Well, to first develop a kakuja Kaneki ate ghouls for months. Later, in the sewers, his kakuja develops a new mask and six centipede tails.

Then in :Re, he feasts on Eto's kakuja.

It's not like he went from his lab kakuja to a full-kakuja, the evolution in the sewers, though obscure, was still pretty great.

Also, I do think Eto's kakuja is more substantial than a few ghouls.

Oh, and he technically ate Takizawa's ear, but I'm not sure that did a lot.

Kaneki has full control, doesn't go insane, can form anything with his kakuja that he wants when he wants.

If he's not full-kakuja at that point, when is he? At that point, it really only seems like an arbitrary differentiation.

So I think technically, being able to control your kakuja is seen as "completing" it, but that doesn't mean it will stop evolving. If you keep cannibalizing, it will probably keep progressing to newer forms, and there's not a point where your kakuja is "complete" and you hit a ceiling and it won't ever change again.

Wow, I honestly am really hoping that the Betrayal Day shit wasn't actually as obvious as Takizawa betraying Tatara. Most of the foreshadowing in the calendar was done fairly tastefully. I was hoping it was referring to Takizawa and his 'alignment' with Aogiri as the betrayal.

I actually really liked the last chapter, it was just strange as fuck. (would have been 100x better if Suzuya actually died, but everything else stayed the same) but this is.. I don't know, man. I think Tatara even having a kakuja is kind of lame, but with everything else, I'm worried. Tatara vs Hoji and Takizawa / Akira is literally the only saving grace for the Rue arc.

Just feels like Ishida is trying to wrap up storylines too quickly. I'm honestly shocked Kuro escaped. She'll probably get randomly finished off.

Tatara literally became a non character after he went Kakuja. Literally said nothing besides some random nonsense. If you switched Houji with Suzuya I would have thought this was just another Kurona chapter. Biggest issue with Kakujas outside of Yoshimura is that they just become crazy sci fi monsters in both looks and personality.

I was interested in finding out more about him and his personality in general but instead Houji got the focus when literally no one gives a fuck about him.

tokyo ghoul used to be a character driven story where you followed the protagonists through their character arcs, I don't really know what the fuck it is anymore, I'd say it has become a generic shounen like Naruto but main characters are written off or forgotten without any context or reason. it has been months since anything happened to any of the main characters outside of kaneki, and even then he is a completely different character than who he was before he lost his memory. Aogiri Tree turned out to be a red herring and V was one as well since it turned out the washuus were behind it as well (so the secret leaders of the CCG were actually the actual leaders of the CCG) with the added twist that they were ghouls all along, which doesen't tell us anything on any long term plan they may have.

"freedom from the birdcage" is a metaphorical concept though, everyone else is not doing anything for a specific reason. Most of the content of the manga now is doves fighting ghouls because they are paid to do it and ghouls fighting back. But, for example, the whole Aogiri island plotline is headed nowhere except for a list of dead characters since the leadership of Aogiri was already killed off.
I get that Eto wanted to build up Kaneki as some sort of ghoul messiah, but I have no idea what kaneki thinks about this or about anything since his personality changed completely.
Also yeah I liked how in the first series you had "good guys" and "bad guys" (for lack of a better term) on both sides with different objectives, but at least you followed those characters and knew what they wanted from life. Of the protagonists you listed the only one we ever actively follow now is kaneki and again, he might as well be somebody else

I will never understand why Ishida did this. I remember being convinced he'd keep this duality from first part and after few chapters of of this completely different in tone Quinx & Haise sol we'd switch to Aogiri's pov and have Amon's take on his new life as a ghoul, a nice mirror to Kaneki. But he completely abandoned this. How fucking out of place it's going to be when Amon finally shows for good in :re? Will he forget how to use brain for plot convenience as well? It's so fucking tiring.

And don't even get me started on this whole amnesia shit. Kaneki should have remembered everything and if Ishida insisted on him going through suicidal phase then it should be from the very first chapter of :re. It'd save everyone a lot of unnecessary bullshit and would be actually interesting. Not to mention he'd give this plot more chapters, so Kaneki getting back his will to live would have an actual impact, because considering Kaneki's issues it's a huge step.
