When violence and gore is clearly over compensating for the fact that the source material's plot is shallow as fuck. The majority of anime or manga that favors style over substance usually ends up being perceived as edgy shit.

It de-edges rather quickly.
I was rather surprised at how mature the series got over 2 volumes.
Especially why the MC does the whole thing he does, that just seemed so obvious and stupid it sort of made me stop and think about the whole nature of the story for a good minute.
