After watching this video weeks ago, i have been thinking.
Does character in wuxia works have habit of giving your enemy a drink before fighting to thedeath ?
Phoenix killer did this with Shang few episode ago
and the old man at 4:34 also did this too
https://youtu.be/mIgDFlTO4vM?t=275
>>
>>146285238
Mostly yes in a form of respect while other time its a trap with the drink being poisoned.
>>
>>146284728
You know, if I remember correctly, Vaper did say Shang will be happy to see her again which would mean Shang happy to save her, [spoier] after losing many loved one before the start of the quest[/spoiler]

Did we get official lyrics for the main theme yet?
>>
Form the Chinese spoiler,
it appears that Xuě Ya use this pipe to setup Dān Fěi and let her and Shang get captured and imprisoned. His true identity is a famous& notorious thief that like stealing treasure. He 's still not evil or bad though, more like an anti hero or "bad "good guy .
>>
>>146286931
A thief is not a good guy, unless he steals and gives to the poor.

Anyways, his poem if anyone cares to translate it:

「幽夜匿形不謂隱,明光伏影是迷觀。虛實由來如一紙,誰識幻中吾真顏?」

日本語訳:闇に潜っての画策は忍びの技とは言えぬ、光の中で人の目を惑わせてこそ真の力なり。虚実の境は紙一重、幻惑の裏の我が素顔を誰が見抜けるだろうか?
>>
>>146286591
Wait, did they bully this episode too? Fuck those cunts, the Shofuku bullying must end.
>>
>>146287085
In summary
>Turns out Demon and Archer were fucking up on purpose to see how Shang faired
>Xue Ya cast an illusion to make Dan Fei fight Shang
>Both got imprisoned in Xue Ya's plan to steal both the guard and the handle
>Then everyone mocks Shang for not knowing about any of this because he arrived from a country none of them believe he came from anyhow
>>
>>146284531

>>
>>146288209
Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking too.

It's pretty much a given that Gui Niao stole the real guard from Dan Fei ages ago and substituted a replica. A fact Mie Tian Hai instantly recognized, which is why they're having a polite little feast while discussing what Gui Niao wants in exchange for it. Or at least what he'll claim he wants before he tries to pull another fast one. It's pure Lupin.

What's got me interested is what Shang's really combat style actually is. Knowing he's absolutely not a swordsman sets him up as the opposite to obsessed sword collector Mie Tian Hai. But a blunt weapon? Does that mean he's a staff fighter, or is he secretly a kung fu master with one of those "sealed techniques" oaths?

>>
>>146296797

I think he orginally trained to fight with wooden sword like bokken before he got real sword.
>>
>>146297529
Is he Butcher's self insert?
>>
>>146297589
Wouldn't he be confident in his sword technique if that was the case?

It'd be hilarious if his final form was just to sheathe his sword and beat them with the round stick though.
>>
I really hope that Dan Fei grows a bit more backbone and starts acting like a main character. I'd consider this a given in most stories, but Japan being Japan leaves me with some doubts.
>>
>The noble journey to kill the big bad is essentially just an elaborate heist set up by Kichou

Fucking hell, that's hilarious. Especially considering how the two most heroic characters are at the center of this plot.
>>
>>146297836

Bashing and slashing is quit diffirent. Bashing you just hit hard, while slashing require more finesse.

But it would be interesting when he use his true skill.
>>
>>146297589
I doubt it. With a bokken you're still practicing slashing techniques and sword forms. From the way the characters talked Shang is has basically no idea how to use a sword properly and is getting by on a mix of raw power and clumsily repurposed skills.

Which in its own way is sort of impressive. Using a weapon he's terrible with, he was able to overcome the first two trials and defend against Dan Fei going all out. How badass is he going to be when he pulls out his real combat style? This is a like a not-stupid version of the "I was only fighting at 30% of my real power" trope.
>>
>>146289668
>it's treason then
>>
>>146298602
Hypothesis.
Shang is actually a staff-/stickfighter, or is accustomed to fighting with studded clubs.
He stole the sword from an actual swordsmen he killed, then wandered into the desert to commit suicide by proxy.

Also, his art name apparently translates to Edgless Blade.

>>
>>146298838
I really think there's more to it than that.

I just went back to Ep 1 to double check this. After he chases off the mooks hunting Dan Fei he waves his hand a bit, gathers a bunch of glowing yellow energy, and then transfers it to her to heal her internal injuries. Check it out at 12:15 of the video. That's not just "oh I'm better with a staff than a sword" stuff. That's "oh I'm a secret kung fu master with advanced chi manipulation techniques I'm hiding" stuff.

That's not everything hidden in the first episode. Later on when Shang says he's getting serious against the guy who cuts his own head off, he first throws out a shockwave attack with that same yellow tinged energy, then cuts the guy down while breaking his sword using "Formless Rogue Sword: Eight-Way Arrival". Which I think is the only time Shang's ever used a named technique.

We all forgot about this stuff because Shang's spent most of his time since then clowning around while the other characters get introduced and show off, and because we didn't have a baseline for what level of abilities most characters in the setting have. But if you compare it to what he's done since, he's been very carefully hiding all his best abilities from the group.

I'd given the manga a pass because of the crap character models, but I went and skimmed the first two chapters to see if there's any clues. The healing bit is indeed there, which means it's not a minor detail, as is Sheng winning the fight with Formless Rogue Sword: Eight Way Arrival.

If I parse that right, Formless means he's not using any formal sword stance and Rogue means it's not part of any school. Which really makes me suspect he's adapting something that's properly more like Iron Snake School Fist: Eight Way Arrival. Not that school specifically, but that he's got a very distinctive fighting style that he's sealed away, or at least concealing so he can hide his true identity.

Eh, in wuxia, healing someone with chi is incredibly commonplace. Although granted, it's usually done by someone who's incredibly skilled. It really doesn't mean too much, unless this half of the land doesn't use chi but something else.

>>146309108
I'm sure the whole formless naming scheme is to imply he's using a self-taught style. Wuxia MC are usually those types as it means they are people with a natural talent for martial arts.

If they respect each other and/ or the fight isn't meant to be personal or for vengeance, they're in it for the thrill of the fight, that sort of thing. The Smiling, Proud Wanderer, which is a pretty iconic wuxia work, had a pretty prominent scene about the alcoholic protagonist alternating between fighting the villain and generally being bros and just drinking with the villain.

>Eh, in wuxia, healing someone with chi is incredibly commonplace.

And that's exactly why it's a twist. The show throws it at you early in the first episode and you just shrug because you expect that sort of thing from wuxia. Then the twist is that no, it's an incredibly unusual trick that no one else in the series is capable of, but you forgot all about it because you wrote it off as a typical genre trope.

Or did you also forget that this is an Urobochi show? This is exactly the sort of misdirection he loves.
>>
>>146311336
Have anyone else actually gotten injured to the point they needed healing though? Everyone else are trained martial artists of some sort, they really didn't need someone else to heal their wounds. I mean, they were throwing out touhou levels of dakka here with their chi. I doubt healing with chi is out of their league unless of course, they're not using chi in the first place.

Does anyone have the interview where Urobuchi talked about genre tropes? I only saw it in one of these threads but I recall one point saying that he wanted people to question the cliches and to doubt whether they were being played straight or not.
>>
>>146311224

Answering myself - it's in Ep 6 starting at 7.52. Two places he might be going only seem to be on the Dong Li side of the Wasteland - a sea and the Demon Spine Mountains. If Shang wanted to get to, or even cross, the Demon Spine Mountains then it would explain why he's going along with the group.

There is an anime adaptation of Condor Hero Part 2. Other than that, very few comic books are actually translated in English.
>>

By chuuni I mean the way he acts and talks, stuff like 'you're 100 years too soon to challenge me' or 'who wants to die first? Or you prefer to die together?'
>>
>>146314507
The whole point of chuu2 is that they're trying to ape or imitate these sort of badass/edgy characters. So no, he's not because that's not what chuu2 means. Chuu2 are the people trying to pretend or act like him.

Anyone want to have a go deciphering the OST track titles? For example 5in4 is probably read shina not five in four. GK might stand for the happy shoes, but it seems like an important track.

The first Kill track is Phoenix's theme, the second is Keigai's with him (Kguy almost as clear as coldsnowcrow), but what the fuck do you read them as? Kill don't live killfie?

Well Archer guy is strong but he shows it by showing his mad skills. His fashion sense isn't that exaggerated. His attitude is your usual old guy of the group. He probably threw some cool lines but compared to Screaming Phoenix who 'fights' Shoufukan in the restaurant, Archer can't compare.

My point here is 'exaggerated' and not in a negative sense. He mostly don't talk much but sometimes threw cool lines and shit, usually mocking Ken's naiveness. His fashion sense is like that. He stroke cool poses and he's actually really strong. I really can't describe it better. Maybe anti-hero? Villain? Edgy? Whichever is fine.

It's common enough of an occurrence in wuxia. He's good, he knows he's good and he's proud of that fact. That's it. You're making things more complex than it is.

>His fashion sense isn't that exaggerated
Because fashion choice reflects things like social status and attitude. Archer is meant to be more low key while Assassin is meant to be the sort who live on a bigger budget. His mannerism and clothing reflects that he's of a higher wealth status.
>>
I don't get it, so why is Archer friends with Enigmatic Gale?

>Everyone is left-handed in TBF world.
That's due to the puppets needing the strong right hand to support the weight of the puppet and all of its gearing under the costume. The right hand holds it up and animates various actions. The left hand does the puppet's left hand and legs. Because the right hand is occupied with stabilizing the puppet, the left hand ends up being the one with enough physical degrees of freedom to handle the expressiveness of the puppet. So that's why the left arm and hands of the puppets move so much more than the right.

The reason for Shoufukan crossing the desert has to do with Rinsetsua's master plan, he was just chilling waiting for him to cross by. How did they come to know each other is another mystery.

I won't be surprised if Rinsetsua wants to steal something other than the Tengyouken too.

I kinda feel like people are making too much of a deal out of the qi/chi healing thing.
>>
>>146322145
I think its a valid point.

Whenever he fights he usually always has this white/yellow qi whenever he is fighting.
The only other time is how when he's using it to heal Tanhi.

No one else has shown to have any other kinds of "magic" that heals people, not even tanhi who is a priestess.

Also, when the Demon Lady wants to not let Bones get his hands on the sword, why not take the guard off of tanhi or just steal it from her and run? Or is the rest of the group kind of not letting her do this?

Now knowing more about Vaper/Enigmatic Gale I wonder how everyone else is related to him.

Phoenix hates him; but why?
Demon Lady hates him; but why?
Why does his Master associate with him?
Archer is unclear, but a repeat accomplice/cohort though
Ken is with Archer
>>
>>146322565
They all hate him because he stole one thing or another from them.

What I don't understand is that if he steals all the time, where is his loot?
Betsutengai is a "collector" and his tower if full of stuff but Rinsetsua has only a pipe, that his teacher willingly made for him. Doesn't make sense.
Unless he likes to steal non material things.

Or, it could be that he's the original owner of the tower.
>>
>>146322774
>Or, it could be that he's the original owner of the tower.

People keep proposing this, and I just don't believe it.

Seems like a guy like him, a thief with a more pronounced name that takes care to keep his face hidden, would just not own a huge castle that is hard to get to. If he was the original owner, it seems likely that he would've already had some measure to easily get in, be it the demon birds or something else.

>What I don't understand is that if he steals all the time, where is his loot?

Could be he just wants to steal just for the reputation he receives. He might like the infamy.
>>
So Vapeguy is basically fantasy Kaitou Joker?
>>
>>146322903
It also wouldn't make sense because if all his loot is in the tower, then Keigai and Phoenix killer could just go there and get what's stolen from them.

Most likely, the things that Rin stole from them can't be brought back, otherwise Phoenix killer wouldn't want to outright kill him before getting his stuff back.

Or it could simply be part of the finale. That after all said and done, Shou finally fulfilled his promise of saving someone in place of the stone Buddha in exchange of the umbrella. So Rin gave him an umbrella as a parting gift, as Shou returns to his trail to parts unknown. Then as Shou passes by the broke down temple at the beginning of the story.
