Honestly I think you're misinterpreted Mikumo's personality. Mikumo is a very complex character and her development is given very subtle.

Mikumo is a girl who is very confident in her skills and knows her place in Walkure. She doesn't have any memory of growing up and only has an urge to sing. This info helps to explain why Mikumo doesn't care about anything apart from singing. Mikumo cares a lot about the members of Walkure, however she is very stern. Take the incident with Freyja as an example. She cares a lot for Freyja but she wants to see her excel, even if it means being aggressive. Even with Kaname, she shows that she cares. She listens to orders from her, she respects her and is comfortable enough sharing her lack of background with her. Mikumo is a person who you grow to understand. I'm sure everyone here has that one friend that might come across as somebody you wouldn't want to be friends with but they are really caring and just a different kind of person. Mikumo also doesn't know how to express her emotions, or has an understanding of what they are. They only way she knows how to express her emotions are through singing, which correlates with Messers funeral and Freyja's birthday. If you genuinely felt she stole the show, that's good silly.

Macross never does things twice, they already had an idol love triangle in Frontier so they made Mirage and forgot to develop her. Conversely, this hurt Mikumo's screentime since she's heavily marketed and is treated by the show as a main character.

The pale triangle stuff is just a meme forced by magazine memelords, anyone with a brain does not really believe that shit since they go out of their way to show tension and drama from Mirage's side.

There are also no female characters worth noting outside of Walkure and they already did the bridge bunny thing too in the very first series. Maybe if Chuck's sister were younger or something.

Mikumo doesn't interact with anyone outside of Walkure. The only people I can remember are Arad, Mirage and Chuck. That's about it. I doubt you could provide a situation where she was a bitch to them.

This is up for interpretation. Mikumo was the one who went out of her way to show the others that she was capable of joining Walkure even though her fold waves weren't up to par (episode 2). Those were just taunts from Mikumo and I doubt she was serious. Back then Freyja acted when she was in a pinch, Mikumo's autistic interpretation probably thought those words would help. Good intentions, harsh methods.

I don't think the series needs so many changes. The main problem is Mirage getting ignored, because if they wanted they could focus on her pilot plot but they haven't done that for the last few eps. Maybe they could have given the Knights more scenes, but I guess they wanted to keep them mysterious because revealing more about the White Knight Squad almost equals to revealing all the plot that has to do with Windermere, and their aim was to have us discover that alongside the protagonists's POV.
