I was playing Persona 2 and this name popped up. There wasn't any kana along with it and my quick Google search didn't turn up anything that gives me a reading. I'm not good with names, do any of you know what the reading could be or should I just guess?

Whenever I add a word I bring it to the top and if I encounter it again before I've seen it in Anki and I have to look it up then I bring it to the top again.

I didn't want to post off topic, but I've been struggling with this all day, and I don't know who to turn to.

I study Japanese like the rest of djt and want a Japanese job one day, but I also take chinese at school. I don't like chinese, and didn't like the Chinese people I tried speaking chinese with. And even with the chinese friends i do have, they really dont give a shit about hiw much chinese i can speak because they alresdy know english. But, I'm going into business and want to start a company one day or be a businessman in Japan. And so, everyone recommends I do chinese But. in order to chinese I've, I can't do physics, which I find interesting. I like reading physics, tslking about physics, it challenges your mind, and it desrlcribes the world we live in. But everyone who does physics is an engineer and not going into business, and Chinese is the opposite.

So, djt. What should I do? If im taking mandarin, I'm definitely going to be reading a lot more manhua, and I know chinese helps (just a little) with japanese.

Give mean honest reasons why I should like 中国語.

don't use a thesaurus, just boot up harukuru and you'll get all the words you ever need

>>146948148

study only chinese, drop physics and japanese. because japanese comes from chinese, by learning chinese you will by extension know japanese already, as well as know all the physics vocabulary you need thanks to the magic of hanzi.
>>
>>146948316
Does this work the other way around too with Japanese?
>>
>>146948500
It doesn't work either way.
>>
>>146948316
In all the 3 years ive taken chinese class, I have not found that chinese helps me with Japanese at all. Occasionally, I'll see some reoccurring characters like 去る in Japanese, and there was one character on the jlpt i knew from chinese, but most of the time, I knew the Japanese character first, so it's been more like japanese helped me with chinese.
>>
>>146948148
You shouldn't, mandarin's usefulness is a tremendously retarded meme.
Drop chinese like a bag of shit it is and study god damn physics.
>>
>>146948148
Learning Chinese to a professional level is very time consuming. University courses would only be a small supplement to your self-study (necessarily eating into your Japanese time). Even if you become one of the tiny portion of people who attempt to learn Chinese and succeed, it would be of marginal benefit unless you move to China. You do not need to speak Chinese to do business with Chinese companies. .If you want to live in Japan, you should obviously focus on Japanese.

Sounds convincing to me. I also already took mandarin 3 and passed the jlpt n4, so taking mandarin would purely be for college application. I just don't know how to convince the college counselor, physics has nothing to do with business. But, I think physics is necessary thing to know.

Thanks for the advice.
>>
>>146949096
Convince them that you have connections at an international contracting company that's about to make a huge deal with an industrial design firm, and physics is your best option at having a unique skill at the employment level you plan on being at in the contracting company, since you can bring mandarin and japanese to fluent levels much more easily in free time than physics to academic levels.
>>
>>146948951
If you are getting tired of anki, I honestly think you should start focusing on reading. I used tangorin example sentences. I found that if you read for a while, you'll naturally want to use ankii again because you'll develop the mood for wanting a memorization flash card system.

I think assimilation people learned most japanese by reading and listening a lot, but they use anki for words that show up like once a month.

Also, I can't take kanji studying seriously, unless I can actually write the character.

they either lie to themselves and don't press again when they got it wrong

>>146948148
You can't become a businessman in Japan unless you somehow study abroad, become fluent, and get scouted at a job fair during your senior year to secure a visa. Or, get a great job in the US which has an international department within Japan.

The only other way is to get a business visa, which amounts to about $50,000.

The chances of any of these are ridiculously tiny. There are lots of job offers on GaijinPot for engineers though, and it'd be a good way to get inside the country, and work your way up from there.

Thanks for reminding me of how hard what I'm thinking of is. So far, I took the jlpt n4, been to Japan for a month, and plane on doing 1 year abroad in my junior year of college.

My goal is the pass the jlpt n1 by junior year, and I really need to get a job so I can build my resume. My parents say I shouldn't get a job as a grocery bagger or games top employee till I'm accepted in a college.

I know a bunch of people irl really don't want me to go to pursue my japanese. But, I know I sound like a subhuman, but I've been screwed over by normies and norm values so much. I'm tired of having to satisfy normies. (Although, i do like social media) That, I'm just going to say fuck it, and do what makes me happy.

Besides, if my goal is not to get a job in japan, but to form a cartoon company and make Web animations. I'm pretty happy how I'm starting to get connections with more animators on tumblr!

I was depressed having my whole life being based being an starving artist, or trying to get some norm girlfriend, muh anime company is what keeps me going!

How long does it take to go from N3 to N2?
I know N5-N3 takes no time at all, but I want to take the N2 this December and I'm N3, according to JCAT, and I don't see a reason why I should go for the N3 first.
>>
>>146954761
There's no real reason to ever take anything below N2. Unless you're just doing it for fun.

No job is ever going to have an N3 requirement because that's just daily conversational level, and they can check that by just having a conversation with you.
>>
>>146954761

then no, you won't make it to N2 by the end of the year unless you severely increase your daily study time.

"It's impossible for somebody as plain and drab as myself to ever be something like an idol." なんて is the "something like" and is used for emphasis. She's placing idol status on a much higher pedestal than herself.

It's because nouns and na-adjectives are handled one way, i-adjectives and verbs are handled another. He gives examples only for one but you can substitute them.

学生なんだ、好きなんだ

In all of the examples, the ん is just a shortened form of の.

飲むんだ → 飲むのだ exact same thing

Ok one other question,
Whats the difference between

I get that the noun is conjugated in the first, and the 「んだ」 is conjugated in the second, I also get that 「んだ」 sets an explanatory note but when would you use one instead of the other?

Assuming it's spoken on its own as a response to events unfolding as the battle plan predicted or dictated:
>just as planned
>like clockwork
>no surprises here
>the plan bears out/checks out
>without a hitch
These are mostly not direct translations, but that's the price you have to pay for not sounding clunky.

Could you conjugate both the noun AND the 「んだ」 to create some sort of double negative?

And what if we cut the negative form and keep the past form instead?

What does conjugating 「んだ」 into 「んじゃない」 / 「んだった」 / 「んじゃなかった」 even do?

What level should I expect to be able to read simple moege and get most of it (though still be looking up a fair bit of words as I go)? Is Core2K + Genki enough for a foundation for this?

Tae Kim instead of Genki and yes you could, but don't be mistaken, even if you'd do core6k or even 10k you'll have to look up words and it'll be hard at first.

I hate myself, I'm a lazy faggot.

If there was someone that would step on my dick and say "you're going to learn these 500 words until tomorrow and read for 5 hours" I would probably progress a lot more.

But nooo I don't have to worry about anything in life so I end up being a lazy piece of shit.

fuck me
>>
>>146973386
I did Tae Kim a couple of years back during my first foray into trying to learn Japanese (which only lasted a few weeks) but I don't remember actually retaining much of it, is why I thought I'd try Genki this time.
>>146973382
I tried the whole "dive in way before you're ready and hope you come out knowing more when you get to the other side" approach, but honestly it was just kind of miserable. Admittedly I did it when I only knew about 500~ words and now I'm around 1600~ (not counting new/immature cards) so maybe I'd do better, but I'd like to at least get through the 2k deck before trying again, just so that I can enjoy it at least a LITTLE bit and not just be looking up literally every single word.
>>
>>146973503
500 new words a day is way too much, not surprising you'd burn out at this rate. You're better off just doing a small, manageable amount each day but staying very consistent about it, you will learn better this way. Ignore all the people who try to dickwave about how fast they are, it's not a race and really doesn't matter how long it takes you.

You need to set yourself daily goals in order to discipline yourself. Create a I am a deepshit.txt on your desktop and note :

[ ] Watch anime at least x1

Check the [x] like this whenever day ends. Goal is to check them all. Start that way, increase the number of daily goals as you go on (i.e. : more chapters, more lessons, more reps, etc...). Keep in mind that what I put there isn't much, it's because I don't want to burn you right away.

A few months ago, there was only Jamal. But now it isn't just him. Take a look at >>146967687 for example.

This clearly isn't Jamal; Jamal is a socially progressive fellow and dislikes racial slurs. This is his Achilles heel - he generally will not bite any sort of bait and just does his own thing. But if you post racially charged language he often will reply mocking you or asking you to stop. So the post I quoted is most certainly an imitator.

I don't hate Jamal as a person but he certainly has lowered the quality of DJT. His posts have more impact than they would normally because his posting quirks have inspired a league of imitators, right down to the 爆笑's. At least the lower average post quality means I spend less time shitposting here and more time reading.

"Koharu panicked, because you said weird things."

What's with the じゃない at the end? Is it like "..., didn't she" (koharu panicking) or "..., did you not" (amane saying weird things)?
>>
>>146980186
Yes, うち is your in-group. A family, a school, a company, whatever. But うちのお母さん or something just means "my mother," there's no need for pointing out some deep, untranslatable inner meaning.

"Koharu panicked because you said weird things, didn't she?!"

That's a pretty shit translation though desu. Drawing a direct parallel between sentence-ending じゃない and some form of "didn't" in english helps for early understanding but that sounds awkward.

How about "Amane! You're freaking Koharu out so quit being creepy!"

Reading is actually BAD for long term retention. If you review something in Anki then see it while reading before the card is due, it defeats the purpose of spaced repetition. So remember, don't read unless you want to fail at learning Japanese and always have poor retention. Anki is the key to success.

>>
>>146982870
This is good advice, you only retain a language if you space it out properly. This is scientifically proven.

That's why so many Japanese speakers turn hikikomori. They want to escape conversations detrimental to their knowledge.

私は公園でお弁当を食べた。
公園で私はお弁当を食べた。
お弁当を私は公園で食べた。
弁当を食べた。
食べた。

Having a hard time understanding this from Tae Kim. I don't get why particles can be used without any specific ordering, other than the generic rules which condition their use. Why can を be placed at the beginning of お弁当を私は公園で食べた? Doesn't を directly modify the object and must therefore be followed by a verb?

>>
>>146983116
>I don't get why particles can be used without any specific ordering
They can't, you have to use them after the word or clause they modify.
You can switcheroo words and clauses though.
>>
>>146983116
Particles are like suffixes.
>お弁当を
を means that お弁当 is the object. It doesn't matter where in the sentence お弁当 appears, it is the object because it has を after it.
>>
>>146983116
It is followed by a verb, just at the end of the sentence
>>
>>146983358
So を designates any word before it as an object, and the relationship that word has to the rest of the sentence is as an object? Thanks

One thing that I have found that is helpful is that if two kanji or vocab looks similar write them both down and figure out the difference.

Once you figure it out you never mess it up again.
