Because his character is just a tool created for Oreki's convenience.

Also the whole "I'm a database but I can't analyze it!" shtick is even worse and even more unrealistic.

Have you ever read any mistery novel?
>>
>>146514947
>Because it's a mystery series.
Have you ever read a mystery novel? Holmes for example is knowledgeable in a huge number of topics from biology to chemistry and anatomy. In fact, if you were to combine all main characters in Hyouka you'd pretty much end up with a proto-Holmes character, but having such a skillful and knowledgeable teenager character would be unrealistic, wouldn't it?
>>
>>146514841
That aspect about Satoshi's character was mainly introduced to show how Satoshi and Oreki depend on eachother. Oreki doesn't have the database but can easily break down what he does know. Thus, in order for Oreki to solve issues he needs to be fed the information, something Satoshi has in surplus. Satoshi has the database but cannot investigate further. In order to solve an issue, he needs to use his database as input or Oreki's output. It's a symbiotic relationship which serves as the basis for their relationship. He isn't just a tool, they're both fucking tools and need eachother. Wasn't that one of the core themes of the entire Cultural Festival?

Sherlock holmes books are lazy bottom of the barrel writing that appealed to idiots who would repeatedly eat up the same story over and over again. No better than nancy drew or the hardy boys. The only difference is the demographic.

Now go read some real literature that isn't offensive to anyone with an IQ above 60.
>>
Did Hyouka ever have a storyline? I watched a few eps and it's quite pretty and pretty much just watching for the one girls eyes. Dialogue wasn't too bad.

But with every mystery show ever... it's just banal. So, why did you watch Hyouka may I ask anyone who finished it?

Was it just /comfy/ and /cozy/ at the time like Mushishi? Or was there something genuinely interesting. Characters were good? Because mystery is always kinda lame because genius char just makes some shit up that no one could think of that's unrealistic.
>>
>>146515207
I can smell the asshurt from here.
>>
>>146515221
>So, why did you watch Hyouka may I ask anyone who finished it?
Pseudointellectuals were tricked into thinking it was a masterpiece because of the flashy backgrounds and nice art which could not save any of the characters from being one dimensional cardboard cutouts that could cure even the greatest case of insomnia.
>>
Am I the only one who didn't understood the key item finding event? Oreki somehow found out who the culprit was, but the induction, deduction and what the fuck ever he did with his logic just didn't made sense to me.
I thought about it for like 30 minutes but got nothing
>>
>>146515221
>Did Hyouka ever have a storyline?
It had various storylines told in episodic format but all encapsulated into a main theme of Oreki's subtle character growth through the series. You need to pay more attention my man.
>>
>>146515349
You mean the school festival arc? Yeah that arc was the most confusing. I need to rewatch it but I think the purpose of being so confusing was to make you feel like Satoshi.
>>
>>146515221
The fact that it takes place in a high school makes all the mysteries grounded in reality, and they lay out Oreki's thought process to the point one couldn't argue that it doesn't make sense.

Not to mention it's KyoAni's visual masterpiece, but various scenes from the show speak for themselves for that.

What made it interesting for me, speaking very broadly, was how every arc/story went out of its way to explore more aspects of Oreki and the other characters, letting you in on their perspectives, for it to finally come full circle by the end of the show. That final moment in the last episode still remains one of the greatest things I have ever seen.
>>
If Oreki was the analyzer/Holmes, Chitanda was the motivator, and Satoshi was the database, what was Mayaka? The audience/Watson?
>>
>>146515238

I'm not that into mystery, but like they point out in the anime, there are "rules" that are followed in the mystery genre. Sherlock Holmes doesn't follow these rules, and are sort of out of the game. Agatha Christie is a better example of a mystery writer.

I've never read much mystery, and I didn't even after watching this show. But it seems like a fun genre. Though it seems awfully "locked" if you have to abide by those laws.

Do people really dislike Satoshi as a character? Are they really so retarded that they can't understand his motivations which are said out loud? He's an idiot but he's probably the more human and well written of the cast. Do you people also think that Tomoko from Watamote is a bad character because she fails to communicate and is often hypocritical? It's not like the stories are painting them as good people. Or is it just bait that I bit?

>>
>>146527236
At the start, her Senpai refused to believe that some manga are just plain better than others, which Mayaka refused to believe after reading "A Corpse by the Evening", which according to the story is super good for a school festival doujin.

Then there's the part where her clothes get drenched in dirty water, which was just a club member trying to screw up her drawing which ends up going wrong.

Last one is the whole conversation she has with the bitter senpai who refuses to read "A Corpse by the Evening" so she doesn't have to acknowledge that her best friend who never particularly cared for manga to out of the blue come up with a masterpiece, just like Satoshi getting depressed after trying really hard to catch the thief, only to get outdone by Oreki, who never lifted his ass the whole festival. Mayaka gets sad over this huge gap in skill because she herself compared her own manga to her Senpai's, and thought it was way better than hers.

It's easier to understand if you rewatch to tell the truth, as you can easily forget who is who with the whole festival thing constantly going on.

tl;dr: Mayaka gets angry and sad because her senpai justifies shit taste in manga with
>opinions

Its all coming back to me now, arigato anon, I think I will go back and rewatch. I forgot about the senpai not wanting to admit someone who didn't obsess over manga couldn't possibly write something so good. Actually, the fact that Maya tries to force her to read it makes so much more sense now. I can appreciate her motivations of not letting someone just hide behind "everything is equal in art ;)" Based Maya.

Hyouka isn't a mystery show primarily, and if you want a mystery show, Hyouka will dissapoint you because the mysteries shown and solved are so mundane. It's actually hard to say what it is about, but to me it is about a certain set of people, the Classics Club, who they are and how they evolve. Most importantly it is a show about how life is mundane and getting to love mundanity of life. To me it is completely different from any other anime, because it's the opposite of the usual escapism in anime shows, it is about completely confronting how life is or how it usually is, and finding peace in that. It's the zen meditation of anime, it's concentration and calmness at the same time, and that's why to me it's NOT like Mushishi. Also unlike Mushishi, Hyouka is not episodic, the "plot" revolves around the evolution of the characters

>Though it seems awfully "locked" if you have to abide by those laws
Why have I been seeing so many people on /a/ get hung up on Knox's Rules/Van Dine's rules/etc lately? They've always been treated as a rough set of guidelines, and are more often than not twisted within mystery stories (which is fine provided that there is internal consistency and logic, all thes Rulesets amount to is basically "don't resort to asspulls").

Knox's Rules and the like exist at all only because at the time (early 20th century), the genre was at the peak of popularity and there needed to be some sort of base standard to be followed (and mystery novels were seen as "games" at the time)

>Sherlock Holmes doesn't follow these rules, and are sort of out of the game. Agatha Christie is a better example of a mystery writer.
Christie often deviated from these rules more than Conan Doyle ever did, I think

Hell, Hyouka itself namedrops Van Dine's rules while deviating from one of it's main points, that the crime in question has to be something huge like murder in order to justify and maintain the audience's interest.

Oh man, I can't believe how over your head everything went. They bullied Mayaka because they knew she had a short temper and they wanted to use the catfight to advertise the club and get more people to come. Look at this webm, Smugi is bullying Mayaka and as soon as Mayaka gives in and stands up, the club president runs off with a poster in hand, trying to be subtle and nonchalant.

Some talents more than others, and it eventually disappears if you don't keep cultivating it.

>>146539738
I never took Hyouka as the kind of show that gives the audience a chance to solve the problem.

Most of them, I like Chitanda a lot.

so much of this was boring shit i did not care about

That's an edgy opinion you have there. I'd bet you also love berserk and NGE because those character are so "real"

Most of them always threw a curve ball at the end but they provided pretty much all the info needed for one to solve them by themselves, but they mislead you most of the time which made it harder.

Best KyoAni design that's for sure.

Oh, you're right, that segment went over my head, and it turns out the president was in on it. So it's a plan to get Mayaka to riled up over an
>opinions
debate in order to bring people to bring people to their stall, and turns out the president of the manga club is a cold-hearted bitch.

I'll keep my position that a lot of the suffering also comes from the later segment with the whole talent thing though.

If you're going to pretend you know anything about mystery writing, try reading a mystery novel first.

What do you mean? In general? I like the Agatha Christie novels, I'd recommend starting with "The Mysterious Affair at Styles", then go for either "The ABC Murders" or "Murder on the Orient Express", saving "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" and "And Then There Were None" for last. Enjoy being humiliated by Christie's ruses.

Sherlock Holmes books can feel a bit dated and Christie is still entertaining to this day.

Can we post some more Oreki or Chitanda wallpapers? I have 2 monitors now so I need both.

Also, to contribute the conversation, I'm actually really not looking forward to the live action version. I generally don't think live action actors add anything to the source (well, second-source) material with slice of life shows. It would have to have the care to package Oreki correctly, and maybe just the realization that the show is about his growth and not just is obvious interest in Chitanda. Maybe my opinion of typical Jdramas is overcrowding my expectations. Maybe also because Oreki is such a qt.

The latest short story for the light novels was enjoyable, maybe more so than the drawn out Volume 5, and I'm interested in seeing how Chitanda grows from it. I like that she no longer has a solid plan to go towards.
