Why aren't you taking advantage of the opportunity that you have? You have an opportunity right now that you will probably never have again. A lot of NEETs are acting like they're going to be NEETs for the rest of their life and they're studying Japanese at a leisurely pace, but you probably won't be a NEET in a few years from now.

You have to grind hard now and get everything you can get out of these years of having no responsibilities or obligations to take up your study time. What's worse than not learning Japanese is having this opportunity of a lifetime of being a NEET and then still not learning Japanese because you wasted your NEET years by taking it easy. That's far worse. At least normal people can say that their work hours took away their study time and that's why they never learned Japanese. NEETs can't say that, you have all of the time in the world right now.

You should be studying at least three times as long as the average normal and employed person. There's no excuse for anything less and if you do less than that then you're going to hate yourself when this opportunity is no longer here.

Once I stopped being a NEET I became way more efficient at studying (not just nip). Honestly when you're a NEET it's hard to get the kind of motivation required to do something for hours on end, even when it's something you want to do/like doing.

Generally I just go for meaning + reading, but the first time I see a new word I try to understand the sentence to get context for it.

I'd also recommend installing this addon: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/498789867
as it lets you replay sounds in a much more easy to control way, without having to listen to the entire sentence audio every time if you're just trying to get the pronunciation of the vocab down. It gives little playback buttons like in my screenshot.

>Once you have read through your chosen grammar guide, you are ready to start reading Japanese. While it’s not necessary, reading will be easier if you have reached about 2000 words in Core2K/6K at this point

Okay is anyone actually capable of reading anything with only 2000 words?
I hit 1800 words so I read through Tae Kim to be able to read, but once I tried I noticed I can't read shit cause I don't know most of the words I encountered.

Am I doing something wrong?
I seriously can't believe that anyone here is able to read if you only learned 2k words from the vocab deck, especially with the stupid shit you learn early on that seem like I won't encounter it any time soon when reading.

Can I change the order for new cards so that it makes more sense?

Learning shit like 茶色 before learning 茶 or learning 曇る before learning 雲 makes no sense imo for example, I mean it's not that bad just weird, but there are other vocabs that are rather difficult like all the business and political terms that seem not so important for beginners.
>>
>>145153083
You're obviously supposed to look up words while reading.
>>
>>145153083
Of course you can't read fluently with 2000 words you idiot. You start reading and then learn vocabulary through reading. That's pretty much how you HAVE to do it.
>>
>>145151138

It seems like you have an add-on that lets you type in your answer, which looks helpful... if that's the case then could someone tell me the name of it?
>>
>>145153083
You're gonna have to reorder the entire deck by hand.
Also, 2000 words is fairly good for starting to read a manga with furigana and mining everything.
>>
So I'm doing RTK, Core2K, and Japanese the Manga Way. Any other resources I should use, or super-beginner friendly reading material?
>>
>>145153239
It's not an addon it's built in to anki.
>>
>>145153083
I started Tae Kim at 2k as well.
I'm around 5k and I still have to check the dictionary all the time, lots of unseen kanji.

But I'd say I am around a point where I have a good set of vocabulary to understand lots of sentences without help.

>>

JtMW is a waste of time.
>>
>>145153685
The highlighted lines are how you make typing work, sorry for not being so clear.

Just change the thing on the back of the card that you want to type in on the front from like {{Meaning}} to {{type:Meaning}} and then on the front add a {{type:Meaning}}.

My styling is actually a lot longer than what you can see in the screenshot and what you can see in the screenshot has nothing to do with typing.

The manual has a more detailed explanation here: http://ankisrs.net/docs/manual.html#typinganswers
>>
>>145153689

The reason I want to use it is because of RealKana. I enjoyed learning Kana with RealKana and I'm just so used to typing in answers that way.

I'm not done at all but I'm currently doing 23 new ones a day from what I've been told its average but you can push to like 50 maximum if you have the time.

if you did 23 a day every day for 3 months you'd be done with 2k words.

I handle 23 fine but it will take me solid hour and a half to get all of it done including my backlog ones but once I get a better grasp on my old ones I'll probably increase the count.

Set it as high as you want and lower it if its to much its not that big of a deal.

I have written a Japanese song that is all gibberish, to pay back for all the Engrish I have suffered through these years.

Should I transcribe the lyrics as ateji? Or would that be too easy? Would kana end up being more confusing?
Perhaps throwing in some homophone regular words in there?

The context is a coach coaching a girl to stretch more in a gymnastics class. By 演技が小さく見えるわよ I'm guessing they mean that they want their form/performance to look smaller/tighter? Or that they're saying their form looks weak? I'm unsure.

I just realized that I've finished core2k. People keep saying that core past 2k is not so useful, so would it be a good idea to drop it (i.e. set it to 0 new words per day) at this point, and focus on reading instead?
Currently I do 15 core words and 15 mined words a day, and that'd become 0 and 30 instead, respectively.

one buddhist guru in China said to his four disciple

>[You get the skin of my teachings] you don't get me

>[You get the meat of my teachings]you don't get me

>[You get the bone of my teachings]you get me

>[You get the marrow of my teachings]you get me

From here on, the chink took the term 皮肉[skin and meat] as something being superficial. (They also use 皮毛[skin and hair] sometimes).

Being the autist as usual, the nip took the sarcastic criticism subtext, and associate 皮肉 with it.

It's useful, but there are diminishing returns - there's no reason not to learn the words since you might want to know them eventually (fluency, translation, living in Japan, whatever), but if you're just playing porn games or reading manga, you'd be better off just picking native media apart for mining.

I never wait for anything to be "rock solid" though. I only hit again if I can't remember it.

These midgets don't know shit. Craned necks have become a global epidemic among white collar workers thanks to non-adjustable desks that are too low for anyone falling above the average in height, forcing them to lean forward to look at their monitors properly.

Oh my god why is it such a fucking pain in the ass to sync subs

You sync them to a fucking T and then one minute later they've somehow slipped to being like 10 seconds behind

So it turns out I need my hand held. Like, I should be in an institution for drooling on myself so hard. After hitting 4k in Anki, I decided to start my first mining deck.

And... I thought Rikaichan and Rikaisama were the same thing for like, the last year, because I never read past the "Rikai-".

I got Real-Time Import set up, but I'm having trouble auto-importing sentences to my cards from Jisho.
Take this for example. If I hover over 仕事, my example sentence will only show "しごと仕事", because the furigana screws up the coding somehow.

Any solution to fixing this, or should I just manually add sentences to every mined card?
>>

>>
>>145186563
I don't like auto import. I feel like it makes me take less time understanding the word.

I also like to add images of where I found stuff to easier recall it. Like when I encountered it in a manga I screencap the page with the sentence the word is in, etc.

You're probably right. I'm just used to core6k and am trying to replicate it.

It just looks stupid right now. No idea what I should add to it yet.

>>145186823
I don't think the act of making the card adds that much to memory though, especially when you have 30-50 new cards and manually adding each would just become mindlessly dull otherwise.

Texthooking without anki mining is an all-around stupid idea though. No idea what people think they'll get out of that.
>>
>>145186948
>>145187174
I only add like 3-5 words per manga volume and I can't texthook images.

I could auto import from the dictionary in my browser, but then I'd still have to edit the card to add my picture and make other edits.
Doesn't really save me any trouble.

Capture2Text is literally in the guide, and clipboard inserter for firefox does exactly this for me from images

>>145187922
I didn't try that because there's no linux version and it doesn't bother me that much to add cards manually.
When I import manga or games I'll have to do that either way.

>>
Why won't my IME find 来 for く? It finds 来る for くる but when I type く or any sound for that matter shouldn't it find all the Kanji with that reading? I'm not sure how it works.
>>
>>145189012
Because the IME works out the kanji based on actual words.
Try らい or just write a word using that kanji and delete the other parts.
>>
>>145187460
I read manga on a tablet and use OCR Manga Reader for Android:
http://forum.koohii.com/thread-11121.html
Can't stand reading manga on a computer/now comfortably lying down and this allows for pretty easy mining of words.

>>145188771
>Japanese dont use Kanji in daily life
You're right. They use Hangul.
>>
>>145189012
Individual-kanji-by-reading works better with on-readings than it does with kun-readings, く being a kun-reading.

To type out 来, use らい, which is the on-reading, or even type out a whole word that starts with 来 and delete the excess.
>>
I have a question for the Anki auto important system with Rika.

Sometimes a word like 圧されて has two entries with different kana and meanings, but Rikai only imports the top most one. Is it possible to make it import both?
>>
>>145189498
So far this issue seems to not have been properly addressed/fixed by cb4960. What anons usually do is apply super sticky mode (U key) while hovering over the word, then hovering over the correct definition within the blue popup box.

It's a work around.
>>
>>145189250
>>145189469
I see, thanks. It's not really an issue, I was just wondering.
>>
>>145189498
Someone posted a fork in the last thread that apparently allows it.
https://github.com/txgio/orikaisama/releases

The sticky mode method only works if the desired entry happens to be the top entry for the kana form.
>>
>>145189255
Hangul is pretty cool, though. Makes kana look like backwards squiggles.
>>
>>145189711
I like how they work but I think they look like shit
>>
>>145189695
Someone tried it yet?
>>
>>145189711
Hangul looks okay but kanji and kana just feel better. I've seen Hangul and Hanja (Chinese characters) written together and it looks really odd.

Oh and by the end the entire course (5 semesters = 2 1/2 years) you know 250 Kanji.

>>145190404
In a nutshell, the teaching is less effective and it ends abruptly when the term does.

You get a mix of basic grammar and tourist-grade phrases, and wallow in the mistakes of yourself and your classmates for a little while each week. No immersion, no compelling content, no long-term plan.

I don't know if it's actually needed in practice but in the course description for the THIRD Japanese course given at my uni it states something along the lines of "by selfstudy and with the teachers help you'll get the opportunity to learn the Japanese script, Hiragana and Katakana".
That is after you're supposed to have already followed the first two courses, which together consist of 16 one and a half hour meetings.

I have to take 2 semesters of a foreign language and I was just hoping to test out of that after a year of self-study, but the course descriptions at my uni are
JP1120: An intensive study of basic skills: pronunciation, listening comprehension, speaking, and some composition.
JP1121: A continuation of JPN 1120. More sophisticated oral/aural skills are attained. Basic reading skills are acquired.
What the fuck? Why would you learn to speak before you can even read? Hopefully I have enough listening/speech skills after a year to pass the test.
>>

>>
>>145191778
>Why would you learn to speak before you can even read?
I don't know, but focusing on oral skills seems to be standard for foreign language courses.
>>
>>145191778
>Why would you learn to speak before you can even read?
I don't see what's wrong with this, if you know how to speak you can pronounce the stuff you read correctly in your head and don't fall into bad habits.
Also oral skills are much easier acquired in person when you have a native speaker correcting stuff you wouldn't notice yourself.
>>
>>145192023
>I don't see what's wrong with this, if you know how to speak you can pronounce the stuff you read correctly in your head and don't fall into bad habits.
This is a language with about 50 different sounds.
>>
>>145191778
>What the fuck? Why would you learn to speak before you can even read?
As opposed to learning to read but being unable to speak like DJT?
>>
>>145192108
Which you can still pronounce wrong. And you'll still be an stuttering mess unless you practice.
>>
>>145191834
>I feel pretty bad for you if you yourself consider an hour of your daily studying done mindlessly

Well it's kind of hard to be enthusiastic about something as mindnumbing as flashcards, especially when you've been doing them for over a year already, luckily I still have the time for 6 hours of reading compelling content everyday to counteract it
>>
>>145192108
I was not exclusively talking about Japanese.
Languages are primarily spoken and proper speaking is important.
>>
>>145192268
Anki is like a habit for me, it doesn't consume any energy at all.

Reading on the other hand made me really tired in the beginning. Now I can go hours without fatigue.
>>
>>145192288
How much 1 on 1 time from lecturers in colleges are given to correcting prounounciation. Pairing off two beginners and telling them to practice prounounciation is pointless
>>
>>145192139
I mean, you'll have an easier time learning to speak after learning to read than the other way around. Learning to put your writing skills into words isn't something you need to start back from zero for.
It'd be something else if speaking were as conveniently done as reading and writing on the internet, but it isn't and as such /djt/ is doing it the right way, really.

>>
>>145192453

>>145192388
What's important about having native speakers present is that they will point out stuff you do wrong you aren't aware of, even if the time you spend with them is limited.

>Pairing off two beginners and telling them to practice prounounciation is pointless
