I would say I'm more impressed by the realistic stuff. But it all has its place, lord knows FLCL and Jin Roh would both be shit if you swapped their styles.

You make a good point. In between is like a poor imitation of realistic. I would also add a category which is anime styled for young children. You can tell off the bat that some anime is made for five year olds.

Both can be good, it depends heavily on the show.
FLCL wouldn't work with realist animation, just as GiTS would be shit with something unusual.
Animation and art are fundamentally intertwined with the show.
