Finished the first cour of Rainbow Live. Random thoughts:
- the artstyle is my favorite out of any /ai/ show I've watched, only S1 non-CG Aikatsu comes anywhere close
- having the main characters manage the Prism Stone shop is an interesting setup compared to Aurora Dream's Prism Show agency members (don't know if Dear My Future also uses this setup because torrenting it is impossible)
- Kouji and Kazuki are cute
- Hiro is a faggot and I enjoy seeing his BTFO expressions when something doesn't go his way
- all three Edel Rose members are pretty good rivals, much better than Serenon in AD
- I don't like Naru nearly as much as Aira when I compare the first cour of RL and AD
- not sure I like Ann and Ito as much as Rizumu and Mion either, but I'll reserve judgment until later (especially since Mion wasn't really in AD's first cour)

They only messed up because of the timing of the SLQ Cup. It was originally in Fall, but they had to move it to Spring in S3 in preparation for ending S4 in half a year. The Cup didn't even happen in S2 because of the whole WM/2wingS thing.

Man this episode looked bad compared to the last couple. But still, it was fun to get some Ako development, even if it was super embarrassing watching her go on and on about Subaru. Having it be Kanata and Koharu doing the talking made it very balanced. But what I think was the most interesting part was what wasn't said. The reason Theater Class got btfo last episode in Summer Fest was because Ako was too focused on Subaru and not on being an idol. That lets you look back and understand what happened on a deeper level.

Finally we get some confirmed Yuri next episode. I didn't see Lily though; maybe they're secretly the same person.

I'm trying to think of some sort of "combat" system for an idol RPG. I don't think traditional JRPG style battles would make much sense for idols. I'd like to incorporate auditions and performances, which will give stat gains to certain attributes (dancing, singing, etc.) but I don't know how those would translate to "battling." I figured there would be some sort of announcement board that your characters could look at to pick up auditions; I think having the game be side-quest or job focused would give a lot of opportunities for character development.

You'd have to go around the school and you'd meet new characters, fulfilling to recruit idols into your group, though you could only take a few with you at a time. Obviously each idol would have different base stats, abilities, and affinities. In addition to auditions and performances increasing stats, you'd be able to buy and find new outfits for your idols which would also increase certain stats, or possibly give them new skills. Aikatsu uses cards and PriPara does something similar, but I think this game would be better off being more grounded in reality, the outfits needing to be put on instead of just carried around as cards or whatever. You'd have to think carefully about your performances and equip the right outfits; it would lend itself to more careful planning as you wouldn't be able to just carry around all your outfits with you.

I think one of the difficulties when making a game like that is give it a good balance between the idol elements and the RPG elements. You need to make it so it doesn't feel like any other RPG but with idol elements instead of swords and magic.

I mean the idol elements needs to be more than just a dress the game is wearing, and that without that dress it's just another typical RPG.

I agree, which is why I'm having difficulty coming up with an idea for a "battle" system. I though that maybe your team could go up against other idols in some sort of battle, but I feel that there would be too little gameplay if that were the case.

I do have some ideas for what a "battle" system would be, though. The different attributes would be in charge of different skills, and the level of those attributes would determine the effectiveness. The higher the dance stat, the more dances they learn and the more "damage" the dances would do. Singing would be almost like status effects, giving buffs to your party or debuffs to the enemies; possibly maybe some healing songs as well. I would like for there to be some sort of audience element as well, which is where some sort of communication stat could come in. The better your performance, the happier the crowd will get, and the happier the crowd gets, the more bonuses you receive, which could mean anything from buffs to more money gained at the end of battle. Sorta like Paper Mario almost.

I think outfit coordination would also be important. The individual outfits grant stat bonuses and abilities, but maybe if you have your whole group wearing the same outfit it could give additional bonuses or unique skills only available when all your characters are wearing the same thing. You'd have to decide between equipping your idols to their individual strengths or powering them up as a group. It could make for some fun party compositions.
