It seems to me you have a lack of understanding what pretentious means. Don't quickly categorize anime that require some form of analysis as pretentious. Pretentiousness is dictated by the supposed profound and self important themes of a show that, in reality, has no such thing. Instead those themes are reductive and rather simple.
An excellent example is Psycho-pass. It portrays itself as being profound, discussing the dangers of science in a world where the fate of individuals is predetermined by some algorithm that analyzes their psychology. However the concept stops there. It's never fully fleshed out. There's a lack of nuance and it's all really simply and obvious.

My theory is that there isn't actually any "pretentious anime". If we consider all anime to be a form of "art", the whole series kinda comes as like a package deal per se. Even if themes are hardly developed, it just shows the incompetentcy of the staff/some other factor, ie buget. There are only people are pretentious, when they choose to like something without truly appreciating it, in order to portray an illusion of "culture".
This is all just my own opinion, please do refute me if you identify any logical fallacies.

Not him, Oshii's Gosenzosama is the most avant-garde anime I'm familiar with. I don't mean like experimental 'surreal' animation shorts, which is probably the most primitive approach to animation you can have, I mean genuinely advancing a dense, radical narrative form.
