impact.

ES21, Slam Dunk and Teppu are the only sports manga I could stomach.

While it would be funny to have the refined, princely team sound like a bunch of hicks, I don't think the 11s would have gone for it. Besides, Shin and Sakuraba were way too involved in the story to be in a different district. Also, I hated the entire idea of there being a "real" Eyeshield 21, it was contrived and stupid.

I figure the point of any shonen sports manga is to make it look really interesting from a spectators standpoint, as well as get people hype at the idea of playing those games. Eyeshield 21 is the only sports manga I have ever really loved, it's in my top five series. I adore how each member of the team was just fully built people, the whole team grew together, and as individuals. Musashi was the only one I felt needed to show up sooner to have more interaction with the team, but it didn't sour the experience at all.

Knowing it's going to happen five seconds before it happens isn't being telegraphed. Few people predicted that the match would end with Musashi, whereas EVERYONE predicted that the Oujo match would end with Sena vs Shin.

More to the point, we were never arguing over whether or not it's a good moment, it's just that the Christmas Bowl was mostly fucking garbage and this one moment is apparently the sole reason it's one of the best games in the entire series in your eyes despite literally everything else dragging it down. It IS a good moment, but it's not the best, it's not even Musashi's best. Your reasoning is lacking.

The only thing the match doesn't have is antagonists who had been around awhile. But the same could be said about most of the games in the series. We didn't know much about Zokugaku, Taiyou, the Americans, Kyoshin, or Bando until just before their match with Deimon. The only ones that were really set up properly were Seibu, Shinryuuji, Oujo, and maybe Hakushuu.

If I would have changed one scene of the story, I would got rid of Gaou and replaced him with a more sinister underdog like a darker Kurita to give him a worthy foil to his character arc and to strongly empathise that the Dinosaurs were basically the Evil Devil-Bats. Gaou felt more like a obstacle or tool for character development than a character.

Antagonists that were good, interesting, or around at all, period. As for Bando and the American team, the lead up for the American team was several months worth of chapters, and the Bando kicker showed up years before their match, and they were showcased in the early stages of the tournament, as were Kyoshin. And while it's true we didn't see much of Zokugaku and Taiyou, those are both early matches and neither team are the bestest, most awesomest team evar like the Alexanders are supposed to be. Also, playing up the meritocracy angle as if it's somehow abnormal and having the teachers actually wear togas was fucking stupid.

Hey most of the Alexanders like Yamato, Taka and Hercules were bland and boring and the only interesting one was Karin who was the only female player in the manga and was basically the female Quaterback version of Sena.

When had to follow up from great villains like Marco and Kisaragi (also Gaou but nobody really seems to like him) who were not only a huge threat but funny in their own way and shown a side of the tournament with a battle of the underdogs who took different paths.

I started reading this a couple of weeks ago and I'm on Chapter 223 now, in the middle of the semi finals against Ojou, and it's been really getting boring. The way it creates tension and powerful rivals is really cheap. The title of Eyeshield 21 not being some shit Hiruma made up was a terrible decision, too. Also, most matches follow the same formula. It all seems hopeless until they win at the last second. It's honestly disappointing because I was really liking it up until the game against Poseidon.
