Why not? KonoSuba was super funny, many girls were great and Kazuma definitely stands out as a MC. The low budget wasn't a problem either, it actually added to the comedy and they spent the little money they had on some beautiful scenes like Megumin's explosion.
The only other show competing for AOTY so far is Flying Witch. If I were to judge at this very moment, I would put it as #1 but I think Re:zero will get better starting now.
Overall it's a weak year.

Yeah I guess it depends on your perspective how successful things are or not. Haifuri was marketed like it was going to be the next GuP and easy seasonal top seller and has benefits out the ass in the disc sets while Re:Zero just kind of started off slow and really only came into the picture as a top seller late in the season like KonoSuba in Winter. The fact that they are neck and neck now is kind of surprising considering the marketing leading into the season.

Haifuri has event tickets up until but not including it's 4th volume so we won't get a completely accurate look on it's sales average until then. I think Re:zero only has them in the first two so this is it. This season Love Live and B-Project have them in their first two as well though Love Live only added it's second one this week as reflected by the huge spike and stability in it's second volumes rank. In what world? And are you ignoring that many characters are caricatures fitting a silly children's show when the concept is that it's a serious period drama? Are you ignoring that many of the events are absurd, like the bungled murder of knife guy while he's doing S&M play or the murdering of a chef just because the don doesn't like the sauce?

Uhh, those elements are the direct result of the writing. Those elements are the execution. Are you pretending that execution and writing are just buzzwords that you can use to defend a point without concern for their meaning? If you think the "writing" is just the plot, you're wrong, and even if you weren't then what we have is a very mediocre mafia story regardless and is on the level of pulp fiction.
