Boogiepop's anime had fucking fantastic audio, but it fails as an adaptation for not starting at the beginning. You either have to be an LN reader or watch the live action (shit, aside from the soundtrack) movie to fully get what's going on.
I love it just for the atmosphere and some of the individual arcs that have little to do with the overarching story, but I can see why it's not rated highly.

Went into El Cazador De La Bruja with some low expectations. It turned out to be one of my favorite road trip anime of all time. The music is freaking great, and the dynamic between Nadie and Ellis is great.

Also its a great companion piece to Michiko to Hachin, another road trip anime with female protagonists and a similar setting that is tragically unknown.

Anime has always looked homogenized at a glance. It's a similar thing with music where if you were to get into a certain genre of music and listened to a bunch of it but then listened to only a few songs from another, the genre you've experienced more of will look more diverse than the other one. There's also the fact that many anime have similar artstyles, such as Galaxy Express 999 and Harlock in the 70s and Kokoro Connect and K-ON! in the 2010s, because they have the same character designer. They're not all inherently one-dimensional, though. For example, Taiga from Toradora! is a tsundere but that aspect of her is very well-justified throughout the series. Anime biopic about Kenji Miyazawa, one of Japan's most appreciated authors, done in the style of his writing, as most of his characters were cat anthro.

I recommend everyone checkout Geneshaft. It does genetic engineering/futuristic sci-fi the way it should be done. I don't understand how it can possibly be an issue, they're meant to be ignored and don't contain new content. If they weren't obligated to air something, recap episodes wouldn't even exist. As is, they prevent production issues from interfering with the actual series, they leave the pacing and plot progression completely unaffected and that's why you're actually meant to judge the series on.

I found the recap episodes to be really helpful, helped show me the character development and was a nice reminder of the plot up until that point. There was enough content in the recaps to keep it interesting enough, it's not like you had already seen three recap episodes of the same events before+a recap of the whole anime at the start of every episode, like certain other anime.
It was perhaps a little bit much, but it's not like it was enough to ruin anything, they were good enough.

It has to be said Wolf's Rain was like the third or fourth anime I saw after I got into anime, though. So my experiences may have been at a low, newbish level.
