Asuka was reared as a small child to become an EVA-pilot, and never ever considered that she'd have some sort of other future than the one planned for her by NERV.

Practically the consequences of this is best shown in Evangelion's late-game.

When Rei loses her EVA and cannot pilot any more, she is virtually unaffected and instead turns the focus on antagonizing NERV and understanding her situation better.

When Asuka is unable to pilot because NERV has rejected her, she loses all will to live and becomes catatonic to the point you'd think she was comatose.

We can see here that Asuka is and always was, a puppet being controlled by NERV. Like a puppet, she collapses into a lifeless abhuman once the strings to her puppet masters, the EVA, is cut.
Rei on the other hand, proves Asuka wrong by not only retaining the integrity of her personality, but also strengthening it.

There is a reason for why Asuka is the one with dolls in her background, and Rei is free of it.

That's a good point, but we all know why Asuka called Rei a puppet (her lifeless persona) and the kind of person she is. That's why Evangelion is such a good show. Asuka is just a regular bitch who got dragged into a crazy world at a young age without her consent, and being the kind of person she is (stubborn, insecure, yet extroverted) simply accepted it. Her wish deep down, unlike Rei, is not as deep or existential, it's most likely some regular shit like "I wish I could've lived an ordinary life." She did more for NERV than you might think, she rationalized the entire crazy process to quell her own insecurities. Regular girl insecurities. "I'm doing something crazy, goofy and pointless that doesn't make sense. I look stupid." She's regular as fuck, but smart, she's the most realistic character.

When I say regular I don't mean she lacks character, I mean she's not the typical unrealistic anime weirdo, like Rei. Or an awkward introverted outcast like Shinji.

She's a pretty good character, without her I wouldn't take Evangelion as seriously.

Rei did have a personality though, until she was killed. Rei II didn't have a personality but grew as a character after meeting shinji.

Asuka watcher her lifeless mother's body hanging. I'd say after that any child would be fucked for life but she managed to become a pretty awesome person. She had already graduated college by the time she went to Japan to live with Misato.

Glad I found this thread, maybe I can find an answer.

Does anyone know the song playing during this scene? The whole building the sand pyramid and stuff. It's nowhere on the soundtracks I have and it's been bugging me since I especially love tracks like that, sort of dissonant and kind of creepy.

Anyone know the answer?
