I'm really bad at justifying my tastes, tbqhwyf.
I liked the art style, I loved the music, I loved the main couple and thought they had great interactions (this counts a lot to me).
The story was decent, the characters overall were good and not unduly retarded (very common flaw in the medium), I liked the pace of the storytelling.
I don't know what else to say, my likes are gut feelings and I'm not qualified to criticize any work.

I'm another guy who absolutely loves Katanagari. Music and visuals is fantastic, doubt even you would argue that. Story wise it has an incredibly strong lead with a meaningful character development, add in depth both overall thematically in just the layers of meaning in events like the tmple fight episode.

Thus me saying I liked it. It is good. For all the praise it gets you'd think it's some sort of exquisite masterpiece, though, which I really don't think it is.

If you really think about it the story isn't that strong. The characters aren't that interesting. Their interactions and motivations are all pretty weak overall, and even the premise itself starts running dry towards the second half with all the pointless swords.

I dunno, I think it's simply above average, which is good.

Visuals yes - superb. Music's allright. Nothing spectacular either imo. Personal taste I guess.

As to the story I disagree it nails everything it needs to. Is it competent? Sure, but I wouldn't use the words "nails it". MC was just along for the ride for the most part,fullfilling his duty and not much else. The romantic stuff comes pretty much at the end and has absolutely zero impact for me because I never liked her character and never found there to be much romantic chemistry between the two. On that note, HER whole motivation is also pretty weak, she's not really entertaining or interesting. All the villains are one-note with the possible exception of ojou-sama and even the story itself, meaning the swords and stuff wasn't even all that well executed. It was fine, not saying it was bad. Actually nothing about katanagatari is bad, just ultimately alright and actually kind of forgettable if not for such an unique visual style.

But hey, just my opinion.

I'm just extremely paranoid about the prospect of them putting a new theme in an attempt to "freshen up" and move on from P3 and 4 and ditching what in my opinion is the best theme to come out of the series and thus probably the best track in any videogame ever.
