There's far more to the show that what exists on the surface, and constructs a story that both fullfills a propelling situation with strict world-building, and makes symbolic connections to the challenge that the MC faces in overcoming his flaws.

As I watched I couldn't help but think, oh man look at this retard. But there was a point that I realized - holy fuck I've BEEN that retard. I've had these kinds of arguments before. And I suspect many anons, like it or not, would find parts of themselves in Subaru. When he spazzes out you love to hate him and when he succeeds you're that much more excited because you honestly didn't know if he actually would be able to overcome his previous failures.

Maybe it's just me, but I've become so jaded that the simple fact that you genuinely don't know if he's going to succeed excites me. So many other stories these days are painful obvious that hero will succeed at what ever they try with minimal effort or set backs. The difference with most shows though is that the person gets punished for being too idealistic with his sense of righteousness. Naivety on Subaru's mindset is one of the aspects that puts it a little bit above the of the typical MC trope.

In the case of Rem though in ep 14, she is the self sacrificing person who doesn't really expect that much return or doesn't want to impose. Her words to Subaru when she was questioned as to why she's doing it, her answer was as simple as because she wanted to. She acknowledges that Subaru is gunning for Emilia yet she doesn't bear any sense of anger for the things she is willing to give/or has given to Subaru that will probably not be reciprocated.

Mind you though, that Rem is not a perfect character. I still feel bad about her undermining her value so much. The Rem AUs touch up on this on a very refreshing perspective of Rigel.

The world building/politics is pretty much 0 at this point in the show. Nothing is known past the name of the capital and some bitch has to be chosen to rule because the royal family/king went into hiding or some shit. I barley remember because it's never talked about. The candidates meeting was awful, it served no purpose besides saying that those were the other candidates. Was even worse when random fucking people around the room are screaming about random shit, like you'd expect a gathering of that many prestigious individuals to at least behave like a normal adults. The other candidates all said how bad of a ruler they would be and Emilia, who we have 0 reason as to why she wants to be ruler, says shit like "I want all people to be equal." Are people not equal in the city? We don't know, we're never told. Her ambitions are unknown. Why she and all the other candidates were chosen is unknown. Why they even still let Subaru in there in talk is fucking weird, he's a nobody. I can understand after he claimed to be Emilia's knight that they'd let him stay but not before all that shit, he's a nobody who shouldn't even been allowed to speak. The important parts were already laid out. The rest of the things you should know come as the plot progresses. And right now, it doesn't really need it yet.

What makes Re:Zero a fun watch right now is the lack of world building, and focus on plot/character. From the fragmented hints and situations described, all of the stereotypical archetypes are here and you get the sense there's a typical fantasy formula in place.

Bad guys themed after stars, with titles modeled off of the seven deadly sins (check). A series of trials to prove Emilia is worth of being the new ruler (check). Emilia having a resemblance to Satella and having her own special, unique power despite a desire to change the world for the better (check).

You can legitimately call it a deconstruction, since it takes the typical fantasy/isekai formula and just focuses in on the suffering porn that is Subaru's loop hell.

In fact, Subaru's nightmare perpetuates the idealistic dream scenario for Emilia. He manages to find the right world line for her where her hopes and aspirations aren't cut short because of her naiivety.

Fantasy world is a fantasy world. It's nothing more than a setting. If there's nothing more substantive than the world building (like plot, or in MMORPGs fun gameplay) you get World of Warcraft, painfully bland and uninspired shit.

Re:Zero has carved its niche. The setting is largely irrelevant. The anime is focused in on Subaru's resurrection. Subaru's resurrection is the main plot, and the sub plot is Emilia's effort to become the ruler. It's not the other way around.

Re:Zero is Mahouka of the season. Mahouka fans just like Re:Zero until the end persisted the shitty writing is actually not shitty writing, but hidden genius that unwashed masses just cant understand.

The reality though is, everyone just watches Re:Zero for waifus.

The reason Subaru is not a cliche MC is because he fits into many of these categories while also having some unique shit going on. His story has been wish fulfillment, it's been a sob story, he's been a moralfag and he's been an edgelord. There's obviously been some otaku pandering and there's certainly been some power fantasy gary stuff. He's likely a virgin, but he doesn't come across as a permavirgin due to his general confidence with women and his direct attitude toward his love interest who he focuses his affections on pretty much exclusively.

All of that is good characterization, but it still wouldn't work if it weren't well crafted. He doesn't come across as some kitchen sink character, he has very distinct traits throughout. He's impulsive, optimistic, narcissistic, and a little delusional. And over the course of the story those small cracks in his character realistically fray into near psychosis. Egocentric people really do tend to try and control everybody around them, they can believe that nobody around them can take care of themselves, and that everybody would be best off if they would just listen to what they had to say. It's a common problem that effects tons of real people, and it explodes into crazy for Subaru because of all the stress he's been put under.

There are lots of bad things about this show, but there are lots of good things as well. The characters are distinct and fleshed out enough to be investing (even all the miniscule supporting characters are more than one-dimensional, the fucking trap catgirl has depth even though she's on screen for like five minutes total!), and they're put into a story that is a fucking roller-coaster ride. It could still have easily been fucking horrible, but it manages to nail pacing and tone. There's some super negative shit that happens, but it never gets bogged down in it. There are some melodramatic moments, but the story itself is not melodramatic.

No, just no. After Rem`s "story" talking about "characters being distinct and fleshed out is just hypocrisity or lie. There are essentially 4 Rem characters, and about as many different Subaru characters. They arent the same character - the author totally failed at transition and consistency.

The only remotely decent written character is Emilia - the only, appeaering interesting once are the ones the author just displays the premise for making them mysterious and not diving much in.

The moment he focuses on someone and tries to expand their character, motivations, backstory etc it becomes apparent he is bad at it and destroys the belivability of the character.

Because I'm not comparing it to literature, I'm comparing it to anime. This isn't Dostoyesky, it's an action/adventure/drama anime.

The writing is not amazing, it has a ton of serious, obvious flaws, and I'll even agree that the character backstories seem weak. I just don't care that much about backstories. All that matters to me is how the character reads in the scene. The dialog, the repartee. I prefer character-driven shows, not plot-driven shows. And character means character of the scene.

Here, I'll give you an example. Remember those thugs who mugged him in the beginning, and showed up like four times throughout the series so far? Those random gimmick characters are more effective than most leads in seasonal anime. They have more character. They're more distinctly written, more effectively directed. They're not De Niro in Taxi Driver, but if you compare them to like the MC in 91 Days? They win easily. He's got infinitely more backstory, but they've got more character.

Rem fell for him recently and trusts him after the curse dogs, he actually tries to do something about her terrible self esteem and tells her to focus on her own positives. Remember Subaru's 2nd loop at arc 2? Where he explicitly said he would try to retrace his steps? It turned out differently because even the most minor difference in action (like Subaru not sucking as bad at chores in the first loop) causes alterations that make things play out differently. It's not like Steins;Gate where Kurisu completes the time leap machine regardless of whatever Okabe does.

Subaru's physical and magical specs, save the ever-intensifying smell of the witch, doesn't carry over to new loops. We can assume muscle memory is also reset. So Subaru's stuck with his shitty stats most of the time.

Subaru is fucking weak, like really really fucking weak to the point where the author explicitly said the only person Subaru can consistently won against is Petra (that fucking kid in the village). He does get better in later arcs but right now he is weak.

I loved the first two mini-arcs. I loved them so much I thought about the payoff in episodes 7-8 for days after. But I had to draw the line somewhere.

Subaru started acting irrationally, and you could see his mind breaking. What made the previously mentioned payoff so great was that other characters brought him out of that funk. It felt so cathartic to see him break down in front of his friends and come out of it a better person. But this is the only time this happens.

After that Subaru just fails, and fails, and loses his mind, and loses his friends, and he moves out of the realm where any sane person could really relate to him.

And then it becomes apparent at around episode 14 that the story is being written to just put the characters through as much emotional and physical torture as is made possibly by the time travel mechanic. This is Sword Art Online levels of "why the fuck do I have to watch this."

I had high hopes, and the first 8 episodes were still great, but this became offending to watch as the world is just kicking the main character while he's down. I watched up until episode 17 until I realized this was going nowhere.
