In a case like this would it be better to artifect the text so it matches the rest of scan?
Assuming it remains clearly legible.

Can someone help me in getting brush settings for a handwriting?

I want to improve my editing of h-mangos and I'd like to make the moans/yells like the FAKKU books' ones, but I can't get the proper settings or I just suck at handwriting.

I'm using regular form brush, 45°, 50% roundness, 50% hardness, 1% spacing.
Shape dynamics control set to pen pressure, 0% minimum diameter, and Transfer control set to pen pressure, 50% minimum.

It looks kinda almost fine, but it's rough and I think I'll have to blur the layer after, but I'd like to get the size of the stroke to be sorta controlled by the pen pressure so the edges look smoother, but I don't know how.

In the pic, you can see that #1, #2, #3, #4 has very different thickness from what I can guess it's based on pen pressure, since it's not a single angle.
#5 is what I can do for now.

Anyway if you can, please share any tips on how to get it, besides improving on my handwritting/aligning.

I haven't checked it, probably not, but since there seems to be a infected font pack I just wanted to remind everyone to run a scan.
>>
>>146640406
That was my fault. I assumed nexusfont wouldn't do anything to my system fonts if I used a separate folder as the install directory. Chrome beta doesn't crash with too many fonts but After Effects doesn't like one of the fonts that's in the pack. So I need to search through the 905 fonts and figure out which one is doing it.

How mad do people get if someone does a TL release of something (hentai) that doesn't feature perfect translations? I've done a couple releases in the past which were moderately popular on panda but stopped because I felt guilty that I was probably making mistakes in the TL (still learning moon. Maybe N3 level.)

Should I just say fuck it and start again with shit no one else is doing?
>>
>>146640800
The only way to know for sure is running a check yourself.
>>
>>146640805
Can't you ask someone to proofread your translation?
As long as you actually try to translate what's said and ask for help when you don't understand a phrase you should be mostly okay. At least it would be better than something that has been retranslated across five different languages, or the releses where the group just bullshits the dialogue, because nobody is going to notice anyway.

>>146640676
Ah, so that's how they get them looking like that.
>>
>>146640805
If you were good enough to not have some mad autist correct you in the comments, then you're probably good enough to continue.
>>
>>146640805
Talking from experience: No one cares.

If the english part is well written, doesn't have any blatant grammar issues, and the dialogue MAKES sense (not conflicting with the scene, knowledge or another dialogue), practically no one will ever care or find out.

If you commit any of the above, then you might prompt someone to actually check your translation, else it's very, very rare for it to happen.

And that is because people who can translate well enough probably won't read your translation, they read the raws.

That said, if you think you can provide good translations and WANT to, by all means, do it.
You can always google expressions you're unsure about, or ask anywhere and people will help you.
If you think you're making a lot of mistakes, then take some time and learn moon enough, it shouldn't take long.

I've got about 5 months of experience with moon, been translating for 4, and the number of mistakes I make have been reducing drastically since then.
I've had to ask a lot though, but everything was really useful and while my english isn't perfect, I had to actually ask others to TL check for me since no one else ever did even months after I released them.
>>
>>146641116
My writing skills are pretty good in my opinion. Certainly better than a lot of shit I see in some translations.

>>146641115

I always use strong.
>>
>>146641420
Just say you're busy.
>>146641756
It affects how the font comes out when it's small. I always find crisp to be easier to read while smooth is 50 shades of blurry. And sharp is, well, pixelly and hard to read.

Photoshop is awful at rendering small fonts.
>>
>>146641296
>If the english part is well written, doesn't have any blatant grammar issues, and the dialogue MAKES sense (not conflicting with the scene, knowledge or another dialogue), practically no one will ever care or find out.
It is sad how true this is. one of the more recent cases being https://exhentai.org/g/963399/a38c446f3c/ where the translation is just wrong as multiple people have pointed out.
It sadly comes down to if it sounds plausible no one will call you out on it.
>>
>>146641498
Crisp > Smooth > Strong > Sharp.
Though it can depend on the font size and style.

Or do they use cookies/your IP to still track you? Is there a way to get around their checks if they have them?

I ask because I already have trouble keeping my ratio up on AB just due to my shit internet and not being able to leave my computer on to seed for long periods of time, I really can't keep it up on not one but two trackers.

While you can do stuff like that with fonts it takes quite a bit of time warping them. Especially #1. I just really like the way that looks and I'd like to think I have pretty decent handwriting. But as I just learned about it being possible when that anon brought it up I know next to nothing about it.

It took me a while to get used and a driver update to draw not-as-shaky lines. Anyway hand lettering on a tablet doesn't seem exactly trivial (I don't even write that much lately on paper)... guess a movement smoothing utility like "lazy nezumi", or the one that comes built-in on FireAlpaca would help (photoshop's smoothing is kind of ineffectual IMO)? I guess I'd also set a normal type layer as a very rough guide for fitting the text in the balloon.

I mostly use a cheap tablet (genius easypen) for some redrawing, cloning and touching up sfx. The one time I edited an h-doujinshi the amount of "ahn"s and related sounds was way more annoying than any firefight from action manga I'd done so far, haha.
>>

How exactly would a tablet help with cloning or sfx?
A lot of the stuff I edit is for porn, and usually moans are almost all hand drawn. While a handwritten font would work for normal moans, wacky spread across whole bubble like pic related. You can spend time doing individual letter sizing and warping but it seems like it would just be so much simpler to draw what you want.

>How exactly would a tablet help with cloning or sfx?
I find the "Tablet pressure controls (brush/eraser/clone stamp's) size" tickbox real convenient since I don't need to constantly adjust the brush size or to delete excess cloned areas. It's also quicker to line up cloned screen tones since the movement feels more accurate than the mouse's.
Some SFX have stuff like irregular stroked outlines and stuff I can't quite replicate with layer styles. It also makes manually distressing text less of a drag.

And it was cheaper that, say, an xbone gamepad (...I originally impulse bought the tablet because I was a few hundred pesos short of free shipping while buying other computer shit) so I cant complain, haha.

Might buy a better one when/if it breaks though.

Good stuff, though one of the problems with canvas dumping is that it doesn't get rid of the watermarks if added at the JS level, someone posted examples a few months ago and a lot of sites added them. EBJ still doesn't, I think.
>>
>>146673092
Yup, you're right. As of right now I think EBJ only adds a watermark at the very last page for paid books, but that's a generic page they add for all books, so I just skip it. But for all I know they could also use some other hard to detect ones or just change it to watermark other pages sometime later, so it's still a potential issue.

One idea I had in mind was to also set up a proxy with the script and have PhantomJS run through it, then make the proxy run regex replaces on JS files and basically NOP out the parts responsible for watermarking. Obviously that requires some reverse engineering of the JS and beats some of the purpose of using a canvas dumping approach, but still way easier than reversing crypto stuff. I have yet to try this approach on any other site than EBJ though, so I don't know how good of a solution it is.
>>
>>146672625
Yes, specifically a oneshot that's an adaptation of something.
>>
>>146672625

読み切り and any variation is a oneshot.
>>
>>146673790
A simple solution would be only allowing specific operations to be performed on canvas objects and canvas context objects, for example drawImage and such - basically anything that doesn't modify individual pixels or draws transparent images. Unless the watermarks aren't drawn in the canvas itself but somewhere else.

I guess I am. Trying to get this working in Windows but it's throwing these errors. The only one I understand is phantomjs not being in PATH, but it is, so I don't know why that is there.
>>
>>146689006
You need to add the path where phantomjs.exe is to your PATH environment variable.

For instance, if it's in C:\somefolder\phantomjs, you can type in the following into cmd:
set PATH=%PATH%;C:\somefolder\phantomjs

Alternatively, you can go into system settings and add it to PATH that way (Google: windows set path variable) and have it there permanently instead of having to do it for every cmd window you open.

>>
>>146690755
The PATH thing should be fixed. That error means the reader never fully loaded. It's hard to tell why, but in the same folder you used the script from, you should have an image called exception_state.png that is a screenshot of how the web page looked like when it failed. Post it here if you don't mind.

I actually had it happen to me earlier, and it turned out to be an issue caused by EBJ not allowing me to open books due to me logging on EBJ using another IP than the one I was ripping from. Not sure if it applies to you, but if you're also logging on the same account from multiple IPs, that could be the issue. In any case, I'll work on adding a way to detect that right now.
>>
>>146691427
No, it's not different IPs.

The exception_state.png is the background image you see when the web reader is first loading, just a gray texture.

I was starting to think it was an issue with having Python installed in the Program Files (x86) folder, which I recall hearing about in the past. I've never had problems with programs installed there though, so I don't know.

Gotcha. Your installation is fine, that's an error either due to some EBJ behavior I haven't ran into yet or just an oversight on my side. I'm pretty sure the reader is actually showing an error using a javascript alert, but they don't show up in the screenshot unfortunately, so I'll add a way to catch those alerts right now in order to figure out what error EBJ is throwing.

That's kind of what I mean. I'm fine with some adapting cause I know literal japanese is just weird in englsh but a lot of people like taking it to far and saying something different entirely. It's not a TL's job to make a character, just to say what they're saying. For reference look up anything mairen does. Glad to see it's as contentious as I thought it'd be.

While we're at it, how should I translate
>えいっ (smothers protagonist with breasts)
or
>えっ (next panel) ええーっ!?
and other such vocalizations? I'm thinking direct transliteration should be fine with "ehhhh!?", but I'm less sure about the other one. Probably the same, but I figured I'd ask.

also, this author sure likes his sokuons
>>
>>146698495
Hmm that's complicated to discuss... I'm kinda okay, kinda not with something like that.

The general sentence meaning is still intact, but it sure does give a complete different "personality" to them.
It's hard to say if it's good or not, because if you think about it, some "proper writing" in english wouldn't be like the script, but more like the heavy adaptation.

Although I'm not very experienced, translated about 30 chapters (h) so far, I noticed most dialogue are bland are repetitive, the nuance in the dialogue is completely different from english, so giving some life to the sentences is perfectly fine.
The point falls in how much is too much, I think.

For example, any sentence ending with ~と思う might be closely translated as "I think~", but that's so heavily used in japanese and the usage might not even correspond to a natural "I think~" phrase in english, so I think it's totally fine to change it to "In my mind~"; "I guess~", "I'd say~", etc

Also, this is not because I'm not english native, but even to natives, when they aren't creative enough to come up with good sentences like that, that's when the proofreader comes and changes it to something better.

~だと思う。
[At least] that's what I think.
>>
>>146700079
But that's just the original work being repetitive. It's not like Japanese doesn't have varying ways of saying the same thing.

That's why I don't support changing things up just for the sake of variety. If the original is repetitive, so should the translation be.
>>
>>146699944
>えいっ
Heya!; Ei! or variants
>えっ (next panel) ええーっ!?
Huu... ...uuuuh!?

I used to think it was fine "ehhh" and such, but after doing some h-chapters I started to rethink that because of moans.
To the regular /a/non he'll know what that "eehhh" sounds like and what it means, but to someone new, he'll be like "huh?" (pun intended).
It's kinda like when they say some SFX aloud, do you leave those as DOKAN or translate it to KABOOM?
>>
>>146680786
>"This time I'll remake myself!"
Do people really say that? Personally I find it much more natural to simply say
>It's middle school, time for a new me / makeover!

>>146699944
>えいっ (smothers protagonist with breasts)
I think it depends on the context. Smothering in a trying to comfort manner, maybe something like 'There, there!'. A more playful manner, something like Take this!, There!, Have at you!

>えっ (next panel) ええーっ!?
Whaaat?!
And again, depending on context of the reaction, No Waaay?!, For Real?!

Or just keep it as Eeh and defend your TL by saying you're Canadian.

Yeah, you can probably do better, now that I think about it. like "reinvent myself" I also left out the "middle school" in that line because it's already been mentioned in the previous panels

>>
>>146700493
I 100% agree with this. As mentioned as a translator you are there to translate, not to make a character have a personality. I hate it when people do this.
Again I'm not against changing something to facilitate it sounding normal in english like the middle school debut > first day of middle school. If you wanted to get creative "First day of my new middle school life" But that's about the limit. Remake myself while slightly implied with a new beginning like debut in japanese implies isn't what's being said.

This whole discussion gives me a lot to think about. Thanks.

If I choose to translate and fully-typeset some more 'important' sfx (like "ムッ" in >>146643487), is it weird if I don't do the same for most (like "ギシッ" on the same page)? It's completely coincidental that these less important ones would be more difficult to edit, I swear

Also, how should I approach the "Sunoha-" nameplate in the first panel of that page? A little "Nameplate: Sunoha[ra]" outside the panel? Or nothing at all?

These are my last questions today I promise.
>>
>>146705289
You can just have the English text be cut off by the panel border like the Japanese is.
>>
>>146705289
>fully-typeset some more 'important' sfx
You don't need to redraw the sfx. I personally prefer then being notated but asking for redrawing is just crazy. Can just stick it under or around it, of there is blank panel space between them. I'd probably do a likely vertical Sunoha cause I'm lazy about redraws just like the raw is.
>>
>>146704310
Thanks for doing that series, it has me in stitches every fucking chapter
>>
>>146705527
Anytime man! This chapter's a fucking bitch because Cakey is drunk and speaking in a weird accent at the same time. Some of these lines aren't done as well, so don't be surprised if they sound shit.
>>
>>146706306
I'm looking forward to it.

>>
>>146705364
>>146705471
Oh, you mean beside it? Alright, if I can get it to look natural for vertical text. Or perhaps rotated clockwise 90 degrees.

>I personally prefer then being notated but asking for redrawing is just crazy. Can just stick it under or around it, or there is blank panel space between them.
Well, yeah, but for some of them (a single color, in front of a background that's a single color or a single easily replicable texture) it's a relatively simple matter, and I'm good at autistic detailwork like this so it would bother me not to. I'm just worried that if I do replace some sfx completely, it would make not replacing other sfx look odd and inconsistent. I'm probably the only one who would notice such unimportant details though

My group redraws and typesets all sfx. It's sad for the editors and typesetters, but shit man, it can look really good at times.
>>
>>146706542
I would suggest to write it besides the original.
It's way less work, and it's way easier than match the original image, despite the goodwill of some groups sometimes (most of the times) it just... doesn't fit well, unless the typesetter has an artistic sense as good as the original artist.

If you're curious to how it would look, check any FAKKU book, they leave the SFX as it is and makes it looks great.
Their editing work in general is really noteworthy too and a great reference.
>>
>>146706542
Honestly if you're going to do it for one, you should do it for all. That's why I really suggest just making a notation to the side. admittedly
>>146706679
does look the best, but it's also a huge timesink. It's up to you the level of investment you want to spend in it. 90% of people wont notice it but will be fine with the sfx just off to the side. Hell, who am I kidding most wont even care about the sfx. Please don't just ignore them though it makes me sad when people do this.
>>
>>146706679
I actually don't like this sort of thing. Big sfx like those are something the author put work into and completely erasing them bothers me.
>>
>>146706880

I am learning to typeset but can't translate. I would like to work on Plastic Memories if someone is willing to translate.

From what I can find, no one has translated it, and it's already ended. The manga is adapted from the anime and focuses on Michiru who was a supporting character before.

Sen manga raw has it, but the chapter numbering confuses me. There's chapter 1, then 5 through 17, and then 20. I imagine there's a reason for the numbering and I'm too new to know it, rather than there being missing scans.

EBJ also has two volumes, which are chapters 1 and 5 on Sen, with a third scheduled for the end of the month.

Pic is first page of chapter 1.
>>
>>146711756
If it's just an advertisement commentary delete and don't translate it. If the artist didn't put it there, you shouldn't either.
>>
>>146712689
ah, so I'm still redrawing it huh
Well to be honest I'm not against it, this one looks kind of fun like a puzzle, rather than just tedious like most. If I can't make it look natural though I'll just leave it.
>>
>>146706679

Seeking a redrawer for Kokkoku. It's a pretty solid seinen set in a time freeze. About 3 pages per chapter need redrawing. Not very hard. Perfection is not the focus.
5 volumes have translated scripts already.
