By the time they got christened the White Hawks Griffith clearly saw him as a close friend. That was the ironic thing: that thing about stomping all over people to get what he wanted was just bravado, but he admitted what he always wanted to Charlotte then: an equal.

Guts took it entirely the wrong way but pretty much by the time Griffith was trusting him with his dirtier work, he clearly thought of him as one, even if neither of them realized that, that's why Guts leaving and beating him destroyed him so. To him, Guts decided being equals wasn't enough.
