Why? They're both cute, have okay production values, sometimes tackled mature themes, and the main characters in both shows were adorable.

I avoid shojo anime because they're usually romance that doesn't go anywhere until long after the anime ends, I do read a fair amount of them though.

I rewatched Shugo Chara earlier this year. I read Orange in March and it was OK but I don't have any desire to watch the anime.

Doremi is very same-y and very long. The characters are sweethearts but the writing is too childish, I guess. Tutu is oriented around Myuuto who's just straight up not a good character. No one really is, save for Ahiru. I just don't think it's well written. Nice layouts from time to time, but the art shows its age. I dig how loose the character animation is though, especially for Ahiru.

Every character's actions are driven by him. And I'd rather be pretentious than pretend to like something I don't. Plus it's not even that I don't like it, I just don't think it's all that great.

I'm just pulling your leg with the pleb thing, but Mytho drives the story as much as the titular character drives Madoka. There are people who want to protect or harm him, but it's those people who matter to the viewer, and how and why they do it. Mytho is more of a mcguffin than a character for most of the show.

Utena Mokushiroku. I almost never watch shoujo normally.

Not that I think Madoka's all that amazing of a show either, but she's (Madoka) given enough characterization for the viewer to empathize with. Myuuto is a non-character. No personality. That's the point, I know, but forgive me for not being able to relate to any of the characters when everything they do is oriented around him.
I'll compare him to Anthy, because she's in a similar position. Similarly personality-less, again because that's the point of her character. But her character is a lot more compelling because there's a ton of mystery surrounding her. It keeps you going, keeps you interested. I get why Utena wants to save her just as much as I get why others detest her. And as the story goes on, she only gets better. As Myuuto gets his heart back, he goes from blank slate to angsty blank slate to boring slate.

Anthy still figures a lot more prominently than he does, and in her case you feel from the start that there's a personal reason for her to act like that.
Mytho is established as a literal blank slate and you know the cause isn't personal but magical. Also unlike Anthy, who gets her own development, pretty much all his screentime is dedicated to other characters' exposition or growth, not for his own.
You won't hear me say that Utena isn't better written than Tutu, in fact I think I just argued the opposite, but my point is the show never tries to sell him as a character you should care about in his own right. The reasons the other characters care about him always come from themselves, not from him.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't think his lack of characterization hurts the show much. I can't think of what could be gained from it.

Yeah, I agree with all that, but it's also what my problem was. It's tough to empathize with the main cast when I'm not personally invested in the same things they are. Ahiru wants to protect Myuuto. Why, because his eyes are sad? It's all so superficial. I like Ahiru. She's a sweetheart. But I can't help but be disinterested in her motivations. It's not that I think giving him more characterization would've helped, rather, I think the narrative needs restructuring in general.

But I think the superficiality of Ahiru's infatuation with him fit the fairy tale motive well enough while it lasted, and even she questions it eventually. I would see it as an issue if that remained her main drive until the end, but her relationships with Fakir and Rue were endearing enough for me to care from the start and their motivations all evolve as the show progresses.
