Because the Tenchi metaverse follow this simple rule; the male lead must be worth the women's time and effort.

In each of the Tenchi canon series, the male earns the women's affections. And because he is worth it, he gets worthy women.

Generally, if the male lead in a harem is a loser, then the only way for hot women to be interested in him is if the women themselves have critical flaws of their own. This most commonly expresses itself as blatant psychopathy. Women what are hot, but commit domestic abuse at a drop of the hat. These lead to women who would justifiably want a loser male who would stand there and get abused.

The Tenchi franchise doesn't do that. There is generally nothing wrong with the women in the Tenchi franchise. They ended up gravidating towards a man because he is worth being the father of their children. The women tend to have great carer prospects, have high social standing, and is only single because they aim high.

Tenchi Metaverse have great harems because it has great women. And it has great women because the male lead is great. It is all cause and effect. Note that the three major male leads in the franchise all have FULL TIME EMPLOYMENT. No neets here.

In Tokyo they've been living on Earth for awhile. I think everyone had a room by OVA 3 and GXP. In those spin-off hentais they hint that the Masakis have a lot of influence with the nobility, but it seems the branch families handle most of it since Yosho just deals with the shrine and many join the GP instead. That's where the backstory comes in...
The Masaki family, as per tradition, attend school IN SPACE. Most are schooled by the Galactic Police academy. This is done after they left Earth's highschool. Tenchi's Earth education was meant to be temporary. Further, Yosho had planned all along that Tenchi should be the next emperor, so what he needed wasn't schooling but combat skills. Everything went haywire when Tenchi ended up becoming a god instead. After that they left him to do what he loves, which is farming.
