My mind kind of glazed over during that arc but if I remember right the school had a teacher step in to split the kids up and talk to them for counseling, and some of the girls in the group admitted they were just bullying because of the head bitch and they wind up befriending Hina. After everything goes down and they graduate Hina manages to past tests to get into the same high school as Rei. She makes a new bff and kind of gets over everything but Rei watches over her like a hawk because he's in love with her, which Akari and her Aunt aren't that thrilled about. This comes up a lot in the next arc with the sister's dad.

The baseball guy Hina liked left the area to go to a school that would give him a higher chance of getting into Japan's baseball league. The girl that left because of the bullying lives at a special farm for rehabilitation or some shit and she still has issues talking to girls her age, including when Hina visits to see her.

Yeah, I just felt like it kinda dragged on for too long. There were a bunch of chapters from Hina's perspective but I just prefer the series when it focuses on shogi and Rei's family issues. It's been a while since his sister and Goutou have showed up in the manga.

From what she's said in manga rambles and the fact that she used a teddy bear as a replacement for herself in an interview she might be hideous, but it could also just be that she's extremely shy. A lot of mangaka are like that.

The last volume of 3Gatsu had a couple pages where she talked about her hiatus and it sounded like she got a bit messed up in some kind of accident. She couldn't walk or eat solid food for a few days and her tailbone was broken.

Why were JC Staff and Production I.G. not capable of nailing the character designs like Shaft?

Because Umino specifically requested that Shinbo /Shaft direct the anime, or else an adaptation won't happen, so it's obvious she's exerting more influence than usual.
