How long does it take to learn Japanese until you can watch anime without subtitles?
>>
>>146719231
Depends what kind of anime

SoL maybe like half a year to a year depending on how much time you spend studying

Anything more plot heavy would be like double that time or so
>>
>>146719231
Yes how long does it take skipping reading altogether?
>>
>>146719231
people here will tell you anywhere from 2 months to 5 years
im at 9 months and i can watch SoL and miss a few words here or there but even what i do get i dont trust very much

currently trying to watch hidamari sketch honeycomb with kisenekko subs, agth hooked and grabbing unknown grammar and words but i don't know if its helping

It requires a lot of time and dedication, if you're not so sure right off the bat then it's unlikely you'd be able to follow all the way through, unless you got really hooked once you started

Do you not play many VNs by any chance?

I'm over a year in and my listening comprehension is pretty bad, and I've always linked it to the fact that I spent pretty much the entire 1+ year reading manga and LNs, as opposed to VNs like most people on here seem to

Listen here punk, you have a choice. Do the work, or don't. Laziness and procrastination are completely irrelevant. You CHOOSE. You choose to do the work, or you choose not to. If you choose not to, you're done, get out of here. If you choose to do the work, then a schedule will keep you in the flow.

Motivation is a crutch and a temporary high. If you depend on motivation in order to do something then you will never accomplish any significant long-term goal. Willpower, a good work ethic, and developing a routine of studying/working towards your goal is what yields results. Needing to feel constantly motivated will work in the beginning, but that's about it.

I mean the text itself is normally sized if you actually opened the image

If you're on a high DPI display you should obviously zoom in the image like anyone that's not retarded would realize

The fact that the text is red-on-cyan is the only thing that would make the image hard to read even after making the text large enough to read

If you want to burn out, sure. You'd probably never recover from this training regimen, you'd likely never learn another language as long as you live. It's just like with exercising, you need time to rest. With learning you need time to absorb new information and store it in long term memory, and that usually includes a good night's sleep.

Reading interesting books is the best way.
VN's are a close second (they have slightly less text than a book).
Reading will improve your vocabulary, grammar, and listening comprehension

In order to understand spoken language, you need to understand grammar and you need to have a decent vocabulary. Both of which reading will improve at a much greater rate than listening. Of course, once you're past a certain point your reward/effort spent will skew more towards listening practice.

Improving one skill very often has beneficial effects on other skills that seem almost completely unrelated.

In the example given, it's not THAT unrelated, as becoming more familiar with the language's words and flow in general can help your ear follow along in a conversation.

In general, the four skills of reading, listening, writing, and speaking ought to be viewed in that order, because each one feeds the next. You can’t say what you don’t know, and reading is much easier to learn words from than listening. The large quantity of exposure helps the learner to think in the target language, which in turn improves output abilities.

Many VNs have more text than books. They are text the whole time unless it's a gameplay one, so it's not like the text is more spaced out either.

Also, with VNs, unlike books, you will actually be training listening comprehension when there are voiced lines.

>>146734148
> and reading is much easier to learn words from than listening

Not really. The level of vocabulary is, on average, higher, but the words are more memorable from listening. If your only goal was to be able to speak, and not to read, you would be best off only reading until you are comfortable with grammar.

Perhaps try reading material in which you know most of the vocab in already, thus letting you focus more on the grammar? Something like 75%+ vocab is already known, so it feels easier.

It could be combing easier manga or even 絵本 depending on your level? Only you can tell what is easy for yourself or not, after all.
>>
>>146734498
>you would be best off only reading until you are comfortable with grammar.
By this I mean, you would only be best off focusing on reading until you are comfortable with grammar, at which point focusing purely on listening would be better.
>>
>>146734498
I guess it depends on how comfortable you are with kanji? For me, two homonyms are much easier to remember if I know which kanji they're made up of.

You know the kanji either way because you stick the word into anki. It's just easier to remember the context line if it was spoken compared to a random long narration sentence.

And yeah of course you forget the context after a few months no matter what but at that point it's already in your long term memory.

I really didn't think I was gonna learn this language. Even when I haven't taken a class in a few months, this stuff is still clicking in my head just a bit. Depends on how basic, and how many corners you're willing to cut. You can read Yotsuba competently in 3 months. If you're willing to pretend, you can "read" any VN after a month or two.

By 2 years, you should really have read over a dozen easy to moderate VNs already.

I'm just going to repeat the golden words. Learn words, not kanji. If you have close to 0 vocab, then do something like Anon5k just to get you started. The sooner you drop that and start mining, the better though.
Maybe go over a grammar guide like Tae Kim's.
And read, read and read. Being an anki drone is a good road to not being fluent.

You look at the word and remember its reading and meaning. If you can't remember you make up a mnemonic, write it down, or suspend the card and learn it through reading. Poof, learning.

All you need to do is learn the radicals and you can write almost any kanji immediately after seeing it. It's not that hard.
My rep process generally goes:
1. Look at the word until the instant I recognise it, then immediately look away
2. Write down the reading in hiragana. Press space and without looking up just listen to the audio to confirm it's correct
3. Still not looking up, write the kanji. Most of the details should be gone from short term memory by now.
4. Recall the english translation, then at last look at the screen to check it was all correct.
>>
>>146749239

You've now experienced what it's like to actually use Japanese.

Studying Japanese from a textbook and actually "using" Japanese are two completely different beasts. It's the same thing as people here who get over 800 on their TOEIC test but can't even carry on a simple conversation in English.

Learning from a textbook should only be supplementary to actually utilizing Japanese in a natural environment. You'd be much better off finding an online friend who speaks Japanese and somehow convincing him to talk to you. The best way is to just move to Japan, obviously.

Stop being a baby? This is going to sound harsh, but you just have to stop being a little baby about it and do it. You either do things or don't do things. Trying hard feels good and is commendable, but you still didn't do it. So, keep trying until you do it.

Nobody starts out perfect. No artist produces masterpieces as their first works. Nobody speaks fluently when they're first learning a language. True masters of a craft are willing to accept the shame of failure and work past it. It stings and wounds your pride, but the only thing you can do is accept that and press onwards.

The only reason I married my Japanese wife is because I took the time to talk to some random guy at a hobby shop. We were looking at the same type of goods, so I tried to talk to him with my so-so Japanese. We got to know each other, and he introduced me to the girl that I ended up marrying.

Just suck it up and do it.

How many people here actually made it? How many people made it that started with DJT?

How would you define "making it"?
>>

why the high amount of retweets, though?

i've never seen that in other countries.

Hadn't heard of this. But it's like you read my mind. Thanks.

I feel like no matter how hard I study I'm forgetting shit faster than I'm learning new shit.

Why is Japanese so based?
>>
>>146754927
How is that based? Are you a masochist?
>>
>>146754978
No, a pessimist. If Japanese is based I'll never have it.
>>
>>146754505
You can watch anime without the subs and understand like 95% of what it says or you did the 4 years.
>>
>>146754927
you aren't writing enough.

>>
>>146754927
Sometimes you just have to step back and come back at things with a new perspective. I didn't make it the first time around and only lasted a week then stopped for a month. I realized how flawed my studying was so I worked and thought about improving it now I have came back with a brand new perspective even if I fail now. I will just keep coming back at it till I find something that works.

What is so good about this that I should download an Anki extension and check it out?

Or can you at least provide a link so I can find this information myself? Googling and looking through the site provides very little in way of helpful information.
>>
>>146754771
Why can't we get success stories on the DJT website. It would be nice to see how many people made it with DJT.

I can do this.

But can you do it with something like Ghost in the Shell: SAC?

何!?
>>
>>146755588
Haven't seen it, but my guess would be no. On the other hand, if I can understand 98% of 98% of anime that still averages out to 95%.
>>
>>146755780
You didn't say you did the 4 years though. Are you almost there?
>>
>>146755412
Once you understand anime, it becomes less interesting.

I'm not joking.

No, it's been about 2 years.
Measuring in terms of years is irrelevant though, someone who reads 5 hours a day is going to learn 5 times as fast as someone who reads 1 hour a day.

I came across the word 万年コタツ in my reading. Is this something only Japs know/cultural thing? I can't find anything on it in English.

That's a lot anon. Do you have a mental disability that allows you to do that without burning out or did you just have breaks in between.

No I just really really love VNs and so I spend all my spare time reading them.

That doesn't make any sense. I'm not saying it makes it more interesting at least not a whole lot but why would it do that? I just thought it would just make it more convenient
>>

I think I got lucky moreso than anything though

It loses some of the mystery. And learning a foreign language to a fluent level is usually a big enough investment that people use that skill towards something higher than children's cartoons.

I'm not saying it applies to everyone, but I've heard the complaint enough that it's definitely a possible outcome for quite a few learners.

I have a question about Anki

I am currently on step 03 of 10 of the Core2K. I sometimes can remember what a sentence means in English because I pick up some words and just remember the rest. I think I wouldn't understand all words in isolation. What about this? I feel like I'm cheating or something.
>>
>>146757471
what's this about steps?
>>
>>146757522
Anki Core 2K can be found divided into 10 steps

It's nice because they are approximate difficulty order.

The Core decks used by almost everyone else in this thread do not have sentences on the front.

I didn't start feeling comfortable with sentences until around 3k words in. By that point, I had enough of a foundation that I could mostly understand new sentences, and could finally understand past sentences - which thankfully I saw again thanks to the repeating flashcard nature of the app.

So what I'm saying is, don't worry. Learn words in isolation, understand how they're used grammatically if you can, but it'll fall into place later. Do listen to the sentences though, and try to shadow them if only because it'll help your recall/pronunciation later on down the line.

>>146758591
OK, it makes a lot of sense. Thank you very much, really.
