Most of the episodes in the first half involved solving mysteries. Even the beginning of the second half before they got to the magic show had a few. like when the ghost was actually a dude who was so black you couldn't see him at night

Actually, the original story is too dark compared to the rendition by the anime. Victorique is constantly drugged since birth by Marquis Albert and was taken to Saint Marguerite in a cage, and the wartime arc was more dreary than it was in the anime. That's only what I know, though.
