I don't think it took that long. Toward the end Kyousuke clearly didn't intend to let it end and made that clear by rejecting/kissing after credits/monologues. Kirino tends to force herself into bittersweet decisions until Kyousuke subverts her intentions in some way to put her back on the path she wants. It's all fairly thematically consistent and I wouldn't be surprised if they were actually more romantic after "breaking up" than they were while dating.
