Pretty much this. Subaru gave her life meaning again with the motivational speech and shit so she childishly latched on to him as her life-line like Subaru did with Emilia.

Indeed, also with Subaru she didn't find a reason to live, but one to die. She is desperate to feel herself useful.

No.

Because a lot of the LN was skipped over. That's what I'm assuming, anyway.

Despite what you are saying it's true, remains the fact that her main reason can be understood also in the anime and it is that she doesn't care about her life. She thinks to be useless.
Subaru gives her a reason to feel useful.
She isn't really out from her depression even if she thinks Subaru saved her from it.

After making her feel like she actually mattered, she developed co-dependency. This is what happens when you show a girl with zero self-confidence and self-worth interest.
>>
>>144791842
Shit writing.
>>
>>144798334
Actually, now that I think about it, she didn't develop co-dependency then, she was previously co-dependent on her sister until Subaru showed up.
>>
>>144791842
Seriously, if Subaru was female, she would act the same way (minus the sexual attraction). I mean to say simply she has not any reason to live. She needs to protect someone to give a meaning to her existance. But despite what she thinks, she is still depressed as hell.
>>
>>144792653
>It draws a parallel with Subaru, who was willing to sacrifice his life for someone he knew for a day
>
>Both their targets of affection/obsession gave their own lives meaning

incorrect.

Subaru is acting out of his own sense of self satisfaction. His actions are selfish and self centered.

REM however is acting out of a sense of self sacrifice. She loves subaru, however she also thinks she's unworthy of love of any type, due to her sister and he reaction to what happened to her sister, ultimately she's a martyr without a cause, and she takes this situation as a chance to die saving someone she loves as a form of atonement for past sins.

Subaru would never make this choice. Even when he reached Emilia his words betrayed his thoughts "lets run away, everything will work out somehow if we get away from here, in a few days you'll see i'm right"

Notice, he never once tells her whats coming, he doesn't think to evacuate the town or anyone else, He's not even thinking of killing himself to bring back REM. in his mind all of that is sacrificial to the elf pussy he thinks karma threw to him when he transported to this other world. He's still stuck thinking this is one of those light novels he reads, where he was sent here to be a hero, and Emilia is the heroine who the heavens arranged for his dick

This arc is about breaking subaru of all of these conceits. he's still not there yet. it's the conversation with the one armed bro that finally gets the hamster wheel spinning. (when he learns one armed bro was summoned from japan too once upon a time, and nope, no hero from other world, sexy girl for him, just pain and suffering, it makes him realize RANDOM FUCKING PEOPLE can be transported without some overarching plot or guardian deity taking a hand, and removes from him his illusion that he's "special"

She is really miserable.

>>
>>144799079

>>
>>144799022

But there are. Almost every summer we hear news about people who died to save someone (stranger) who was drowning for example.
>>
>>144799079

>implying they do it for money
If you want to get rich you don't become a firefighter you dumb fuck, you do it because you enjoy what you do to some degree.

You can also ignore all the war hero stories, or the common stories of people saving others from natural disasters and sometimes even dieing for it because you are a little contrarian.
>>
>>144799047
Sure they RISk their lives but they don't generally kill themselves to save someone else
>>
>>144799123

Considering rem's personality, at this point even if she simply thought subaru is a nice person, without feeling any special affection, she would die for him, since she gives a shit about her own life.
>>
>>144799168
>>144799127
I'm not disagreeing, but what percentage of the population do those people make up?

>>144799123
She has no professional obligation to do that, though.
>>
>>144799252

You are trying to invalidated rem's sacrifice as a real thing while trying to adhere to "how many people do it irl" as if a low number of occurrences would make it a non-credible thing
If you want to play that game, sure then answer me how many people sacrifice themselves to save subaru in the anime?
>>
>>144799252
Emily asked her to take care of him
and she love him.
Professional and personal reason to do what she did.
>>
>>144799252

Anon. She doesn't care about her life. That's all. What do you need to know more than this? It's not like she loved her life so much before, and suddenly she decided she would die for this guy. Now she has at least a reason to die in a useful way, according to her point of view.
>>
>>144799345
True, in her case there's also the professional reason.
>>
>>144799343
There's a definite difference between running into a burning building to try and save someone trapped inside or jumping into a lake to try and save a drowning person and jumping off a moving vehicle to fight a monster the size of a skyscraper to give somebody else a chance to escape.

Maybe you didn't notice because it's rather subtle. But this is what Rem was thinking:
"Love is the one thing that we're capable of perceiving that transcends dimensions of time and space. Maybe we should trust that, even if we can't understand it. All right Rem. Yes, the tiniest possibility of seeing Subaru again excites me. That doesn't mean I'm wrong."
It was love. Love made Rem sacrifice herself.

How beautiful is that? It is a deconstruction of the fantasy genre exploring the complexity of the characters.
The relationships were really fleshed out, showing the deeply rooted bond they shared which ties to MC's dark mysterious past.
>>
>>144791842
It's self insert anime, what did you expect?
>>
>>144791842

Man, that sentence is really depressing. It's not romantic shit. It's a simple sign of deep depression.
>I believe I was born for this very moment
basically she thinks her life has some meaning only when she sacrificed herself for someone, otherwise it is worthless.
>>
>>144792653
There's certainly a parallel, but I think Rem is meant to be viewed as the more heroic of the two at this point. Rem clearly is kind of fucked up mentally and emotionally, but she's still someone Subaru could learn a thing or two from.
>>144798495
>it's the conversation with the one armed bro
Why did they cut this? It struck me as being pretty important, even if the mystery wouldn't be explored for a long time.

Subaru spent at least a month in the mansion after the dogs, they got plenty of interactions, and even before that all he did was pretty valid for her:

>Saved her life twice
>Saved the children and showed selflessness
>Showed her she can value herself more and not feel bad about it, self esteem boost
>Interacted with her plenty, helped each other and even pampered and praised her because he felt like it
>Addressed the smell and they talked about it later after the whole mess was done with
>One of the few figures in her life to show care for her aside from her sister, and her now diseased parents
>>
>>144799819
Well, she lives a life where she was never first in anyone's heart. Even Ram would probably put a scumbag like Roswaal above her. She was never treated in a way that made her feel like her life had some inherent value of its own, as her family mostly told her it was okay even if she couldn't do anything, and she thinks her sister would probably be better off if she was never born.

Even when she falls in love with someone who makes her feel like her life had some value and helped someone, she comes to find that second place is still the best she can hope to manage no matter how much of herself she puts into it. When she decides to keep at it and makes a bit of progress, some fucker ends up putting her in a coma.

Rem probably doesn't think anyone would miss her if she was gone, and the truth of the matter is that she's mostly right.
>>
>>144798808
yes, but again this is out of conceit. He's still thinking of "showing off" for emilia how important, amazing and kind he is by thinking about saving the towns folk.

Listen, the cultists are tough oponents, I'm not saying the result would be much different if he warned everyone. But instead of being slaughtered unprepaired and unarmed giving people a chance to fight back would really blunt the damage done by the cultist. Heck, just have them fleeing to the estate would have given them more of a fighting chance then leaving them unwarned in the town and the estate basically empty (and also unwarned)

Subaru isn't really thinking about anyone but the elf pussy he thinks is his karmic reward for transporting here. So of course he is not going to warn the town or organize a last stand when flight becomes impossible. instead he wants to flee out of the back door with emilia cause once she has NO ONE to depend on except for him she HAS to start to ride the dick then.
>>
>>144798495
Doesn't matter.

Rem is poorly written and so is Subaru. Nobody is so stupid to believe that they're the protagonist of anything. A girl wouldn't sacrifice herself for a guy she knew for a week.

It's not realistic, it's bad writing for the sake of driving the story. They're poorly written and unrealistic because otherwise the author wouldn't be able to write his shit series.

Then kys
>>
Why did Romeo and Juliet suicide for each other despite barely ever even fucking interacting?

>>
>>144801056
rem is plausible, though unlikely. in reality her type of character probably would be a bit more clingy and jealous. people who think they're unlovable tend to grasp onto any type of affection like they would a lifeline. Still some people DO have martyr complexes. However, those types usually are a little more upfront about it.

she's not a realistically written character, but I can live with it, because she still is a rational character (as in I can grasp her martyr complex, and believe it's possible to kill herself for someone she loves as a form of atonement, they built up enough of a backstory for her I can live with her personality contradictions and swallow them a bit easier).
>>
>>144801136
There's also the fact that Rem values herself poorly, so to her, being able to sacrifice herself so Subaru can live is a big honor to her.

Subaru clearly doesn't think the same, but her inferiority complex runs all the way to her childhood, so of course it's not going to get dealt with in the month he spent in the mansion interacting with her. She just moved her hopes into him, and that bloomed into love.
>>
>>144801233
She does cling to him a lot. In the light novel after the dogs she keeps bugging him to praise her after she does something right, and to pet her head.
>>
>>144801272

Well she was straining herself all her life to "make up" to her sister for what she thought and for believing she would never leave up to her, so when she finally let all that out by talking to Subaru and he accepted her and told her it was ok to value herself more, he became sort of a emotional pillar for her, and she later fell in love with him.

She was also sheltered most of her life, so her acting like that is understandable.

>A girl wouldn't sacrifice herself for a guy she knew for a week.
Well, the dog hunting thing was tied to the massive guilt trip she put herself through, where the whole thing could have been avoided if she hadn't hesitated to help him. This reminded her of the time when she smiled at her sister's horn loss, and she had a similar reaction in the end. She tried to make up for it. She would try to never show the same mistrust or envy that she faulted herself for.
>>144801233
Well, someone already mentioned that she is pretty clingy. There's actually a point where she tries to slip something into Subaru's tea, but accidentally gives it to Emilia instead. However, I think she probably deliberately represses much of her jealousy because of the whole incident with her sister.

After all these years, I've come to accept that /a/ cannot into tragedy, with the recent influx of false flaggers from other websites Sure, the writing is far from great, but the points they rant about can be legitimately understandable if they put their minds to it. They want everything fed to their mouth and they want the works to be adapted to their train if thought, which is by the way disconnected from reality or common sense from staying at home swimming in the product of their endless fap sessions. The very purpose of a work is to get the viewer's mind to adapt itself to it, to influence it. What they are asking for is pandering and they get flustered when they cannot masturbate to philosophy shit that gives them the impression of being clever.
