That being said I agree, the story concluded with the main romance wrapped up, with it clearly and at least somewhat seriously hinted at the entire way. Family die, friends die, enemies die, all for the sake of character/plot development, and the deaths are treated with appropriate gravity.

I feel like mashima just saw all the other big long-run major shounen dragging themselves out and not taking things too seriously and took it to the Nth degree.

Bleach hit a peak and did the shonen formula better than anyone else during the Soul Society arc. It only slowly went to shit until the Fake Karakura Town arc.

Still it had god tier character designs and some pretty cool fights until the end. Also they did kill a few good guys which is a bit better than Fairy Tail 0 casualties.

The ending tho. I don't think Fairy Tail will have a worse ending than Bleach. In fact it will probably have a decent ending fitting it's garbage storyline.
