Because the idea of "tanoshii duel" became something forced on others instead of it being a thing that the protagonists fight to protect against from being destroyed. It started with Yusei screaming about KIZUNA and NAKAMA and it essentially got worse from there.

It didn't have that much to go with due to how long the Synchro arc was leaving a few missed opportunities. But as for as it was the XYZ arc somewhat okay to a degree, just lacking in a lot of areas. To be honest if both Synchro and Xyz where both split into 25 episodes each from Spring 2015 towards 2016 or Xyz being 15 episode it would have been a lot better.

Yusei is not the most talked about in any community. Yugi/Atem are and after that it's not clear. Judai gets a lot of talk and hate, Yuma gets a lot of hate, Yuya gets talked about because his show is current and Yusei gets talked about because 5Ds is seen as the mature and edgy series.

Because Judai is a well developed character who had people push against him and his ideals without wavering on their own. Judai fought actual fucked up people like possessed Saiou, Cobra, Yubel, Amon's fucked up attitude, Darkness etc. Yuya fights people who bend to his will after a single duel and no one is allowed to be evil in Arc-V. No one. No one has good motives for anything they do and follow this almost faceless leader who hasn't done shit all series. No one really has a backstory so we can understand their motives or anything about them as characters. They are just there to lose to Yuya and validate anything he says.

No one cares about Black Magician Girl as a monster. She isn't supposed to be run in Black Magician Decks. Black Magician is fine right now. He's playable.

Neos doesn't send people into fits of rage. The same few posters do that for whatever reason. Neos had shine back in GX but is bad now and doesn't get support.

Stardust is as good as the format calls for it to be good. When destruction is heavy, synchro decks will run it. When it isn't it, goes into a binder.

Hope was ran before Lightning. He was a staple in early to mid Zexal. Stopping two attacks with a pretty big body was great.

Odd-Eyes is decent and ran in Pendulum decks for the search power. It rarely sees the field but can help in pushing for game if it does.

Cards get power creeped. They can't stay good forever so it makes sense for them to be bad years after they came out. That's a stupid complaint.

pegasus: remained a solid, consistent threat throughout the entirety of duelist kingdom. constantly mocked yugi, absolutely tore him down right down to the end. 8/10

malik: remained a consistent, if non-appearing threat through the entirety of battle city. However, his upgraded form was kinda crap, he would have lost to mai if not for chant bullshit, and he would have lost to jo if not for coma bullshit, so he didn't feel very strong himself. 6/10

bakura: masterminding a fuckton of shit in the long run, bakura maintained the feeling of a constant threat through the entirety of the series, and it paid off in the end. 9/10

kagemaru: the seven stars were far more threatening, and his appearance and duel was a wet fart after sitting on the toilet straining for an hour. 2/10

saiou: remained consistently threatening through the entirety of season 2, brainwashing some of judai's closest friends and successfully wreaking havoc. his final duel was also impressive and the space shenanigans was great. 8/10

yubel: while initially setting things up from the shadows, once she started directly influencing things, she became a consistently terrifying threat, MCing judai's lover, completely demoralizing him to the point he became a villain for a bit, and in the end, she not only didn't lose to judai, but she achieved her endgame of being united with judai forever. 9.5/10

nightshroud/darkness/trueman: a truly terrifying villain, but set in a season that was rather weak altogether. still, darkness himself was solid and maintained a constant threat, successfully wiping out fucking EVERYONE. 9/10

If Roger and Vector get points for being entertaining, I'd say Marik could get like a .5 bump. I don't really see anything I'd notably disagree with.

I actually did feel for Aporia and Bruno as they concluded their arcs in Ark Cradle arc, and Bruno's death was one of the sadder ones in the franchise imo. But it took a fucklong time to even get there, and a lot of it was Placido faffing about ineffectively, so I think a ~6 is fair.

The only other character Roger had some kind of notable contrast with was with Reiji. And Reiji himself saw relatively little action in Synchro, so it's not like that amounted to much.

A lot of Yugioh villains (the ones that were favorably remembered) worked because they had some kind of meaningful connection and/or contrast with the main protagonists that added more depth and interest beyond

>this is a good guy
>this good guy must stop bad guy or else he will continue to do bad things

This isn't even just a Yugioh thing, it's a general storytelling and shounen thing. Going

in an attempt to invalidate and drag down past villains to bolster a mostly forgettable and mediocre-at-best antagonist like Roger isn't going to fool anyone.

Reiji doesn't go on diatribes about his yami no kokoro and was still more interesting than Roger when he was an obstacle rather than just another nakama.

Also, Pegasus was as cartoony and hammy as anyone's going to get, and was better than Roger. It's not a free pass to having the depth of a puddle when the guy is supposed to be the major antagonist of a 50 episode arc.
