I disagree. I think this was always the trajectory of the story. Where we're at in Berserk is basically where we'll be at in Game of Thrones once the white walkers are knocking at the door. We've always been headed here, ever since the eclipse. Eventually the politics of the world would no longer be relevant. It's all just been the petty bickering of humanity while the true threat was growing right under their noses.

What's more, while Berserk has let go of the politics of humans in exchange for build a new world, it has also focused more intently on character than ever before, rigorously developing not only Guts but also Farnese.

I'm gonna be honest, I'm still not totally sure why Farnese is such an important character. She has a more fleshed out store than anybody other than Guts and maybe Griffith. It could be argued that she is a totem representing all of humanity in this world, sheltered, pampered, deranged, delusions of grandeur. But when the truth was in front of her eyes she eventually accepted it, shed her illusions, and embraced the reality of the world, showed true inner strength in pursuing truth and real strength, real value.

Anyway, maybe Berserk is shit now, maybe it was best when there was more political intrigue, but all I know is I wouldn't give up Farnese's story for anything.

Guts has matured. Sure, he can still fly into a berserker rage when he needs to, but he's also not so easily provoked, not so hot-headed. He has learned to recognize the important things in his life other than revenge. Before he fought for money, or glory, or for Griffith. But now he has about gotten to the point where he's not going to pick up his sword unless somebody absolutely forces him to.

It's perfectly in line with Guts personal character development journey. The most obvious turning point was probably when he almost raped Casca, but as in all good character development, it happened slowly and gradually.

Like, it's obvious that Guts acts in a cool, stoic and kind manner now, but if you look back to the black swordsman arc and the golden age arc you really go "huh, he really changed didn't he?"

This also puts Griffith in a good juxtaposition to Guts. Like any good villain, Griffith is what Guts could have become if Guts had been weaker. Once they were both young men with great talent and ambition. Both encountered great obstacles in their career, and they reacted differently to them.

Where Guts deals with failure and loss in a mature manner and accepting that he is a flawed person, Giffith rages. Griffith pushed responsibility onto other people for his own failures and enacted "payback" on them for "betraying" him. While Guts recognizes his mistakes and matures as a person, Griffith denies his mistakes and just digs himself a deeper pit. I mean, if you look at Griffith now compared to how he was at the start of the golden arc, you realize he's become a fucking manchild. How did he soar to greater heights? By fucking everyone else rather than improving himself. Not to mention he takes petty revenge on Rickon for a petty slight (yeah, Griffith didn't need to command anyone to try and murder Rickon, but a man like Griffith can't be unaware of the fact that his followers would try to take revenge in his stead, and he did literally nothing to hinder them).

its been my personal theory for a while now that the reason Farnese has gotten such a large amount of characterization is because the behelit that guts is carrying is actually hers. It just makes sense from a storytelling perspective that the character we have the best picture of how they think would be given such a difficult choice.

How this would actually go down in the story idk other than than Serpico would probably be the sacrifice.

Storywise he did it, because he once saved Casca from rape. She then created a new identity for herself where she would stand for herself, but fight for Griffith.
Of course Griffith lives on admiration and his whole deal is to have people rally behind him. Then when Guts showed up, for the first time, Griffith admired somebody else and almost considered him his equal. Then Guts gained his independence by defeating Griffith and Casca's admiration slowly shifted to Guts as well. Griffith during the eclipse not only wants to spite Guts, he tries to destroy everything he created: The Band of the Hawk, Casca's identity, his friendship with Guts. He does so to distance himself from who he was before becoming a member of the Godhand.
