>>
>>144668346
Reading is far more important than studying vocab in isolation. While it's never too early to start kanji study, Japanese isn't written in individual characters and hasn't been for centuries (nor has Chinese, for that matter). There are enormous areas of grammar and usage that you're missing by not reading actual sentences.
>>
>>144668929
I know ;_;
How awful was my translation and what does the sentence really mean though?
>>
>>144668825
I had to mount it to install and when I try to run it from there I get blocked by the software, and If I run it from it's folder it just gives a failure dialog box.

>>
>>144669445

>>
>>144669481
You don't have to know how to write kanji to be able to read japanese. People don't study kanji to know kanji, they study kanji to remember vocabulary.
>>
>>144669481
Damn, if that's the case then I can't believe I've been studying for over a year and only know like 5 kanji.
>>
>>144667581

Cute. Don't worry about broken Japanese, worst case scenario someone makes fun of you for it.

And that's very short-sighted thinking. Being able to produce a word, either by writing, saying or visualizing it, greatly improves retention.
>>
>>144670923
You're missing his point.

Just discovered the grammar bit, 上では.

Any others that are fairly simple, but not often pointed out?
>>
>>144671168
I suppose that depends on how you want to define "know". If reading alone is good enough for you, then I guess you know enough.

Lately I've been getting tired and bored of Core 2k6k, it's barely showing me any new kanji and mostly just words composed of kanji I already know, some of which are pretty obvious. Should I stop new cards and dedicate "full-time" to mining? I've been doing a mining deck since about a month ago, though I limited new cards to 10 a day since I already have Core at 20 and also DoJG at 10 (now it's 7).

Guy from earlier. Yes, Go! Go! Nippon! does have a JP-only text setting. It is a bitch to hook since neither ITH or ITHVNR cooperate but if you screw around with VNR for a while you can get a semi-decent hook. It messes up on very short lines but that's all right because typically those are easy to read anyway.

Would not recommend for a first or second VN but if anyone here wanted to give it a try, it's possible.

using manga for reading practice was a mistake

now that I've spent some time reading through a VN I realize how vastly superior and quicker it is as a learning tool
the voice acting also helps with listening comprehension; the fact that you move through dialogue at your own pace makes it a good alternative to anime, J-dramas, and baseball

Dan is in this case "brigade" or maybe "team".

Everybody but one guy tried to help out, you guys rock. The main problem I have is that her handwriting is for shit (the idea is that she halfasses things and just throws signs together with whatever marker is lying around and is a spaz in a hurry). It's kind of crammed together. So it's not exactly easy for me to even identify all of it.

Obviously I have torn the source material apart as I mentioned. There is no episode where they ever detail the text on her signs, you have to get it from context.

As it happens, that sign is not in fact one she used in the anime or novels, so it's good that somebody answered me. It's unique to the figure. Yare yare...

Thanks sempai.

It's literally some of the clearest handwriting I've ever seen, the equivalent of block capitals.

I told you to just watch the fucking show because you'd have to be braindead to not just understand what it said from context. The club needs more members, she makes a sign, what could that sign possibly say?

I'm saddened that people decided to help someone as clearly retarded and delusional as you, but there are a lot of beginners trying to prove themselves and they'll jump on anything that requires 2 seconds of work to brag.

I'm sorry your overrated elite skills don't extend to reading English, or at least not with useful comprehension. Every point you tried to raise was already covered, pay attention or shut the fuck up, mad guy. Case in point: I didn't ask for the jist of it as mentioned. I asked for help with a translation, which more skilled people than your aspie self managed to provide without much trouble. Literally everything you said is either empirically wrong, full of unwarranted self-importance, and delusional unearned confidence in your skill, verteran status here (lol) and lack of self-awareness...4chan Japanese failure guy.

Forgot to do my reviews for the first time in nearly two years. Luckily, I did 10~ or so in the early morning so it didn't ruin my streak in the stats themselves.
I haven't done new cards in months. Maybe it's time I just finally stop using anki. There comes a point where switching to all-exposure for vocabulary acquisition is natural. Maybe this is that point.
>>
>>144681434
How many words you got?
>>
>>144681434
The reviews per day will slow down to like 50 and you can do them any time you go take a shit. Might as well keep going, maybe delete some decks like core 2k/6k if you have them, since you're going to see those words often enough that you won't forget them at this point anyway.

Whenever I am online I always try to answer, even if it's basic, unless someone else does it first.
And I'm around here about 16h/day, so yeah, no.

Maybe the sarcastic replies you get aren't really sarcastic?

I haven't been reviewing Core2k/6k anyway. That's my mining deck. I know it's best to keep doing it, but I'm speaking psychologically here. I've spent over two years thinking "I have to do anki" literally every day. Back in m heyday I even planned my day around it, making sure to do my reps before leaving anywhere, or being sure to synch my phone so I could duck out of a party to rep. Dropping anki, while not actually helping all that much, would be immensely psychologically relieving.

That's arguable, but I don't think it's wrong. It's not a literal translation, so I think that's also a "good" translation.

I'm saying this because of the って so I think it feels more natural like that.

I'd translate that as "I-it's not like I meant they built it for real you know?" and you'll figure english is not my primary language right away.
>>
>>144682841
It's not arguable. It's not a literal or a liberal translation, it's just wrong. It's hard to tell from your translation but if you meant "for real" as in "they didn't built it in reality, because this is a metaphor" then you're wrong too.

Not that they didn't built, but that they didn't seriously worked their asses (and died) for it.

This complements the previous sentence saying they died to build it, but not that he meant they were so serious about it to die for it, so isn't "I don't mean it literally" a fitting choice?

No, because in that TL that means "they didn't literally expend their lives", not "they didn't seriously work their asses" or what have you. It conveys different ideas and thus is wrong.

I've taken unfortunately long breaks before, and I always find stuff comes back to me after a day or two of studying. Doing fifteen hundred anki reps to get back on track is usually the hard part. It's much easier to re-learn something than it is to learn it the first time.
>>

>>144689396
there is always someone willing to translate, usually for free. the most popular works always get translated, only the niche of the niche works do not get translated. what I'm saying is, there is no "need" to learn japanese. you are doing it because it's fun, or whatever. but there is no need to learn it, so eventually you might get bored of japanese works and because you don't live in japan no one around you speaks it and so you don't use the language and eventually you just forget everything.
>>
>>144690097

Learning conjugation rules as some of your first lessons are a waste of time. You won't be able to produce properly for a long time anyway so you might as well study them a couple months in or whenever you want to produce for real, that way you'll easily remember them.

There is obviously more than one way to learn, but there really is no way to get around the fact that you'll have to put in a lot of boring hours into studying grammar. Telling someone that they shouldn't study it doesn't really help as they will eventually have to do it if they want to get anywhere. I think the sooner you start the better, but to each his own.

Hanahira is the go-to recommendation for a reason. It is relatively short, has easier Japanese than everything else (possibly easier than Yotsuba) and hooks easily with no weird issues. >>144704310
寝られないと can also mean "you gotta sleep" though, the いけない is just implied

寝ない

>JCAT was a worthwhile experience for me because it made me realize how shit I am at Japanese.
I scored intermediate even though ive only read Yotsuba, Hanahira, and Flyable Heart. If anything it gave me an inflated sense of 出来る
>>
>>144704310
This sounds suspect

There's no "difference in nuance" cause they're totally different.

One thing that usually happens is that ないと is sometimes used an the abbrev. form of ないといけない, same as なくては for なくてはいけません and you can only get that from context.

But as usual assume it's simply ない + と giving an "if" sense to it.

but what inspires you to say one over the other is what i think hes asking

You can hover over the vocab in Tae Kim and it tells you what it is. You don't even need rikai.

All Tae Kim requires is that you know kana.

If you've read 2 VNs, then you probably are intermediate. I got high intermediate after reading the same as you plus Satsukoi.

It wasn't the results that made me realize I was shit at Japanese, it was the feeling I got when I was taking the test. The feeling of not really understanding anything. But it is an adaptive test, so maybe everyone feels that way when they take it.
>>
>>144704619
And that's what separates the dekirus from the dekidonts
>>
>>144704750
Only? Are you sure? I'm almost done with my first real VN but I honestly don't feel like I'm progressing in terms of ability, sometimes even simple grammar stumps me.

Beginners can't read visual novels, therefore if you have read a VN, you are at least intermediate.

>>144705042

Yes, I always trust people who don't use capital letters or punctuation.

Everyone can read a visual novel with a text hooker.
>>
>>144705151
pressing enter until the credits doesnt mean you read a vn
>>
>>144705042
Can you actually use English or is your experience limited to low quality バイト?
>>
>>144705176
Then everyone can become intermediate.

>>144705187
And turning pages until you reach the end doesn't mean you read a book. But that doesn't change the fact that if you've read a VN, you are intermediate or higher.
