Those aren't worse than Action Cards. They were always apart of the character's deck. Yuma's Double-Up Chance strategy was something HE came up with without anyone else's help. It was great that he kept it around. NEX was a half baked idea that died. Angel Baton was spammed but the only problem with it was that Yusei was the only one who regularly used it.

Action Cards are not part of anyone's deck, require no strategy to use, almost always get them out of whatever situation they're in, can be grabbed at anytime, allow characters to dodge attacks while they hunt for one which means you can theoretically never take an attack as long as you dodge so your opponent's skills don't mean shit etc. Action Cards are garbage.

No? The whole point of the cafe is to celebrate the 20th anniversary which includes all 5 series. Just like DSOD is a celebration of the 20th anniversary too. So just out of curiosity to see what this show had become, I watched episode 120 or Arc-V, and I actually enjoyed what I saw.

How typical is that episode in the way of the ratio between dueling and non-dueling?

I dislike how a duel is chopped up a lot of the time by jumping between several plot lines. This was pretty focused on the one duel happening.

If this show is always like this I might just have to start watching it.

It's been years since I started watching this show, but duels are very rarely cut, and are always given full focus once they break out.

The usual structure is that character stuffs happen to advance the plot in the first half, the show is largely a mystery after all, and a duel breaks up by the second. The duel is either won by the end of the episode, or one player gains advantage for you to "tune in next week" for the ending.

I mostly liked this show for the relationships, so the duel/nonduel ratio wasn't on my mind t b h

Triamid Fortress makes it so your Triamids don't die to card effects. People don't read the cards and try to raigeki the board then you swap to fortress and nothing happens.

Then there's Sphinx who's the boss monster for the archtype (http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Triamid_Sphinx) I don't think it's a 'good' deck but it's okay.

I was OK with Action cards when they allowed plot armor to be enforced without bullshit cards. Lately though, the bullshit still gets made and makes the duels worse.
Why on earth are cards like these even getting written when Action Cards, an established system, could do the job more simply?

Oh really? How come he didn't even know the difference between attack and defense mode despite playing all the time? Or setting a trap and actually saying out loud that it's a trap card? All of his monsters can use Double Up Chance. It's meant to be used when your opponent negates your attack. Yuma uses it the opposite way and negates his own attacks. In his duel with Shark Yuma was attack raise happy with Wonder Wand and that card he used on GoGoGo Golem. Yuma having a card that lets him attack even if his attack is negated is in character. He loves attacking and refuses to use Defense Mode. Most of his stupidity is supposed to be for kids to get into the game. It's why the first two episodes have them explain everything to each other despite all of them knowing how to duel. They even explain Advance Summoning because they were aiming at first timers with Zexal. GX and 5Ds were aimed at people who were already familiar with the franchise.

I get the point behind it, but I don't agree with the way it was shown. It's just too jarring for me to think that someone who has been playing for a while doesn't understand the most fundamental mechanics and can think up something like that. Arc-V did a much better job explaining how to play the game and making it believable (with the exception of the pendulum asspull) with its duel schools and someone like Tatsuya (a complete beginner learning how to play) is how Yuma should've been. Instead the beginning of Zexal makes Yuma look even worse than he should. None of the other protagonists ever showed THAT much incompetence so yeah it's kind of hard to accept it.

Well it's not completely outlandish as he had the card in his hand and Hope on his field so someone decently competent could eventually figure out the synergy there. Of course, it looks bad given how Yuma's character was shown to duel. All they had to do was give Yuma an inner monologue of him contemplating over what to do with his DUC card and the fact that he had Hope who had the power to negate attacks and make him put two and two together. That's why I can't buy anyone saying he came up with that combo of his own skill because it doesn't match up. Yeah all the other protagonists draw situational cards too but they have shown prior competence so it doesn't look as bad when they start doing their combos and whatnot.
