No characters are people. If anything I'd say with their blandness the SSY-cast feels somewhat less contrived than average anime characters.

as usual, /a/ has shit taste when it actually comes to anime. shin sekai yori was great, admittedly had a couple of issues with the pacing, but a strong 8/10 neverthless.

One of the very few 10/10 anime.

Amazing atmosphere and worldbuilding as well as memorable characters, plot and soundtracks. Animation can be jarring at times, especially in that one episode, but it doesn't detract my enjoyment and the story.

Amazing world building and story. I also really like the post-apocalyptic far into the future feel where they discover little hints about the old world.

When I watched it I was pissed the whole time at how stupid everything was, but thinking back on it it was well done for a dystopia. It just didn't have a character rebelling like most do, so everyone continues to follow the retarded rules and ideas without noticing how retarded they are.

It shows a world where the people have been completely stripped of the ability to defend themselves and the harsh oversight necessary to maintain a society of people who will be certain not to abuse that. I still didn't enjoy watching it, and I remember even at the very end the characters were doing retarded shit after they should have learned their lessons, but I can understand why some people would like it.

What was the deal with the titty monster that came out of the people that just died?

8/10, one of the best anime in the past 5 years.

Love it despite its flaws. The idea of the world a thousand years in the future if people started developing tremendous psychic powers in this day and era was very intriguing right from the start. That and the soundtrack made for a very surreal experience. It didnt feel like it took place on earth. The whole journey to Tokyo near the end was amazing.

I didnt really care for any of the human characters other than Saki and Satoru, since they were the ones you get to know the most, but that alone was enough to make me invested in the conflict with the queerats

8/10. Original story, taboo themes, mature situations, soundtrack so good that "Wareta Ringo" probably inspired "Rather Be", good plot twist and creative art style but the animation sometimes were pretty bad.

Characters are not everything to everyone. After all horror and science fiction are popular genres, and both are defined for bland characters.

I personally care more about world building and themes than about characters, so I have no problem rating it 8/10.

This. I remember a time, not too many years ago, when "character driven" was a phrase not used that often in the anime community. It was kinda seen as a rarity if a narrative was carried and made great by how it developed its characters. Nowadays, it seems like everyone expects everything to be character driven and shits on anything that isn't. The characters in Shinsekai aren't given much depth or development because that isn't the focus of the show. The show primarily uses its characters as just vehicles to explore its world and create atmosphere, and it does a damn good job with that. The characters not being extremely fleshed out isn't a flaw with the show, as the show was never trying to be character driven. If you have a problem with that, it's a flaw with your own expectations, for going into every show expecting it to put its priorities on developing its characters.

This reminded me of Enders Game books. Mainly Speaker for the Dead and Xenocide. I picture the pequeninos looking like the molerats. The way the people of Path were modified with OCD reminds me of the Death Feedback they get too. I think there was a bunch more thematic similarities which I'm trying to remember.
