It's worth watching the first season if you don't care about cars. For the most part it holds your hand without boiling everything down. You'll be able to understand enough. As long as you watch it subbed and have the Eurobeat up you'll have a very fun time... during the racing, just remember to take it easy during the non-racing portions. Also Itski shouldn't be enough to drop the show, so if you do you're weak shit.

Funny thing is that for the first time i watched Initial D with a friend of mine, he paused every ten minutes to lecture me about how the anime was correct, though it wasn't necessary since the anime already explained it well enough for me

That's a difficult question, because the grindy races already started in 4th Stage. (>M-Muh tire grip ! Gotta save up those tires !!!)

Having some deeper meaning for Project D would've been nice.
I think I would've just preferred Takumi trolling other drivers on their turf and doing crazy gutter-tricks and winning races as opposed to what we actually got.
Though it'd come down to good execution ...

Maybe focus more on Takumi's life after he graduates, that way there's still development and the show doesn't stagnate,
while having the same old goofy races with Takumi destroying everyone left and right, to keep the light-hearted tone.

I thought that 5th stage was going to be good. I mean the 1st episode was pretty hype inducing, but no, Keisuke will never get a GF, and Dagumi will hook up with the new girl. Bam the end. I recommend skipping 5th stage, but at least try Final stage, the race was pretty good IMO
