Really? As long as it's anime it's fine. We don't have nearly enough threads talking about/teaching/appreciating the technical aspects of this medium and it can be pretty cool stuff.

That particular webm? Because it shows the brutality of war. In animation, especially when the show first ran, that was huge. It's also interesting in the context of a space ship, and when you consider how small the damage actually is when looking at the battle as a whole. How many ships were destroyed like that? How many men died?

Pretty basic questions, but the brutality gets under my skin, even now when we are supposed to be numb to animated blood.

I think they wanted to show that for all their bravery in going out to fight war in space the ships were basically just futuristic triremes that ram into each other and kill indiscriminately, messily and mercilessly in the process
>>
>>144673357
phantom world had great animation but the anitwitter sakugafags refused to watch it because
>not muh kyoani
some retard even wrote an article on why kyoani was so special just before the pw premiere. nobody took them seriosly after that.
>>
>>144673748
Eh, some of them are a bunch of faggots who get easily offended but Phantom World webms were pretty well-liked on sakugabooru. Anyway, as long as those few sensitive fags keep their opinions on twitter then I can deal with it. It's not like their nonsense prevents /a/ from having sakuga threads.

sure, because the sakugabooru is actually for animation, sakuga threads were just for circlejerking and shitposting. without the anitwitter fags, there was no circlejerk, no shitposting, and sakuga threads were just just like this one, mere webm dumps.

If you're into action animation, some episodes are worth it for the animation alone. At the very least the three episodes directed by Atsushi Wakabayashi in the pre-timeskip series are a must-watch for any animation fan. It's a great showcase of action animation, and arguably one of the finest in anime.

Can someone explain the 1s, 2s, 3s thing to me? I can roughly surmise it has something to with frames but a better understanding would be appreciated.
>>
>>144686038
1s 2s and 3s are the terms for how many frames a single drawing stays on screen for.

2's and 3's are used for budget and to animate weight
>>
>>144686038
24 video frames per second. that doesn't mean they draw 24 distinct frames per second. 1s is when they do, 2s when it's effectively 12fps etc.

This can get a little trickier when foreground, camera shake, background and sfx are change on different frames. E.g. you can have overall distinct frames at 24fps but each layer is actually just at 12 or 8fps, just offset from each other.

There also is some nice infographic for that, but I can't find it right now.

It's fairly obvious if you frame-step through some action scene.
>>
>>144685664
>>144685717
That is indeed something I made, shortly before I gave up completely.
I did quite a bit of research and spend a lot of time experimenting and reading into the technical side of traditional animation, it's really interesting.
But the thing is, I lack creativity, moreso than any normal person and lacking any kind of natural talent for drawing too the amount of effort it takes for me to reach any level above simple flipbook animation is just more than I can stomach, aka, I'm lazy.
I was lucky to have autism on my side, that definitely helps with the patience but with zero creativity, the chances of making it in the animated film field is also zero, maybe I made the mistake of trying to go for that instead of keeping it as a fun hobby.

Anyway, I hoped to find some more guys over here who were into animating themselves too, it's definitely interesting.

And I really appreciate the kind comments.

>animating completely on 1's looks unnatural
That's because Japanese key animators aren't trained to do full animation so they just animate just as they would do on 3s and have the inbetweener fill in the blank.

Japanese animator also use "hold" a lot so it makes the short burst of smooth animation look even more awkward. Disney rarely used hold and they got rid of it altogether even they switched to 3D.

Because they're keeping each still on screen for 3 full Frames. The Human eye can individually identify single frames up to around 35 frames per second. This isn't that 'You can only see 30fps" meme, but a threshold at which you become unable to pick out one single Frame from another. That Webm is effectively using less than a third of that due to being animated on 3's. Each frame is duplicated three times.

Only the ending is strange; the rest is just a chase scene in a very standard 80s anime universe, but a well done and fun chase scene.

Honestly the ending felt like a "we have no idea how to end this so here's some bullshit" thing, but I can't help but feel there's something really funny about a dumb unimportant comedy character getting pissed and causing the end of the world.

because sakugabooru is mostly run by basic bitches (I mean fuck yuycow is the admin) and they don't include character acting or generally anything that's not over the top unless it's in some famous animator's sakugawiki entry

Their pozzed anitweetcru celebs deleted multiple webms I posted of good animation, even ones that were well-received and upvoted by the userbase, because it wasn't le epic enough
>>
>>144703125
I agree that the people who run sakugabooru are a bunch of sjw circlejerking faggots but they have rules in place for what's to be considered sakuga or not, and iirc one of their big no-nos is webms like those who have a 2+second pause between each movement, they tell you to either cut the part are just static frames or flapping mouths or don't upload at all.

>>

Neither are subtle moments of character animation

This sucks so much. The inbetweens don't follow the flow of the key animation so the hand changes direction in a very unnatural way from one key frame to the other. Not only is the key animation here bad, since the flow of the hand is already skewed even without the inbetweens, but the tweens themselves also fail to hide that skewed motion.
>>
>>144686973
that actually looks great
>>
>>144687302
holy fucking rotoscope

>>
>>144704962
There's a difference between "a spectacle" (where the animation is meant to be the focus of the scene) and the flashy stuff you're talking about. The Mob webm is clearly just meant to be a transition, unimportant but to bridge scenes, whereas the ATLA scene was an action scene, clearly meant to be the focus.

The Mob webm is well animated and I do think it should be allowed on the booru but I can understand the logic behind deleting it.

I find it funny when people remark about sameface and big heads. Like, have you even seen one single anime before? I guarantee the same could be said about your favorite show.
>>
>>144693288
With so much stretch before it hits the ground it feels like it's been shot out of something. I know you were probably going for anticipation, but try it without or at least put that frame way closer to the ground.
>>
>>144705847
Nobody looks remotely the same in Gao Gai Gar retard.
>>
>>144686114

Why do you think you have no creativity?
>>
I think there is a very obvious distinction between cuts that are storyboarded specifically to show off animation, and cuts that are storyboarded to portray characters' mannerisms and character acting, which can then turn out to have lots of movement. The difference is modesty. The kind of cuts that just wants to show off will look very ridiculous and exaggerated, but the cuts that are focused on character acting will look more natural even when there's a lot going on on screen.

For example, this scene >>144685348 looks like they obviously storyboarded it to show off animation but they fell flat with the key animation. Even when there isn't all that much movement, it still looks ridiculous because the animation didn't live up to what the storyboarder hoped would be a dope cut.

Scenes like these >>144688131 >>144683371
are what it looks like when a cut is storyboarded for the acting instead of showing off, and the animator is good enough to properly animate it modestly.

When a cut is storyboarded for the acting, but the animator either wants to show off, is cocky, or just inexperienced with character acting, you'll end up with a cut that can look kind of ridiculous as well. Example here >>144684427

>had significantly better looking characters than 2.
I feel like this is a detail that goes really underappreciated whenever it gets mentioned. Not only is the film's color palette significantly more muted than the previous movie's, it goes out of its way to change most of the character's faces to a more realistic style in order to show how disillusioned everyone is. It's a really great way of communicating the series' shift in tone, and I don't think I've ever seen it done anywhere else.
>>

It's a fairly standard looping background animation scene. Busterbeam, you've been watching too much Dezaki where you'd accept anything with good layouts and posing but with with barely functional animation. I see it in your recent uploads to the booru.

It's closer to roughly 75-100 depending on the individual. Generally speaking, when watching a medium, our brains tend to fill in the missing frames if its too low as a sort of neurological interpolation in order to match it closer to real life. Which is why watching movies and film in 60 FPS seems far too uncanny.
