It's mostly historical revisionism and dramatization meant to distinguish the "Dark Ages" from the Enlightenment.

The Catholic Church didn't actually excommunicate/arrest academics from other nations just because they published something contradictory with scripture though they did censure them occasionally.

Yeah, they have servants instead. For some reason, back in the old days, everyone except the very poor had them.
>>
>>144565499
John and his mother were the only slaves shown though, and they wanted to shoehorn Mari being kind to him as one of the reasons why Ben fought for the abolition of slavery.
>>
>>144565498
I still remember that Tom Sawyer anime.

And the John here kinda looks like the Jim there. Or maybe black kids just look the same in anime.
>>
>>144565501
I sure hope not. I've noticed a trend in Japanese fiction as a whole that they like to set rules. As in they like to introduce something then exposition dump the rules affecting its usage. I'd hate to see what car-wreck they get into with the ten commandments

>>144565499
Slavery wasn't consistent in the years from 1600-1865. The slavery most Americans would be familiar with, intense cotton farming, was only around after the invention of the spinning jenny made it possible. It was perfectly reasonable for a slave to be in that position, even at slavery's height slaves still occupied a variety of positions, not just in the field.

>>144565501

The thing about the ten commandments is that they aren't very slick. The sins show up a lot because each one is pretty dramatic. Sloth, greed, wrath, lust, envy, gluttony, pride- each one is easy to visualize, has obvious negative consequences, and yet can still work as a primary character motivation. The ten commandments, meanwhile, are full of duds like "Thou shalt remember the Sabbath and keep it holy" and "Thou shalt no take the Lord's name in vain". More complicated, more specific, less applicable to general situations. So people stick with the sins for obvious imagery. This isn't limited to Japanese shows either; if you want a great example of why the ten commandments don't work where the seven sins do watch American Horror Story's hilariously poor attempt to knock off Seven with "The Ten Commandments Killer".

>But the people getting butthurt and seceding from the British Empire were the British settlers and their descendants
So? The whole problem was that the british weren't affording them customary rights like jury trials and parliamentary representation.

The south didn't like the policy direction a majority of the country preferred. Instead of dealing with losing an election like adults, they seceded, and did so for an incredibly shitty reason, just so no one in their right mind would sympathize with them.

They really seem to have a fetish for going balls-out on horrible causes and getting their shit pushed in. I guess they like to be butthurt and have everyone dislike them for it...

As soon as states started seceding, parts of them began double seceding. They were constantly preventing their federal government from properly herding all of them (a shocker, I'm sure). They had to drag a guy away from his comfy home to be their president because none of the fucks responsible for secession actually wanted to run their shiny new country.

The worst thing the slavery supporters ever did was actually secede and start a war. Without that, slavery would've held on for god knows how long. They would've probably been left behind as the minority in the government, but no one would've actually tried to push the basic issue of abolition on slave states themselves because everyone would've been to afraid of, well, starting secession and a civil war. Sure, a few radicals would always be pushing for it, and overtime the divide would grow even more, but no one was really in a hurry to start what they all knew would be a bloodbath. Once that actually happened, they lost whatever power they had to threaten the other states to respect their position.
>>
>>144571059

They didn't secede for slavery, that was a very small part of it. It had to do with taxes, banks and laws that each side had differently.

>>144571191
Great job reading the rest of the sentence.
>>
>>144571113
Talking about Jefferson Davis, though I overstated it a bit. He was still more interested in serving militarily, rather than providentially, though, and reacted poorly to his election. He was also against secession at the time it happened, because he both knew it would lead to a war and the south wasn't going to be able to win it militarily with any sort of ease. The best chance the Confederacy ever had for winning was making themselves too much of a nuisance to deal with, just like the original Revolution.
>>
>>144570753
Well, it's just that the people butthurt about a lack of representation weren't too concerned about representation of the people who were already living there.

It can also be argued that just as the founding fathers were upset about their lack of representation, the southern states were upset by their lack of representation (as they perceived it, at least) and did the same thing for the same reasons. I don't put a great deal of stock in that, mind you, but the argument can be made.

But at the end of the day, the reason that America seceding from the Empire is acceptable and the southern states seceding from the Union isn't is because the Americans won their fight with the British and the Confederates lost theirs with the Union. Historically, rebellions are only acceptable if they end up winning.
>>
>>144570905
I'd prefer being a servant rather than working on a shitty factory.
>>
>>144571215
The "that was a very small part of it" is also wrong. Secession was triggered by the election of a President perceived as likely to force a federal abolition issue (he wasn't, as it turned out, but circumstances changed his position). Their constitution and independence documents and what not specifically mentioned the right to own slaves as being integral to their position and livelihood. When the end of the war saw the Confederacy leaders forced to seriously consider whether they would need to field black slave soldiers on a large scale to continue fighting, there was a great existential crisis over the idea.

It was about slavery, anon. Slavery was more than just the ownership of human beings, but a fundamental building stone of the entire Southern society. Everything was built on slavery and social order it imposed.

It wouldn't have hurt. The real point, though, is that the Confederacy was never going to win in a straight up clash of armies. They did well early on because the North had idiots for Generals for awhile, but that was never going to win them the war. The only way they would've won was to convince the North it would be less trouble to let them go than hang on. The Confederacy needed a couple of things to go their way to do this that ended up not materializing. Foreign support was one of those. They got close to making themselves scary enough to give the North pause when they got close to capturing the capital, but considering both were right next to each other anyway (a common bit of geographical nonsense that tends to happen), it wasn't that unknown of an issue. If I recall correctly, a lot of the most prolonged and pointless battling was between the two capitals.

The Confederacy always had way less soldiers, and eventually the North just stopped doing prisoner exchanges because they could afford to. So guerilla tactics would've been best, and some did do that even after the war. Of course, Sherman began salting the earth on his march anyway. The South just lost their will before the North did, and the North was always going to be able to batter that more than the other way around.

>>144571951
True. During the war, the market took a big hit and no one liked it, but the rest of the world was beginning to find other sources for that. The South was unable to convince foreign aid partially because, push come to shove, the rest of the economy was more willing to put them aside than prop them up.

And the industrializing world was beginning to work on these fancy new ideas called "wage slaves" and "capitalism."

Southern and Northern Slavery were dramatically different. Slavery was never as integral to society in the North and they were more a luxury than the lifeblood of the economy. Among the first settlers, the Puritans, it was greatly condemned but then in the Caribbean islands like Barbados it was completely ordinary due to the sugar cane plantations. But early slavery didn't have the distinct racial and class characteristics as there were significant indentured servant, free negro, and mixed race communities thanks to horny white women (80% of free negroes were children of white women according to some census data. Even back then no one wanted to touch a black woman.) and in most states you had the same class as your mother so you were legally white.

By the Civil War though the economic importance and demand grew dramatically leading to harsher distinctions still white people above the Mason Dixon never even interacted with the now hated Nigger outside of major cities like Boston and Philadelphia. Only 2% of all imported slaves from Africa ever lived in the Thirteen colonies. Even among the highly educated and business savvy, freed slaves in the North were still largely dependent on their former masters for working relationships at least. They would be "hired out" as servants to other houses and have legal rights but never autonomy.

I'm not sure if it was a true belief in racial equality or simply sympathy for an oppressed people that motivated most abolitionists but the vast majority who supported the Emancipation Proclamation saw it as vital to winning the Civil War. It was the Methodist and Baptist churches after the first Great Awakening that preached the equality of men in god's eyes though I think segregation was expected. They had the first black preachers. Frankly if people were aware that the Great Migration would occur, I don't think the urban North would have ever supported freeing slaves.
>>
>>144571059
I disagree. By the war slavery was already gone outside of the Americas and the actual slave trade had ended decades ago. Economically slavery could never compete with Industrialization and both the church and high society were in favor of emancipation. It was only the conservative and landed that were against it. The South could never have survived independently for long. If not for Lincoln's feelings or moral obligation to end slavery, I think the Civil War was avoidable. Still the unity of the country would be greatly affected. I don't know if it was worth all the dead young men honestly considering that equality under the law would probably arrive a generation later regardless.
>>
>>144573822
>the Emancipation Proclamation saw it as vital to winning the Civil War.
Well, considering it was a wartime measure specifically designed to weaken succeeding states without doing anything to the ones who stayed in the Union, it pretty much was.

Slavery died out because it was no longer the most economically viable option, not because of moralfag preaching.
>>
>>144571676
Eh, the West did a huge favor to the world, though. Outside of the Inca Empire, people in most places were living like savages.
>>
>>144573997
I'm not really sure what you're disagreeing with here. The only point of the post was what a shit show the Confederacy was from the beginning, and a lesson in how carefully secession needs to be handled, and how all it ended up doing for those who supported Slavery was end it sooner than it might otherwise have happened. I agree that economically slavery was dying out and this more than anything else allowed the abolitionists to get as far as they did. I would disagree that Lincoln personally caused the Civil War, especially due to his moral obligation to end slavery. From what we know, Lincoln was essentially a moderate, and unwilling to push the issue until his perception of it changed by the end of the war. Without the war, I doubt Lincoln would've pushed things as he did. It was more the fears over what he might due that ignited it.

I suppose I made it sound like war was inevitable with the radicalization bit, but that was more an acquiesce that eventually federal abolition would've become a very serious prospect legally as it became even more economically out of date. Even if people were tip toeing around it up until the Civil War. I'd also say the immediate aftermath of the war, where the North managed to pass a bunch of civil rights laws in the wake of the Southern loss and the final death throws of slavery in the US, was integral to the eventual Civil Rights movements several decades later.

While a big part of it was moral arguments, the movements worked in large part because there were laws on the books going back to the post-War period, technically already illegalizing the things they were fighting against. They had just been buried under various other technicalities and legal subterfuge.

This isn't an argument about the absolute necessity of the Civil War for civil rights in the US in all possibilities. But it's inseparable from how our history did play out. In another history, without the war, who knows what might have happened.

>he doesn't know about wireless electricity that they just figure out recently
Tesla's designs for wireless electricity were a bunch of half-baked hogwash based on the flawed understanding of electromagnetism in his time.

Don't get me wrong, Tesla was a smart man and a brilliant engineer, but he was also a half-crazed weirdo who married a pigeon and was prone to making grand, unsubstantiated claims about devices he had secret plans for, especially in his latter days.

Tesla fanboys put him up on this ridiculous pedestal and actually believe all these grand claims, and that if he weren't fucked by Edison or J.P. Morgan we'd have free infinite energy or some shit. It's basically the same people who believe alternative medicine and think that modern medicine could have cured all diseases by now, but they don't because of financial interest. He's become a symbol for blind hatred of rich people, basically.

Tesla was smart, but he was nowhere near "the greatest genius in history".

This is what all serious historians of the Middle Ages believe. The idea of the Dark Ages was essentially a hit job by Renaissance wankers to make them seem so special and cool.

Galileo's scandal wasn't because of any real religious problems, it's because Galileo was a fucking plagiarizing moron who couldn't keep his dumb fucking mouth shut and kept insulting people. He wasn't even arguing for the most up to date theory. He just got mixed up in the quagmire that was Italian politics.

The church did some fucked up shit, there's no two ways about it. But the serious divide between basic scientific theory and Christian religion is largely a Protestant problem (and largely an American problem, the place the Protestants sent the fucks they didn't even want to bother with). Catholicism long ago made its peace with science, they only quibble over the morality of birth control and what not nowadays.

Basically The Swerve is a dumb piece of shit.

Not really. It's just always had a problem with Puritans and Bible "literalists." It's a long, complicated mess with certain issues becoming more loudly discussed in the public sphere and then fading away, even if nothing as actually changed in the greater populace.

I also wouldn't take what shows up in literature as a good indicator of American attitudes. Aside from being a single person, fiction in general tends to be a hotbed on nonstandard attitudes and perceptions. It's not like evolution was once more acceptable and now less so. It's been a constant source of stupidity since it became a thing.

Edison alleges that made more than a thousand patents, but the truth is that the appropriated all the inventions and research of those who worked for him, could do so legally, but morally and scientifically speaking he would be labeled a fraud

Tesla had the idea of creating a system of wireless electricity distribution.

Technically speaking Nikola Tesla could have invented the Internet

He wasn't born an old fat man, you know.

Anyway, I never expected that my favourite show this season will be the one made straight up for kids.
>>
>>144593777
The man proposed to a 15 year old and later had kids with her. Later he wrote this tho:

"in all your Amours you should prefer old Women to young ones," to wit:

"1. Because they have more Knowledge of the World …

"2. Because when Women cease to be handsome they study to be good … there is hardly such a Thing to be found as an Old Woman who is not a good Woman.

"3. Because there is no Hazard of Children, which irregularly produc'd may be attended with much Inconvenience.

"4. Because through more Experience they are more prudent and discreet in conducting an Intrigue to prevent Suspicion.

"5. Because in every Animal that walks upright the Deficiency of the Fluids that fill the Muscles appears first in the highest Part. The Face first grows lank and wrinkled; then the Neck; then the Breast and Arms; the lower Parts continuing to the Last as plump as ever; so that covering all above with a Basket [!], and regarding only what is below the Girdle, it is impossible of two Women to tell an old one from a young one. And as in the Dark all Cats are grey, the Pleasure of Corporal Enjoyment with an old Woman is at least equal, and frequently superior; every Knack being by Practice, capable of Improvement.

"6. Because the Sin is less. The debauching a Virgin may be her Ruin …

"7. Because the Compunction is less. The having made a young Girl miserable may give you frequent bitter Reflection; none of which can attend the making an old Woman happy.

"8th and Lastly. They are so grateful!!"

Fun fact: common thought at the time of the Revolutionary War was that the Americas, the actual continents, were younger and more primordial than the rest of the world. Thus why it was still so heavily forested and the local populations were so low. Everything there, the plants, the animals, the people, the dirt, was thought to be somehow fundamentally less developed at every level.

The Colonies' foreign policy partially consisted of trying to argue this was not true. And especially that the colonists weren't regressing into savages just by living on this wild new land and could be treated as just as capable of self governance as the Europeans.
