They aren't bad because production values, just sheer bad calls on the directors and writers part.

I do not ever understand why people keep saying this about GC. The animation is shallow and only 1 scene out of every 4 episodes has any bit of remarkable stuff. The colors are really hard on the eyes with all the gradient and the shitty filters. As for the music, only like a few songs stick out as catchy, but not remarkable enough to stand out in an ocean full of other anime with more memorable OSTs.

tl;dr: there is NOTHING good about this shitfest.

personally i liked this series. the story was kind of incoherent but but i enjoyed the music and character design. the summoned tools based off of people's desires was a pretty cool gimmick as well. and despite the plot being questionable, i also believed that the characters themselves were individualistic enough to make whatever scenario they were in interesting.

Guilty Crown might be, because the story didn't work as a whole and nobody liked it by the end, but Code Geass is an example of almost the opposite. It showed how a story can have a number of flaws but still work out because of good calls the directors and writers made. Perfect? Nah, but good enough. Which wasn't the case with Guilty Crown. That just left me with a bad feeling.

The way I like to explain is that Code Geass is the first train wreck anime that worked.
So then there was a rush to repeat the formula, without understanding WHY it worked. They copied all the wrong parts.
(And since the imitations failed, Geass doesn't really get to claim credit as a trend setter).

IMO the key was in the characters and interactions.
The failures reached into the big bag of archetypes and pulled out characters who had worked in other kids of shows but can't carry a train wreck.
In Geass, shit was blowing up, but that was because the characters were blowing shit up, for their own reasons.
In the others, shit blowing up was something that was being done to the characters, who didn't really even want to be there.
