You don't necessarily have to care about the characters involved to cry over a scene, it just has to be done the right way (which is why most people end up crying at garbage like Shigatsu and Anohana even if they dislike the rest of it, including the characters).

Meruem needed to die but the scene is still sad as fuck to experience because of the execution. The dialogue and (lack of) visuals worked really well.

most of it is carry-over from the 2003 anime. he's way more in-depth and is around for a lot longer in that one. since the first half of both series are technically the same story, in most people's perspectives there's no difference between the two iterations of the character. the brotherhood incarnation just makes the feelings from the original resurface.

I never knew how to feel about the end of Ai-Ren.

I thought it was building up to his world crashing down for trying to live a love that was an illusion from the start. That it was selfish and destructive that he had created a short and fragile life that was never given the option not to love him or live for herself. But in the end, I guess that watching her die first and going on without her was the real tragedy they were building up to. That no matter how fake or genuine his time with Ai was, it would come to an end like everything else inevitably would.
