I really dont get him. At the one hand they try to pitch him as the nice human kind of ajin that tries to do good, like with the doctor he saves. Then they try to make him a sociopathic dude who doesnt give a shit. And he suddenly says he only saved the doctor to get him indebted to him. He's a highly functioning sociopath. He followed what was considered to be kind and righteous human to the point of absurdity (e.g being fine with torture). Basically like a robot imitating regular humans. Eventually th gig was up/pointless and h stopped trying, or at least that was general portrayal.

Really though the original writer left and the artist who took over didn't want to write about a goody two shoes MC and would rather write about an intelligient sociopathic one.

Honestly i think the story was better off for especially if you go a read what the original writer ditched it to write about. Artist seemed to have thought through a properly fleshed out this manga likely moreso than he original writer would of.

Pay attention. There was an important thing he said that you missed.
He *thought* very hard about why he saved the doctor, and in the end he realized that it was because the doctor would be useful later.

He is not a sociopath. He is an unhealthily rationally thinking person. But that doesn't mean he doesn't feel anything.
Think back to when he was being killed again and again and again by those scientists.
He said he wouldn't kill (because of his friend)

What he feels is subtle, and he can easily ignore it, usually without even realizing that he had an emotion at all. That's why the audience has to pay even more attention.

It's a surprisingly nuanced conflict between the two. The thing is, some people just perceive things differently, feel differently, and have different perspectives on pain, suffering, goals and ideals. Someone CAN not be as shocked at suffering as easily as the average pussy and have the mental toughness to not feel very sorry for others, and still get very sad at some kind of unjust or pointless suffering. He's a very straightforward character that has been very laid off in each of his actions and interactions. You need a brain and think for yourself (pretty weird stuff!) to pay attention while you read (pretty hard stuff) and see how he wants to be accepted (shown when he was being trained before this arc fiasco) and wants to repay others because he feels like it is something tragic, overblown and sad if others suffer for him and he does nothing for them (the doctor, Kai, and the bald mercenary). On the other hand, he just doesn't give a shit otherwise. It's not that he is a "un-nice" guy. It's not a meme brain mutation. He simply doesn't feel anything if they don't go out of their way for him. And that is a possible and not so weird response to have.

This is a very common problem.
For several years now I found myself more and more rooting for the antagonists instead of the protagonists.

They're usually either better characterized with deeper motives or they are at least batshit insane and (at least in early appearances) style all over the protagonists, which personally I find immensely entertaining.

Meanwhile I get the feeling the author wants me to root for the protagonist for no other reason than them being the protagonists, which simply does not work with me.
Being morally right is irrelevant for me. He could be a child rapist and molester of invalids for all I care, as long as he is interesting I will root for him.

Aizen and Madara are perfect examples. I wanted the stories to end with them riding into the sunset laughing. They're not at all deep as people, but immensely enjoyable to watch.
Meanwhile Naruto is an annoying little shit, but at least he has his own character, even if it's a shit character. On the other hand I never liked Ichigo. He always came across as someone who just reacts to things around him, with the personality of a wet noodle to boot. It's like staring straight into the void.

At least Homu when she actually got her chance at trying her hand at changing stuff didn't negate Madoka's entire wish - wraiths are mentioned and heavily implied to be around. Thus, no witches, no soul gem becoming grief seed. Not that there's anything necessarily wrong at changing stuff when you have the power to do it - both Madoka and Homura did it in their repective times when given the opportunity. But going from that to claim that Homu is to blame for negating Madoka's wish and its entire point - an obvious distortion of the facts - all while claiming that QB was neutral in this aspect, when their goal for a time once was all about subverting Madoka's entire wish and its effects until they failed at it, constitutes either extreme intellectual dishonesty or really profound stupidity in the case you actually believe your version of the events.

See that's the thing, I love 0079 Char, I love CCA Char, I love the growth of the character, but I just can't pay attention during Zeta. I like Zeta, I think it's pretty good, but for some reason I find it difficult to concentrate.

For that reason, I find Quattro to be the weak link. I can see what people say about Quattro and how the character arcs link together, and I can understand the outcome, but I just can't feel it.

I want to believe the new manga the artist is doing is basically that.
As for the ending card showing that their off together somewhere, I think it was a mystery on purpose because seeing them happy would ruin their image. They constantly were seen as characters who made others upset to make themselves happy, so its pretty much the perfect ending to have the reader not be able to see them a final time.
