Why the fuck do people like this shit?
Because it's great you piece of shit.
Why don't you watch it and make your own opinions you retarded faggot
It has like 50 best girls, and tanks. Also spin-offs that are cool as fuck, a great 4-koma series, a damn good movie. It's a miracle of a franchise.
A very large cast of characters with unique personalities and fast-paced tank battling, complete with a fluffy girl sperging out over military hardware stats.
This is basically /ak/'s wet dream, and /ak/ doesn't have many other shows to get wet over.
>girls and fluffy hair
Well if you can't have fun with it because you're too busy complaining about realism in fucking anime then you're beyond saving.
You have your answer though: most people enjoy GuP because the girls are cute and because they're not stupid enough to need to take it seriously.
People were expecting k-on with talking about tanks between tea and cakes.
Instead we got a well executed 'scrappy team wins the tournament' story with a diverse, likeable cast and actually really great tank battles.
Because some people, myself included prefer ridiculous tanks to ridiculous mechs. I've never particularly liked or been interested in mecha anime but I've liked tanks since I was a kid building Airfix models.
The sheer quantity is the selling point here. Even if they're not too deeply fleshed out, there are plenty to choose from. Most shows can't afford to support this many characters, which is a big part of GuP's popularity.
The show has a basic underdog story about proving worth to older sibling. The cast has little to no personality other than stereotypes, and the tank battles drag on like crazy, with a lot of inconsistencies.
Again, "most shows" can't pull off what GuP did, due to how expensive it is to pay all the voice actors in the cast. Shallow characters are fine in this sort of show, considering its essentially a sports drama for people who like tanks more than sports. It's not as if they were producing a psychological thriller. There was no necessity to deeply develop the characters, no serious mental traumas to expose, no need for crazy twists. The show did well by keeping the side characters simple, while giving the main characters their own internal conflicts to develop through.
It has very well animated, splendidly directed tank battles without being hindered by portraying real combat (it's sports anime). Music is great, there is no real story besides the most basic sports stuff and characters are one-dimensional but it doesn't need that anyway.
GuP CG is actually good. It's not trying to be cheap 2D and fully embraces the advantages of 3D by having cameras with lots of motion and pans as well as longer cuts with many tanks in the shot at once.
True, but I wouldn't mind a show with derpy hand-drawn tanks.
But then we wouldn't have all the nice details like the wheel suspensions when they move over rough terrain or such. The tanks are pretty charming by themselves, with Rosehip's Crusader being the absolute cutest, moving back and forth in every scene and drifting full speed past every curve.
Nothing really. Mediocre CGI battles(only slightly better than Berserk2016 CGI mind you), large cast of mostly forgettable characters, a movie that actually boosted it enough for nips to pick it up so it continued for little to no reason other than CGDCT in tanks.
People that got into it in the beginning have Stockholm Syndrome now and can no longer leave because there is nothing else for them to watch that's like it. Extremely generic slice of life+moe anime made for consumption by the masses.
All the girls are pretty great, the OST and sound design is fantastic, tanks in general are cool and the action scenes are also fairly exciting.
The only bad thing is /u/shits bleeding over into the /a/ discussion threads.
Everybody in this thread is either missing or ignoring one of the most important elements of GuP: the absurdist humor.
I don't want to get into a whole thing about metamodernism here, but suffice it to say that GuP combines not taking itself seriously at all with taking itself very seriously in a way that is completely pitch-perfect. All of the characters are very intentionally simple stereotypes, they're all either caricatures or walking gags. Both Hana (delicate feminine) and Saori (motherly feminine) for example are designed solely to juxtapose femininity with tank warfare. Yukari is a self-deprecating caricature of the creators themselves, etc. The girls from the other nation schools are just constructs of assorted stereotypes, in the most blatantly intentional manner. Every character in the show is constructed purely as a gag, but here's the thing: they're also lovingly handled.
The point is that the creators of GuP are very aware of how ridiculous all of this is, and they know how ridiculous they themselves are, but they also love it, and take it very seriously. Take for example the sequence in the first episode where all the girls swoon over the propaganda film about tanks. Nothing sums up the show better. That scene was hilarious in such a highly conceptual way, and it perfectly communicates to the audience that they're supposed to not take this seriously while also taking it seriously.
>somewhere in the world
>there are people
>that unironically enjoy watching this and can tell all those moeblobs apart
>I wish people would stop having fun around me
If I had read my ridiculous post without having seen the show I would probably think the same thing. To see what I'm talking about I'd encourage you to rewatch the show while thinking about all of the different levels of parody which are going on. Watch the scene where Hana tells her mother that she wants to continue seshado because it will help her to arrange flowers "with more vigor" and then consider which is more likely: that the writer intended that scene to be taken totally seriously, or that it's a piece of absurd comedy. Could they have chosen anything that would've more starkly contrasted tank combat or looked more ridiculous in juxtaposition?
Anyway, I don't expect you to actually do that of course. I wouldn't do it. I guess the point I'm making is that I like GuP for two primary reasons: the badass tank battles, and the self-aware sense of humor about the whole thing.
FUCKING CHEATS. DRIFTING PERSHINGS CHEATS.
I want to
snuggle withthis girl so badly.
I have not seen an actual good reason for someone to dislike GuP. The only ones who seem to hate it are edgelordfags that just want to hate it from looking at it and never wanting to give it a chance.
There's not real reason so I'll just meme on you with CARBON COATING
Säkkijärvi liberated from russian scum when?
To be fair, if by "substance" he means "generic moe shit" then that's fairly accurate. Only like 30 minutes of the movie doesn't have tank battles, and most of that is taken up by PLOT.
For everyone else it's more than enough.
I don't know why that tiny white flag makes me laugh so much.
Carbon coating or not, everyone in the Crusader should be dead. No one is wearing any safety restraints.
I crack up every time I see this clip.
They're all indestructible. Why else do you think some of them idolize a bear who's only noteworthy trait is the ability to be injured?
And I'll throw in my GuP theory about the carbon coating and how it fits into the whole universe, again.
Theory: There is no apparent war, though there is plenty of modern war technology available to civilians. Why? Because this "carbon coating" is actually a hyper-advanced armor technology that has made traditional warfare almost impossible.
Think about it. The carbon coating has several attributes that make it the perfect armor:
1. Thin enough to be applied between the external armor of a tank and the internal crew space without any visible external or internal modification.
2. Light enough that it adds a negligible amount of weight to the total mass of the tank.
3. Strong enough to withstand direct impact from high-velocity kinetic penetrators and high-explosive anti-tank rounds, and even massive artillery rounds.
4. Cost-effective enough to be applied to all tanks uniformly.
If such a technology exists, it would make modern warfare extremely different since no loss of human life would occur. I'm sure the carbon coating could be applied to personal body armor to make guns almost useless as well. If the carbon coating has any ridged strength, which I assume it does since tank crew spaces aren't crushed or mangled, it would also explain the possibility of the floating school-ships, since it could be used to make the hull extremely strong and light.
As warfare fell out of favor, friendly competition between schools and organizations using the left over war material in a non-lethal manor became popular.
Why tanks became popular only amongst girls is anyone's guess,
>Why tanks became popular only amongst girls is anyone's guess,
>On the other hand, WWI, in which these modern weapons were comitted, turned out to be a tragic war in which casualties massively exceeded those in previous wars. Worried women, centered around mothers and wives used media to push a large campaign denouncing tank combat and machine-gun shooting as "ungentlemanly", unchivalrous and barbaric. Conversely, airplanes, with their duels and episodes in which planes running out of ammunition or suffering defects were allowed to escape, was greatly promoted as being "full of chivalry", and when combined with the elegance of aerobatics, was beautified. In this way, an atmosphere that perceives male tankers as despicable and "uncool" was formed. Furthermore, while car racing was popular in Europe, racing with the head sticking out messes up the hair and dirties the face, along with the danger of serious casualties have kept almost all females from participating. At that point, females that use disposed of tanks for racing started to appear. Though tanks have the disadvantage of being hot and stinky, it was popular among progressive women because the armor makes it safe. The advent of 1-2 man tankettes further increased its popularity among women due to their compactness and ease of operation, and lots of tankette matches were held. In this way, tankette matches fused with armored chariot matches and Senshado was born in Europe.
Also something about women's tankette races starting just after WWI.
Would be a lot better if it was a little bit realistic and the tanks weren't driven by fucking lolis what the fuck but wew everything is related to mass consumption of shit like this
It's probably because they don't realise just how much GuP and /ak/-style material is coming out, and assume this is just a circlejerking general.
Which it is, in a way, but we still have a healthy stream of new content to keep us going.
What annoys me is how much waifu-fagging and shipping happens in the threads. The show had an extreme lack of anything romantic that wasn't directly tied into a joke and excluded nearly all things yuri.
I have to fall back and let people enjoy things the way they want to enjoy it, but I personally think they do the series and the fanbase a disservice when they do. That doesn't stop me from trying to convince people to my side, from time to time.
On the other hand, I am that fag that hates Ribbon Warrior too, which is just a horrible yuri shit-storm and doesn't even bother to match itself to the already absurd internal-reality of GuP.
I'm kind of wishing for a doujin where the cast ends up getting conscripted into tank divisions of their respective countries.
you wanna link that anon?
against my better judgement
You bastards sicken me.
Yet, the voice cast did a SUPERB job anyways (no, really, they even got some shared awards for it). One of those cases of sinergy (I'm fully aware some tend to throw that word as a buzzword, but this was one of the cases it ACTUALLY happened) betwen VAs.
If you remember Shirobako (anime about making anime made by the same director and full of references to how GuP as made, in case you do not remember), it even includes a reference to that - the newbie VAs doing a superb job that nobody expected being so good).
One of the show's fortes is actually being quite good at mixing 3d and 2d - in the movie, the long pan towards and around the tank zooming on Miho's face has been hailed as one of the best-made such mixes so far.
We all KNOW we're in a bait thread. Just that his triggering at the show is actually amusing to watch. The extremes at which anti-GuPfags get to try and justify not liking a good and popular show are as amusing as the extremes that oldtimes Evafags got to try and convince themselves that they had not been trolled hard by Anno.
>not wanting to see cute girl mourning the comrades they lost in the latest battle
That's pretty weird, Anon.
Thing is, some TRY to be witty, and others MANAGE to be witty. Ignoring that Anon and if he managed it or not, ruth is, the series authors DID manage. They did strike the sweet spot betwen self-parody and seriousness.
Basically, take a premise so absurd that you CAN'T take it seriously, and then PRETEND you take it seriously.
Nice reaction image
>somewhere in the world
>there are people
>that unironically enjoy watching this and can tell all those edgeblobs apart
Enjoy your mature anime for mature watchers like yourself
Berserk anime is shit, Berserk manga turned to shit with the ship and you know it
The movie changed from a sports anime to pic related. Much like Alien was a terror movie and ALiens was an action one.
Like I said, I have a different opinion, and I mostly keep that opinion to myself, except from time to time when I feel like expressing my opinion to see if anyone else out there agrees with me.
I'm harder on Ribbon Warrior. Considering I dislike the waifu-fagging and shipping that happens amongst the regular GuP threads, Ribbon Warrior fans are pretty much my nemeses.
I don't try to ruin threads or start threads about the shit that I don't like, but I do try to be that voice of dissent every now and again so that anyone who is like-minded knows they aren't alone.
To great detail.
1) rounds don't penetrate because special ammo (realistic frangible ammo)
2) girls don't get hurt because carbon coating ("magical spall liner" that alo absorbs shockwaves)
3) girls DO get minor abrasions, blackfaces, brocken glasses... by tanks overturning but nobody gets hurt because light show, that's why - yet the element of danger is acknowledged (they ALWAYS ask the crew of a down tank if they are OK, that they ALWAYS are OK is the series' tone).
Like it or leave it. It' sjust like those shows where a minor cut gives you a gush of blood and a grievous death, jut the other way around.
>3. Strong enough to withstand direct impact from high-velocity kinetic penetrators and high-explosive anti-tank rounds, and even massive artillery rounds.
Nope. Outright stated in teh series to use NON-PENETRATING special ammo. Th ecarbon coating is just a glorified spall liner.
They all are hold by the loader in her LOADER STRONK arms.
>gets triggered by girls in tank
>accuses about triggering when called out on it
I know people is used to throw "projecting" as a buzzword around here, but here we have an amusing LITERAL example.
The amusing thing is how many people go "muh realistic depiction of tank combat" while every single part of that one is wrong (TL;DR: all parts that should be burning aren't, all parts that are shouldn't).
Edgelords are usually that illiterate.
any of you fags play War Thunder?
fuck off asshole
Are there more versions of GuP girls rejecting me?
Do you really want to suffer from Nonna's wrath?
You'll be begging for death after what she's done to you.
Nosebleed from impure thoughts, Anzu?
That was a fun read.
>Lil' Rommel stuffing her hat with random cloth for extra protection against the cold
>Midoriko asking why they are doing it
>they don't bother telling her
>she freezes to death 1 page later
Gritty Girls und panzer when?
I wonder what it feels like getting burned like that
Probably just add whatever nip word is for ryona
Now that you mentioned it I'm probably gonna start searching for it too
>GuP suffering and edge
Why can't we just let fun things be fun
Everything is cute and moeshit these days, there's nothing else.
The last edgy and grimdark series I can think of was Elfen Lied, of course people with a hard-on for war and drama will hijack a series with a setting like this.
>Everything is cute and moeshit these days
>i only started watching anime yesterday
>Everything is cute and moeshit these days
You provide no counter-examples.
And you'd have to be really retarded to seriously claim that there's still as much violent shit getting made as in the 90s.
>i only started watching anime yesterday
More like mid 90s, but whatever
Never new they're from the same director.
Thanks for the recommendation, but Blood C was a mess, IMO, though I am a huge fan of the original Blood.
Honestly, I wish I could recommend something to contribute and not be a pain, but I can't even think of any recent gory anime off the top of my head, which brings me back to my earlier point. >>145359384
