I just finished the original series the other day and I liked it a lot. The Chuunin exams were great. I skipped the filler so the only thing I didn't like was that every time someone said something that could be related to something that happened earlier they flashed back to it. That was annoying.

Quick question, one of the earlier themes in the series is that a ninja is strongest when they have something to protect and yet the only members of the main cast to score an undisputed victory against a member of Akatsuki without outside interference were Gai and Shikamaru. (Sasuke and Naruto don't count because Deidara had Sasuke dead to rights and Pain and Itachi were holding back.) Was that concept just forgotten or did the Akatsuki have something greater to protect than the main cast?

Pain Arc is easily the best arc out of the whole series. It's on a completely different level. I'd rate the whole Naruto series around a 6-7/10 but Pain Arc is 9/10 easily.
