Everything about the plot progression makes sense if you look at how it develops the romance between the mains. I also mentioned that I found Love Live's character portrayal bad. One of the reasons I want Kyoani to do an idol anime is that they can do characterization much better.
What I meant by that was that I worried that it'd just be another K-on, with no focus on the idol aspects at all.
But thinking a bit more, I found Hibike Euphonium to have a good balance of music and character, so I think they could end up with a good balance here.
It's not that I don't like K-on, I love it, but one of the things about Love Live I liked was the work to become an idol, and if they went the K-on route, that would disappear.

In best case, they'd make a great idol anime with great characterization, similar to Euphonium.
My worry was that they'd make another K-on, where the idol aspects would be removed, like how K-on lacks music, and focus on characters exclusively.

I really like the cgdct genre, but it's not for that I want Kyoani to make an idol anime.

The only inconsistent thing is the ending, they were clearly torn between a bittersweet or a happy finale so they just gave us something ambigious.

I don't know about the other people responding, but I will unironically add that the idol episode is the best. It has a really lighthearted tone, the animation is fantastic with excellent costume design, and I do like the song and the dance routine. Granted, it only really works because we've already been acquainted with the characters in earlier episodes.

I dunno, if it was more like creative anti-monster tactics with more hijinks, it would have been a lot more fun overall than being too heavily mired in tsundere bullshit mixed with quasi dark edgy LN tones.

Maybe, except that the romance progression is really annoying for most of it. Good on him for knowing what he wants and pursuing it, but it was a mostly joyless progression for the audience due to Mirai's often insufferable behavior and mannerisms.
