For the whole "3D western rpg genre" it is. Gothic was one of these pioneers, shifting it all to 3D making the graphics barely bareable to look at and tried to create some sort of unique fighting system.

They tried and mostly failed. It was rather clunky, slow and not fluent at all. It had some features that were interesting sure but other then that it was still far from "good."

It was a good game for the time but only because there was simply not much better.

It was like the Atari age all over again. Only in 3D.

Angels and Evas have "AT fields" which are extremely powerful barriers that can only be nullified by another AT field. Getting in close quarters combat with the Angel in an Eva nullifies it while bombs/rockets don't.

And the kicker The Evas are actually organic beings that house the souls of the pilots' mothers, and the mother/child bond is what allows them to pilot it. You can't just throw any old shmuck into it.

Seriously if you don't like it after 3 episodes just drop it.

Yes, you should watch it. Regardless of the fact that obviously some people hated it and some people loved it, the fact that it still gets this sheer AMOUNT of discussion 20 years later is evidence that there's something going on there.

In other words, it's importantly culturally, at the very minimum. Watching it is necessary to understanding certain references in current anime the way reading the Bible is necessary to understand a lot of literary and television references in the English language. I'm not saying Eva is quite at the level of foundational text, but it's a goddamn analogy, they don't have to be one-for-one perfect fits.

Also, it's a fun series with good pacing, excellent cinematography, lots of exciting action and characters who are interesting to watch, and not the least bit generic.

Many series with fantastical elements do not explain everything upfront. Sometimes, either for suspense, pacing reasons or for a flourish, they reveal things more slowly, dolling out bits of information over time. Take the X-Files as an example. It's a master (for most of its run, anyway) of slowly showing more and more insight into the supernatural, alien mysteries that permeate its setting.

Evangelion does something similar. However, Evangelion is also a series that expects you to pay attention. They will explain things, but you have to actually let them. They will not be explanations grounded in the rules of they physical world, because the real world doesn't have giant robots or Angels running about. Like pretty much all fantasy and science fiction, this story runs upon its own ruleset, and like most good ones, the ruleset is pretty consistent.

While a lot of its technobabble is just for fun, you're kinda at the level of "what? How'd Captain Kirk disappear from the ship and reappear on the planet's surface like that? That makes no sense! What's all this teleportation nonsense?!" here with your complaints. Just like transporters, the giant mechs and the AT Fields and the children being required to pilot are kind of the major conceits of the series.

They're the damn premise. And yes, things get explained in more detail. "Why are these Angels here?" Answered. "When is this? Why were people expecting them?" Answered. "Why do kids need to pilot them?" Answered... mostly. And the answer is actually a subplot, a certain character searches for answers like this throughout the story.

The biggest problem is, they already explained the AT Field and you ignored it. You have to actually interact with the fantastical elements of the fiction presented to you, you know.

And then comes the biggest problem. The "little Shinji bitch" problem. Gee, a kid who hasn't seen his father in a long time and as shown in the first episode had a bad falling out with him has been summoned (and even has a letter that's all blacked out, just "COME!" scrawled over the blacked out parts) comes to this city, and isn't entirely sure why his dad wants him, but kinda wants to reconcile.

And it's established visually that normal weapons can't touch it. A goddamn nuke just slowed it down a little, and it's walking through populated cities anyway. Yes, obviously the giant robot that literally rips through the monster's big energy field that's plain as day. And the people talk about its AT Field, and in the first episode say explicitly that the Eva is the only thing that can beat the angel, conventional weapons don't work.

What I'm saying is... OP? Sit back, and ENGAGE with the work in front of you. Don't be that guy who complains that warp drives are impossible so how is the Enterprise getting from star system to star system within peoples lifetimes.

When I fist got into anime a few years ago EVA was one of the first things I tried, I dropped it on the first episode. I still stand by that decision, past me was cool, would hang out with.

The only thing one should skip is Death and Rebirth because it's totally pointless unless you want to see those short scenes where the pilots are playing instruments for some reason.

They do have a reason though. It is supposed to be different. I can see why you would think it's not as good as the original series (though I'd refrain from saying that now, since the rebuild isn't over), but I still like what it tried to do. It's weird, but so is the tv series. The main reasons I like it are the setting (which I like better than the original), the way the entire thing feels like and the focus on Kaworu and Shinji, which the tv series kind of lacked. I get that characters other than Shinji aren't explored as much, but they clearly didn't even attempt it, and there's still room for that later if it's needed.

Just marathoned the entire series for the first time. NGE was amazing and the surreal shit makes it really good. Ep. 25 and 26 are happening in the character's minds and is definitely worth watching in order to understand their psychology. I recommend watching it before EoE. EoE was amazing too, though the end is kind of a cliffhanger but not in the sense where you'll be wondering what's next. Rebuild 1.0 is a recap that stays true to the anime, probably the best in the series. 2.0 is where shit changes, I didn't really like it too much but the end of it was great. 3.0 is a complete mess because Anno doesn't know how to make things unless he's depressed. 3.0 just feels completely unfinished and at this point I just wish there were a reset button in the next movie.

Rebuild is definitely a sequel to EoE. Loop theory.
