I tend to be more drawn to the serious style, but goofy style is welcome too, and represent some of my favorite installments of the genre.

I haven't seen the new adaptation of this because no Amano no Buy

No, some of the best fantasy anime are isekai, and there's not really any huge plague of isekai anime currently, anyway, despite what people like to complain about. The plague is in WNs/LNs, it's very minor in anime/manga.

Oh fuck yeah, I love Dragon Half. A little ashamed I forgot it.

Disappointing that there are only two episodes but at least that means I can rewatch it a hundred times.

I generally watch both this and Elf Princess Rane once a year

>isekai

Nigga what?
>>
>>146860446
Dragon half is fucking hilarious. One of my favorite.
>>
>>146858266
But Lodoss War was really boring.

It's an utterly generic DnD campaign and not in a good way. The presentation and directing isn't good enough to support uninteresting plot and boring characters.
>>
>>146860370

I wanna bang that elf, why is there no porn
>>
>>146860556

Sorry you feel that way, it's quite literally my favorite anime of all time.

And that's cherrypicked pretty much the worst animated part of the show. It's great when it's at it's peak, but it's very true that the budget is not distributed equally and things tend to drop hard and get over-used in crowd battle scenes.
>>
>>146859041
I really liked the first episode of Ruin Explorers, and then Rance's lame cousin shows up and the show proceeds to focus on him for the next three episodes.

In short, it's good until the world's blandest and most generic protagonist shows up with an equally generic backstory and plot, and then he shoved everybody else out of the spotlight until Ihrie is barely in the final episode at all.

It was a huge disappointment. They didn't even explore ruins in the second half.

I don't want to shit in your cereal or anything and I can see why people who are down for the purest DnD classic fantasy possible would love it, but I just can't get into it. I thought it was what I wanted, but unfortunately not.

There were a few highlights of good animation in the second half but most of the first half was unfortunately all still pans.

I actually like the TV series a lot more. It's more animated as a whole, the Shooting Star showdown is the climax of the first arc of the show and is a really great episode, and Asuram is a really charismatic and interesting villain in it.

And even Spark, who you would expect to be the most original-character-do-not-steal ever is actually a fairly engaging protagonist with a better party than Parn.

It also has the most based dwarf war priest. The dwarves are always the best party members.

And for pic related, he says this in a setting where so far all of the knights have been absolutely obsessed with honour.
>>
>>146860746

I'm well aware that it's not for everyone; I have a hard time finding other people who enjoy it these days, honestly, even though years ago it used to be huge.

You're literally the first person I've ever heard recommend the TV series. I dropped it after two episodes, largely because everyone was telling me how shit it was.

I've read the Chronicles of the Heroic Knight manga, but it seems clear from the early episodes that the show deviates pretty hard from that.

It's Scrapped Princess. The last couple of episodes wrap up the plot kind of weirdly but it's not like they're show-ruiningly bad or anything.
>>
>>146860696

I see this recommended in fantasy threads a lot but I just couldn't get into it

It comes off too anime-tropey for me and the art's not really doing a lot for me
>>
>>146860805

Maybe I'll give it another look
>>
>>146860822
Give it another shot, the animation ranges from okay for a low budget show to occasionally embarrassingly abysmal like in episode 5, but overall it's okay.

And don't watch the SD segments at the end of the episode. Spare yourself the pain.

What really pissed me off was how Shannon was so wary and suspicious, like a good bodyguard should be, then with hours left, he allows this dude claiming to be Pacifica's brother WHO HAD ALREADY ORDERED A HIT ON HER to walk right up to her WITH A MOTHERFUCKING SWORD at his hip. It's like they shoved the idiot ball up everyone's ass at that point.
>>
Orphen is one of the only shows I'll ever recommend watching the dub over the sub

The characters' voices are all charming in their own ways and the script adds a lot of humor that's appropriate for the tone of the series.

And the dub script is LITERALLY the only redeeming feature about second season.
>>
>>146860945
I found the plot boring, the characters mostly either annoying, useless loads, or both, it had no sense of fun or adventure, and the animation and action mostly mediocre.

But some people like it a lot so I think it's worth checking to see for yourself.
>>
>>146860945
>>146860993

Didn't see your post when I was making that one but there you go

I highly recommend it. Good mix between humor and serious fantasy, characters are all a lot of fun. Do NOT watch second season unless you hate yourself.

Twelve Kingdoms is fantastic, more people need to watch it. Yoko starts as an annoying wimp and develops into a fantastic protagonist.
>>
>>146861052

Good god yes it's trash of the highest order

Their animation budget must have been three bucks and a stale taco, all the character designs change for the worse, they introduce a new main character who's annoying as fuck and lacks any of the charm of the others, and they fill it the fuck up with stock footage
>>

What is the thing about her face they are talking about though?
They mention it several times in ep 2 (that her face changed) and even show the scene with the mirror but I can't tell the difference at all.

I couldn't really get into L-Gaim either and I liked Dunbine a lot. It doesn't hurt to try.

I think the plot picks up somewhere around the ten episode arc, because the plots of the first part are a bit repetitive. After that the plot becomes more interesting.

>>
>>146860807
That was actually some great characterization, one thing that stands out to me about Twelve Kingdoms is how grounded and relatable the character flaws often were, particularly for the female characters. Apparently the writer had young fans writing to her about their problems and took inspiration, it really shows. Wanting to be the center of the universe and hating it when you aren't, being too much of a people pleaser because you're scared of being disliked, being self pitying and thinking your life is the worst, being spoiled and shallow, or jealous of other women, etc, it's all incredibly realistic for a teenage girl. And it blended seamlessly with the fantasy elements, it was really well done.

It's my personal favorite Tomino show, although that's not to say it doesn't have the usual Tomino problems like lackadaisical pacing marked with sudden rapid plot development. Conceptually it's very strong, especially the way it blends real and super robot elements, and halfway through the show there's a great twist on the isekai premise.

Eiyuu Gaiden Mozaika is also a cool short science-fantasy OVA if you like Takahashi's work.

I had the same problem with L-Gaim, after the first arc I totally lost interest. It doesn't help that L-Gaim has major quality issues even for its time. At the very least I would say that Dunbine consistently looks better.

It looks nice, but I found the characters and adventure to be rather bland. It also has a fairly typical quasi-harem light novel thing going on, which isn't terrible but if that's the way we're going I'd prefer Rune Soldier, Those Who Hunt Elves, or even the more modern Legend of the Legendary Heroes.

Seriously though what harem are you talking about

There are like two regular female characters and Azilee doesn't give a fuck about Orphen
