What I do is just open it up in MS Paint and then just resize the image so that it kinda fits in the square, then I manually reduce the size to fit it. Itll seem grainy up close but when u post it or see it at normaly distance itll look fine

When you analyze Gyro's journey in SBR, you see it's really not much about Marco at all. He hardly ever talks about the kid, and Marco has absolutely no personality to warrant our interest as viewers, because he's a plot device. A plot device that gives Gyro an excuse to go on an adventure and prove his father was wrong and that he can be effective without sacrificing his human side. Hence why he gets so involved in Ringo's "True Man's World" phylosophy. He wants self-improvement. He wants to prove he was right and his dad was wrong. Marco is just an excuse.

And a recurring theme in SBR is Gyro, introduced to the viewers as practically invincible, constantly losing despite his incredible skills, because his mind is unfocused. Johnny says so himself. Gyro's chasing a solution by running away from the problem. His character development in SBR is finding his own strength by teaching Johnny, and, in the final battle, after having gone through all that he did and having perfected the "Spin!, his mistake agaisnt Valentine costs him his life, but it allows Johnny to defeat Valentine (who is a bit of a parallel to Gregorio Zeppeli).

Gyro failed on his mission for his country and he failed to protect the kid, but he succeeded in proving that he was right all along (since his mentality and perfected abilities allowed Johnny to defeat Valentine) and he grew out of his self-doubts.

Marco's death is a punctuation of said loss, and how it doesn't even matter. You don't even remember Marco by that point. You remember Gyro's spirit passing on without regrets and his heroic sacrifice and teachings to Johnny

Alright it's time to confess, I like Kars. Before you assault me with your keyboards and reaction pics hear me out. Although on the surface Kars seems like a superficial villain with no concrete motive for being evil, I've reviewed this and come up with a few key things. I believe Kars as a whole is a metaphor for man's struggle to conquer death, the desire to play God. Giving up everything, your friends and allies, your time and effort and even killing off the remainder of your species all to become "perfect." It reminds me of man's unquenchable thirst for more, better and faster- the blindness of cost only seeking the result. I think Kars plays this symbolic role very well, killing his species and giving up his last allies. Whether or not Araki was going for this angle idk but it gives me a reason to like him much more and adds a lot to his character.

On the note of fan art, Kars is just sexy, muscular, hair that defies physics, those eyelashes and eyeshadow. When I first saw it... how can I say this... I got a boner. Who do you think is sexiest villain?

You know what, even if I think Kars is objectively the worst villain and a bit of failed execution of a good concept, I do believe the character has depth to him. I don't consider him to be a metaphor for man's struggle to conquer death (he's not really a metaphor) but the character is based around the concept of betrayal, and backstabbing the viewer's expectations. It's why he has the whole "saves animals" things and why the Pillar Men have honorable principles. It was all a set-up so Kars could betray such concepts later by backstabbing Lisa Lisa and the reveal of his backstory

He's really not a bad character or villain per se and there's a lot of good stuff to him, it's just a shame he had so little presence and lost so easily.

But I do agree his design is top-tier though

I like the idea of Kars more than execution of him. If he'd had more screentime and links to the heroes (he didn't give a shit about Joseph until he killed ACDC and Wamuu, and although it made sense for his personality it pissed me off that he denied us a Lisa Lisa fight) he could've been great, certainly better off than part 1 Dio.

He seemed to have a nice relationship with the other Pillar men though, which makes sense given that him and ACDC were basically Wamuu's dads, and Santana's before they kicked him out. Interesting that Araki chose to humanize him a little in the Wamuu fight too, Kars was notably distressed and upset when Wamuu was in trouble, and though he insulted him afterwards he also immediately murdered all the vampires that did the same, so he definitely cared to an extent.

You've got good taste in men, same.

I think it was just forced characterization. I'm sure Araki saw some old anime where the villain had some redeeming quality and wanted to apply to Kars but then he forgot or didn't give a shit.
That said, I don't think he's a bad character. Villains can be assholes too for its own sake, and as you said, it betrays expectations when he turned out to be even more of an asshole.

The entirety of his (limited) screentime prior to the fight with Joseph is cultivating his personality as an opposite of Dio and how he relates to the Pillar Men, particularly his almost father-son relationship with Wham.

Even after Kars goes Ultimate and betrays the one principle he had throughout his appearences (not killing animals since he kills a squirrel) he still thinks about them. He goes after Joseph to avenge Wham and ACDC. He's probably the only main villain who truly wanted what was best to his partners.

I thought that the Squirrel-killing was either an accident (since he didn't seem to be controlling it directly, it just attacked everything except him) or him disposing of an introduced American Grey pest which competes with native Red Squirrels.

And yeah, while he talked big about how the Ultimate Being needs no partners and so on, his only acts after achieving it were to try and avenge his comrades. Makes me wonder what would've happened if he'd managed to kill Joseph, him realizing that he didn't have anything left to fight for would be interesting.

I'll explain a bit more about Kars's animal thing and why it wasn't just a random quirk.

What Araki did with Battle Tendency was give the Pillar Men principles and honour to distinguish them from Dio at Part 1, principles that Joseph acknowledges. It's actually a theme in Battle Tendency, the characters becoming stronger by gaining their respective reasons for fighting (which Joseph only gains after Cheeser dies). He establishes Kars as a dick by having him directly betray said principles in the ending.

Kars, at first, breaks tradition from the expectations for a JoJo villain since Dio literally established himself by kicking a dog, and Kars saved one and also a bunch of flowers. His personality is opposite too at first, being calm, not too interested in conflict and respectful to his allies. And we get scenes showing said good traits, mostly revolving around his interactions with other characters. The animal thing is related to that.

After Kars backstabs Lisa Lisa and proceeds to take a giant shit all over the honour and principles that his comrades abided to, and after he becomes the Ultimate Lifeform, the first thing he does is literally kill a squirrel (with his own squirrel).

And it's later explained in the Pillar Men's backstory that they respected nature's balance and wanted to kill Kars specifically because he threatened said balance. Kars saving animals is a Pillar Man thing that he respects only until he finally achieves the power to stand over all of nature, where he can promptly ignore all that.

So what breed of dog is Arnold supposed to be? Not gonna lie, i thought he was a Labrador retriever, but that's just me.

Kars's demise is directly related to that too. The moment Kars ceased to follow nature's balance, was the moment the Earth promptly spit him out into space. Where Kars can finally achieve what he wanted: to tower over all other lifeforms and to overcome his weakness of the sun.

Not that I particularly like Battle Tendency or it's ending and villains but Kars's demise and character have some depth to them that can be appreciated on a deeper level.

I admit that I think Wamuu overshadows him though, Battle Tendency's climax (for me) was when Joseph and him had finished their fantastic fight and were paying their respects to each other. It was about the only time that a major villain had been respectable and died peacefully, sometimes I wish there was more of that.

Hell, even ACDC had some level of dignity when he died. He knew he was the scum of the Earth for possessing Suzie Q and was vocally ashamed of it. When he was removed and killed, Caesar insulted him, but Joseph told him to cut it out because ACDC's immoral actions were selfless and that he'd sacrificed himself for his companions, which deserved credit even if it was evil.

And then you have Kars, who gets blasted into space and lives, and lives, and lives. Debatable as to whether he deserved it, but he definitely made his own bed.

Really nice having a civilized Pillar Men discussion here, mostly they get shit on by people who hate part 2 because animeonlies like it.

As much as they are my least favorite JoJo villains they are very, very fascinating concepts for characters with a lot of potential that was sadly wasted.
I would love to see a spin-off that would dwelve into their backstories and how they shaped the mythology of the JoJo world.

And btw, there are a few references here and there in Battle Tendency to how they shaped the world. Specifically, this carving that the SPW Foundation finds while studying Santana, the one with the horns that indicate the rankings of their societies.

Kars- you have the blade motifs, and behind his head you have the sun. His imagery is sharp and he’s depicted as the leader and most powerful. The carving has three horns, like Kars

Esidisi- the second largest, and that’s fire behind him- his powers have been carved too. You have a jewel on the head surrounded by smaller horns (ACDC had a jewel on his hat).

Wham- you can see the wind there as well, smallest in the ranking indicating his position as a younger Pillar Men, you see one single long horn similar to Wham's.

It’s so interesting because this is a carving made by the humans of the time and it’s depicting them as gods- what else would you call immortal beings with powers like that?

It's kind of hilarious to think back on his fighting-style, too. Wamuu, Kars and Esidisi all had their own personalized attacks, weapons and methods of fighting that they'd clearly practiced with a lot, whereas Santana just had his own body. His fight with Joseph was the pillar equivalent of tearing at him with his bare hands and teeth.

I don't know anon, this mix of a genuine heartfelt moment between characters with a vampire using his hair to launch himself out of a crossbow is what makes the scene to me. I can laugh and feel touched by it at the same time.

Yeah, he had a really different vibe from the rest of them. Kars, Wamuu and ACDC were powerful and dangerous assholes, but they weren't revolting and terrifying the way Santana was. Santana was much more similar to the horror-vibe that PB had, the shit he pulled was way creepier than anything Dio (or even DIO, probably) did.

I guess Santana's primitiveness made him scarier because he was so impossible to reason with. The other Pillar Men seemed pretty much human in terms of their emotions and motives, and could be spoken to and manipulated (as Joseph did) like anyone else, but Santana was having none of it.

Also this looked very horrifying and very gay.

Also I had an idea for trio of Greek Pillar Men, one who uses his nervous system for URAIGHTUNNGU MODO, another which absorbs water through the pores of his skin and can blast it out in concentrated jets by moving it through his lymphatic system, and a third who can change he skin color and flatten himself out to become nearly invisible in shadow and create hypnotizing patterns.

Guess which mythology I based these guys on.
