Another question, anons...
What's a good expression for something you say indiscreetly, directly, like a slap in the face, to someone?
As if you're making fun of someone with something they're conscious about and don't want/like to hear.

"Why does even you have [to say that to my face like a slap]?"

English is so hard.

Guy: You, a virgin!?
Girl: S-so what? Why do you (not even my friend) need to make fun/toss that to my face?

He obviously didn't intended to, but that's how she took.
"Toss to my face" is an expression in my language but I don't think it makes sense in english.

Probably not what you want to hear, but I would stop translating into English. I'm ESL as well and released some chapters in "English", but in the end I grew frustrated with my lack of skills and gave up.

It took me forever to look up words and ideoms. In the time it took me to translate one chapter into English I could have translated three into my native language. I was more of a chore than fun. And despite my best efforts the translation still sounded off.

I think there are many people out there reading manga in your language, so you would still have many reader for your project.

Portuguese-BR actually, not that it has that much of a difference.

Já pensei em traduzir pornô só pra PT-BR por causa desses desgraçados "ESL isso, ESL aquilo" mas ninguém lê hentai em PT-BR e soa tosco pra cacete...

>>146967497
I already thought of that, and I've read that a lot too, BUT... instead of getting frustrated I'd rather get motivated to learn the shit out of it and get native fluency.

I'm also ESL but I don't think my english is bad at all. Of course that I lack a lot of knowledge since I don't experience it everyday (for example I don't know how they call "phones" regularly, if they say "cell", "phone", "cellphone", "mobile" or w/e) but I don't feel lacking in either reading or writing probably because I kept at it...

I mean, there's no reason to give up when you have nothing to lose, you're only getting more from the experience.

Stuff I grabbed from everywhere (Photoshop):

- Don't use text boxes, use freetyping (press T and click instead of dragging a box).
- Mind the bubbles so they match shapes, like bubbles or squares. Don't make those noise-like shapes with it.
- Avoid breaking words whenever you can. Most of times it's preferable to put a stroke around it and bleed it out the bubble than breaking huge words and messing the flow of the bubble.
- Mind the reading flow of the bubble last, try to not put COMMAS and DOTS in the middle of the line but in the end instead, same for words/expressions with objects:
"I'm going to buy you a new one."
I'm // going to // buy you // a new // one.
Reads better than:
I'm going // to buy // you a // new one.
- Please center the text properly.
- Always punctuate.
- Please don't use vertical writing unless you know what you're doing and it looks readable (keep spacing to a minimum when you do).
- Do pick a different font or at least a style for different dialogue types, many people overlook this. For example using ITALIC for thoughts and thought-narration boxes (and also dialogue quotes). Using the same font for everything but SFX looks bland.

This is what I could remember that I try to apply when typesetting...

Why no text boxes? They're more comfortable to work with, at least for me.
>Do pick a different font or at least a style for different dialogue types, many people overlook this. For example using ITALIC for thoughts and thought-narration boxes (and also dialogue quotes).
Why? Changing fonts when the original author did should be enough and closer to the original work.
>>
>>146969737
I also use textboxes. But if you're a noob it's better not to use them
>>
>>146969552
>Don't use text boxes, use freetyping (press T and click instead of dragging a box).
There's really no reason to do this. You get the same results either way, but using text boxes makes it easier for someone to change it later if needed. Not by much, but it adds up really fast when there's a lot of text.
>>
>>146969552
If the author only uses one font then you should too
>>
>>146969737
>Why? Changing fonts when the original author did should be enough and closer to the original work.
I agree for anything except thoughts, but it's pretty standard in English that thoughts go in italics both in comics and ordinary prose. It just makes you look like you don't know how English works.

Who cares? English comics also put every second word in a sentence into italics which is fucking retarded.
>>
>>146969737
>Why no text boxes? They're more comfortable to work with, at least for me.
Text boxes limit your working mechanically and you lose control/freedom of what you can do with it.
For example, if you want to bleed out of the bubble with a stroke, then your textbox doesn't match the original bubble anymore so it's kinda pointless.
So, when you start to mind about the reading flow, you want a better control and limiting textboxes prevent you from doing this.
Of course, this is is you're using the textbox as the limiting are of your bubble, not if you make a huge box and just work inside it.

>Why? Changing fonts when the original author did should be enough and closer to the original work.
Because japanese and english are totally different beasts.
Japanese doesn't have italic, to begin, and changing fonts in japanese is usually only to show a change in the tone or mood of the dialogue.
Like >>146969936 said, it's common in english to use italics for thoughts/quotes.
Same goes for narration boxes.

Also, check this page, there's some basic examples of what a good vs bad typesetting looks like:

<Text boxes limit your working mechanically and you lose control/freedom of what you can do with it.
Then you're making the box too small. You can't say something doesn't work well if you're going out of your way to use it wrong.

So many fucking typos, wtf

Check image, using a limiting textbox fixes you the "Rags" issue, but causes the "Widows and Orphans"

If you don't use textboxes you can do the "Rags" yourself as you're typing (better than a machine) and won't get widows/orphans either.

>>146970294
Check >>146967914 first bubble "You're a virgin!?"
It bleeds out of the original bubble, it's a shout so it has to be big enough to look like a shout, and if you use a textbox around the original bubble you can't get that, you'd need a bigger one... and this in itself would defeat the whole idea of using a textbox to limit yourself to a space.
>>
>>146969049
>it's because it's in another fucking language
Oh, so you're just an EOP being retarded.
>>
>>146970501
>and this in itself would defeat the whole idea of using a textbox to limit yourself to a space.
The point isn't to limit yourself to a space, the point is so you don't have to keep hitting enter and make more work for yourself. Either make a bigger text box or transform the text to make it thinner so it doesn't bleed out in the first place (assuming it doesn't in the raw, if it does then disregard that).
>>
>>146970501
You're a // virgin // !?

That's big enough. Bleeding out + white stroke looks terrible
>>
>>146970501
That does not apply to usage of text boxes at all since you're supposed to do the line separation manually anyways to get a nice bubble shape.

Textboxes aren't used to limiting the space. I normally make them much bigger than necessary. They're useful because they're easy to rotate, move, center text horizontally and generally work with.
>>
>>146970501
>Check image, using a limiting textbox fixes you the "Rags" issue, but causes the "Widows and Orphans"
If you're getting widows/orphans, you have multiple paragraphs in each bubble and are doing something horribly wrong.
And letting the text bleed out of the bubble is an instant giveaway that the typesetter has no idea what they're doing.
>>
>>146970754
>You're a // virgin // !?
Punctuations on their own lines look horrible.
If you really are so against leeding out of the box then make a line for each word and hypenate the longe ones.
You // are // a // vir- // gin!?
>>
>>146970754
That's subjective, I prefer it like that than having tight text in a bubble.

>>146970759
Then you're using it the "right way", and if you're using it like that you don't even the box itself.
Like you said, you should be doing the linebreak yourself and not letting the box do it, unlike >>146970702 who wants to save his Enter key.

The point is that using the box as if it's the bubble constraint and letting it auto-fix everything for you will obviously look worse than your own judgement, so you don't need to use it.

One of the most visually impacting effects in reading is the shape of the text/bubble, and to get a nice shape, like >>146970759 said, you'll probably have to do the linebreak yourself.
The textbox doesn't think "oh, breaking it like this looks better", it just breaks when the line's full.

Free text isn't less work, and it isn't the case either. It's what looks better, a textbox trying to fit text into it's box or a human trying to shape it into something good?

Nope, it's the actual truth about translating japanese to english.

I related greatly because it was exactly as he says, you expect the translator to be like a machine making the JP > EN conversion, but it's not really like that.
Basically, in the "good translations" at least, what you're reading in english is probably totally different than the author's original lines.

Because of the structure, culture, among others, a word by word translation simply doesn't work, so good translators have to read a sentence, understand the meaning (tones and such) and come up with an english equivalent that is probably totally different from the literal japanese sentence.

So, in short, he says that the japanese knowledge is about 40% of the translation, the other 60% goes to the translator's writing skills.

One example I had just now:
そのキモイおっさんの指や舌で気持ちよくなってんのは誰だ
lit. "Who is getting to feel good from that gross geezer's finger and tongue?"

This sentence is provoking in japanese, and that literal doesn't carry the same meaning. A more fitting translation would be:
"Then why are you feeling good from that gross geezer's finger and tongue?"

The expression is totally different from the original, but the meaning is closer...

TL;DR: Learn moon.
>>

Why the fuck do you keep putting this in all of your posts?
>>
>>146974796
>A more fitting translation would be: "Then why are you feeling good from that gross geezer's finger and tongue?"
That sounds like something an ESL would write. Try "Then why do that gross geezer's finger and tongue make you feel good?"
>>
>>146974796
Translating something into English from Japanese is almost impossible to make enjoyable unless you're aware that it was originally Japanese I think, they're ludicrously different culturally.
>>
>>146973079
Yes because that's asking a lot considering there's no incentive you mook,
>>
>>146974998
Yeah, I'm not english native, but even so that's the difference in sentences that the author points in that page.

So it's kinda like you're reading the translator's words/expressions and such, not the author anymore, and this is without mentioning localization.

If I have higher quality raws of a series that already has a good translation, generally speaking, will the release group who did the editing/translation for the earlier scans at the lower quality be cool with me just using their translations and applying it to the better raws, maybe with some minor corrections?

How taboo is it in the scvan community to not even ask and to just do it? OR asking, them saying no, and doing it anyways?

>If they say no, fuck them.

Which is what i'm thinking, but I also don't wanna cause drama and get kicked out of private trackers for uploading a release that uses their translations without permissions and stuff like that.

It's worth noting this is hypothetical. I haven't asked yet, and i'm just assuming that if they say no, and I do it anyways, that it might "rock the boat" and get me in trouble.
>>
>>146978681
I wouldn't be.
>>
>>146978667
I'd be fine with them doing that if they wanted to, but it's a 350 chapter manga and it's pretty niche, I can't imagine they'd want to do it all over again.

That, and I've noticed some errors, and even if they said yes, I don't think they'd like me autistically going "btw here's a list of like 200 ierrors you made throughout the whole series, please fix those".
>>
>>146978703
>I also don't wanna cause drama and get kicked out of private trackers for uploading a release that uses their translations without permissions and stuff like that.
I can't think of any places that would actually kick you out. Worst case scenario, just release it and wait for someone else to upload them.

Sorry for being an idiot, but how would I be releasing it other then uploading it to begin with a public or private tracker?

>>146978852
I would obviously be giving them credit for the translation (though, again, i'd be making a few changes since I noticed some inconsistencies/stuff they interpreted wrong), though it's worth noting they don't even credit themselves in the scans they did, there's absolutely no sort of credit page or anything.
>>
>>146978957
If you put it on somewhere like Batoto, no one would kick you off or anything. I meant if you have some private tracker I'm not aware of that would, in which case put it somewhere public and someone else will probably reupload it for you.

I stopped typesetting because I was getting frustrated by, among other things, Photoshop. I started writing a program for typesetting manga, it works a bit differently from Photoshop and lacks many functions, but it's also faster and will have some nice functions designed for typesetting.
It won't do any cleaning or editing of the pages though, just the typesetting.
Would anybody be interested in using it when it gets to a workable state?
>>
>>146978374
Why do you think that's bad?

It's subjective, I think, and that does it's job. I think the point of that he couldn't translate it literally because it wouldn't give the same original meaning.
So, how would you translate it? I'm just curious.
>>
>>146979487
It might be useful for people who only typeset, but anyone who does multiple jobs isn't going to want to switch programs. You'd have to make sure it's perfectly compatible with Photoshop too.
>>
>>146974796
Doesn't really matter for manga. Manga is not high literature, the writing is simple and you can understand a good chunk with the pictures alone. It's also a saving grace that some things don't get translated like puns. That most puns are lost actually raises the quality of the writing since puns are shit tier humor.

He made things up.

The character isn't saying that the lack of volunteers is good or that he wants their lives.
Translating it literally it would be:
>Okay, I get it, give all of your lives to me.
Assuming he's demanding them to submit their lives because there are no volunteers, a translation could be something like:
>Alright then, so be it. I'll have all of your lives!

I'm sure that the "no one" could have been written differently as well. As it is it doesn't really show the annoyance of the character and how it was a rhetoric question. Something like:

Of course I'm only nitpicking because it's ironic how the guy who wrote that article missed his own point.

Without context there's no way to know what it is supposed to be.

Since this is kinda like a "context guessing", what if he was saying:
"Does anyone want to drop out?"
"No one?"
"That's good, because I want all of your lives!"

I don't think he missed the point, that's exactly what he said, the literal doesn't fit well so the translator has to come up with some other similar, equivalent sentence.

>>146982385
To get someone to call out to your translation you need either very poor grammar/bad writing, or a blatant discrepancy with the knowledge or image.
This might prompt someone to actually check your translation, because really, no one really bothers with it.

The people who can help probably doesn't read translations, and the ones who can't won't notice unless they're prompted to look into it by what I said above.

That's why you have some unfortunate "translations" out there...

I also posted my first translation here and no one commented on it, until I asked around and some /a/non helped me, but I don't know if he actually knew moon.

What would you like to do?
I think that "editing" often means all of these: cleaning, typesetting and redrawing, with some editors picking other people to do any of these separately if he can't or doesn't want to.

If you're worried about typesetting sex scenes, well, they're kinda like shounen or yell bubbles, except there's a lot of them and they're everywhere. And it gets repetitive as fuck after some time.

Uh... there's isn't one in particular... I just have a bunch of ones I'd like to someday translate, so I just leave them around.

If you want an easy one, there's a bunch of Cuvies (totally mixed stuff, but mostly vanilla) I'm planning on doing at the moment, the typesetting is a bit blander than most and some almost no redraws.
There's another one that has bestiality and requires insane amounts of redraws, if that's your thing.
Hmm I also have to redo a NTR one I did way back then with no redraws (it looks crappy as hell), so it's already translated but badly edited.
And another one that is a netori (guy stealing the girl) with average-ish redraws and already translated too.
Among many, many others...

Or, if you want, you can pick w/e you want and if it's not too complex I can help you with it.

The usages of ellipses are:
1. Omission of a section of text
2. Indicate a trailing off of thought or break in speech
3. Specifically in comic books to indicate the continuation of a sentence from one bubble to the next
You're obviously doing #2, and you're not speaking, so it can only point to trailing off in thought. So basically you're deliberately making it look like you're lost when you're typing like that. Instead of "Uh... there isn't one in particular... I just" you type "Uh, there isn't one in particular. I just" like a normal human being.

I recently finished my first scanlation attempt by myself, and I was surprised by the amount of time it took, even though the raws were already leveled and aligned properly.
>>
>>146986542
A few days usually, but I'm part of a big group. 3-4 days for a 20-30 page chapter and 4-5 days for a 50 page chapter.

Though in all seriousness, it's usually based around the amount of time you have available, how proficient you are, and how good your communication is with other workers.

Jumping in on the whole 歪み・原石・個性・磨く line here.

While "problems" is certainly a very natural way of expressing 歪み here, I think you can get do better with the overall metaphor imagery by considering such words as stress or tension.

With 原石 we should probably consider the term raw gem/gemstone over raw ore or raw/unrefined materials as it works better with the metaphor as it gets expanded on with 磨く.

個性 is fine as personality, but you can get even better by emphasizing the 個 part of 個性 as opposed to 性格. You could consider something pretty close to the literal "individuality," "individual characteristics," or a word with the individual quality of it as part of the definition like "idiosyncrasy," though there are some unwanted nuances there.

When you put the Japanese together, you get something pretty similar to the English expression that "stress makes diamonds." The metaphor uses similar language with 磨く and 原石. While 歪み for stress is not exactly perfect, when you talk about family problems, usually stress, tension, and strain are pretty common terms.

And that tension// is [what makes] the raw gem that forms our individual characteristics.

So she's [an example of] a raw gem that's been left unpolished?

I'll never ask for help again, but I fear I must in this case. We all know DJT won't answer this, so it is here I must ask:

I'm very uncertain about the following line. It's difficult to place "in context", because there are 'transitional' gaps between this line and the previous, and this line and the next, but it's still the same scene - two people talking about "burdens" or responsibilities. It is written like this (in case it makes any difference):

「分」を
わきまえぬ
お節介です。

From what I know, it seems like the character is calling [something] an inconsiderate/unwelcome irritant - and correct me if I'm wrong on that, please. But the real problem is that the significance/meaning of 「分」 is lost on me here. Through rifling through references and dictionaries, I found that 分 can be used to refer to 'duty' or 'lot in life' in some regard, both of which would allow the sentence to make sense. However, I cannot find any example sentences in which that kanji is used in that way, which makes that claim seem dubious. Might someone with a better understanding enlighten/assure me here? I've spent three days trying to figure it out myself, which is kinda my limit.
>>
How literally should I translate confused stammering?

>>
>>146990343
>inconsiderate
Seems correct.

>But the real problem is that the significance/meaning of 「分」 is lost on me here.
Is simply means "share", "part" or any equivalent in the abstract sense.
Pretty much like everything in japanese, you don't think on what it translates to, but what concept it represents.
The "duty" meaning also falls into this part if you think about it.

>分をわきまえぬ
"Not regarding the part" or anything that has the same meaning.
"Without considering the share"
"Ignoring the part"
etc

>お節介です
Meddling.

So it's meddling without considering/disregarding one's share/part, pretty much "inconsiderate", but to be a little more faithful to the original, now's the time you look for an english equivalent sentence/expression that portrays that instead of a single adjective and apply it.
>>
>>146991145

You're looking too much into it.
分をわきまえぬ is an expression, it's not meant to be taken so literally. The 「分」simply means it's trying to emphasize that part.
分を弁えない roughly means to do something unfit for you. The character is probably doing something the other considers to be rude or unfit for that person's social status.

On top of it all 分 by itself can simply mean one's status.

Here's a question for type-setters: when you break a full sentence into, say, two parts at a comma, do you append an ellipsis after the said comma?

For example: is 'What'd you say, man?' broken into 'What'd you say,' + '…man?' or 'What'd you say,…' + '…man?' I cannot decide which looks better.
>>
>>147008209
Why? I don't add an ellipsis, nips are already writing more than enough of them.

>>147008209
What'd you say... /man?
>>
>>147008209
Ellipses after any punctuation are fucking revolating
>>
>>147008209
When the dialogue feels like it's a single sentence, but divided into different bubbles, I use the ellipsis on both or only the latter if the preceding has comma.

>What'd you say,
>...man?

If they're on a connected bubble, I don't though.

>What'd you say,
>man?

I think the ellipsis in the later bubble, if it belongs to the same sentence, is a must to make it look as connected to the previous one.
Or it would be almost the same as:
(different bubbles)

>What'd you say?
>Man?

Thanks, those are good pointers. Though I'm torn on the subject of omitting ellipses on connected bubbles. Might be my personal issue, but the sentence always looks disjointed to me without them.

I've to find an example in Western comic books, since they actually have some sort of convention for this, but they're never type-set this way. It's always one bubble = at least one full sentence.

Hey folks, if you don't mind helping me again with translating:

On panel 3, Kururi says 「ルウの前にアクっっ」

My guesses would be that she's either saying "open the roux (packet) from the front" or that "the pot needs to be empty before adding the roux", but neither of those makes much sense.
This phrase seems like it should be simple enough, but it's escaping me completely.

I'm in no position to disallow that, but I've been given a lackluster translation of one volume and I was unable to use it, since it didn't do the justice to this work. I don't know what your skills are, but I'd really prefer if you'd send me the scripts first, as I have a good(through lazy) translator with good grasp on the Japanese pop-culture(and Halcyon simply fumes with obscure references). I also have know the people who'd like to typeset it. The script I've been given cut too much of the crucial detail so it was deemed no good. I hope you will do it better(at least on the level of already translated ch.1.)

We need TLCs in OniisamaTL. We are the group currently translating mahouka. We're finished up to vol 18 translating. TLC and editing remains. It'd be nice if we had more TLCs, as the one we currently have is occupied with school, it would help speed things up.

Write your own translation and ask if it's right, don't blog, don't outright ask for a full translation.

It's just a (maybe small) den of toxic regular retards who need to flaunt their (funnily enough, anonymous) epeen and spam memes.

Which is a shame to the thread, because it ruins for the other regulars there. It sure ruined it for me.

"Hey guys, let's translate this block of a light novel": 2 replies
"Hey guys, let's practice composition, how would you convince your sister to buy groceries for you?": 4 replies (because it's "sister")
"Hey guys, let's practice japanese: こんにちわ、どんな話しっていいの?": 1 reply

Then:
"guyz ganbaruZOI!": 35 replies
"YOU DEKINAI EHEHE": 47 replies

Such a productive thread...

or
"I'm glad you liked it, because it costed 100$."
or even something else?
>>
>>147032786
Cost.
>>
>>147032786
Cost is an irregular verb, "costed" should never be used.
>>
>>147032786
Grammatically, you want "cost $100".

Stylistically, I think it's fine, but I would lean towards "It cost $100, so I'm glad you liked it", unless another character is about to react to it like "What? $100?!?!"

Nope, "cost" is the past tense.

I think some people will use "costed" when it relates to a lost opportunity, e.g. "We could have won the game/gotten the business deal, but you costed us the opportunity."

I'm not 100% sure about that, but anyway, in cases of monetary price like this one, "cost" should be the past tense.
